Where can I get a large order of fiberglass insulation at a decent price? Buying one piece at a time at Home Depot seems to expensive to be worth it...
AMUSINGISTHEDAWN, the difference between normal house hold foam insulation and fibre glass is the density. Fibre glass is a higher density so will be able to with stand colder temperatures of water without condensating and colder outside temperatures without the pipe freezing.
If it is for freezing purposes I would use 15mm or 20mm think phenolic section insulation as it has twice the density of fibre glass.
@alexiskillsall, we certainly cannot make vids for everything so we encourage you to call us. 800-734-8771 and we can tell you the various ways these can be done.
@brichter55 maybe a good reply to this is; I started insulating on the USS Sierra AD-18, a destroyer repair ship. I enlisted during the Vietnam war and used many ACMs (Asbestos Contained Materials) no one cared if I was union then. if you have ever done any plumbing, carpentry, masonry, roofing or electrical around your house and did not hire a union guy to do it....... you are a scab too.
@MMAGillz , I aggree it is often times boring but if you are doing an industrial job 80 feet in the air as in a large boiler, percipitator, reactor, catylist tower in a refinery, including pipes and large valves,it can get pretty challenging. If you are doing anything colder than 0 (as in welding gases) it is very challenging. Maybe get off the plumbing lines and LP steam and get after the big stuff where challenge is rewarded with big pay scales too. Insulation works and has purpose
@amusingisthedawn, they have a similar initial R value but hardware brand "plastic foam" shrinks leaving gaps between pipe and insulation and is very difficult to bond pieces together. When gaps are created, you loose heat like insulating a room and leaving the doors and windows open. Nitrile foam rubber is bonded together with adhesive and will not leave gaps at joints and fittings and neither will fiberglas. Of 3 types of heat transfer convection causes most heat loss (heat loss thrugh air)
@shmiggen, you should see the pipe rack now ! we lent it to "The Today Show" and got it back with nearly ALL the pieces missing. Glad it was just for demonstration purposes.
Wow, I have been selling these products for over 30 years. prior to that, I was a union insulator, before that I was a non union insulator and before that, I ran the insulation shop on a destroyer repair ship during the Vietnam war. I have never had anyone complain about owens corning. We have roughly 3 minutes to create these videos so there is not much time to be perfect but you can take as much time as you want to make it as beutiful as you desire.
That was a butcher job and Owens Corning pipe covering is junk it is so inconsistent especially with the wall thicknesses it makes it harder to apply any type of jacket and have it look good go with knauf or manson way better products Owens Corning needs to hire better QC'S
u forgot to run your knife across the seam, if its not jacketed soon, it will open, especially in the 1/2x1 and small sizes as such, also why didnt you just make a stove pipe 90, and cut the heel off? it would save a bundle, especially if u have to order prefab 90's
staples are definitely a thing of the past but the seam must be rubbed very well. the new acrylic adhesive's bond (on the seams) actually gets stronger with age.
we have molded PVC for the fiberglass system that come with fiberglass pre-cut inserts. these are secured with matching tape and/or stainless serrated tacks. you can follow the instructions in the clips to make els for the elastomeric system or we can make them for you.
those slits are know as "The flying V" as it speeds up installation though not approved or recommended by all manufacturers for permeability reasons which mostly applies to chilled pipe systems or in food process areas.
the hat was free! Yes I am a hack and have been doing this since the early 60's when we used to sew the jacketing on with an osborne needle. we only have a couple minutes to do these videos and I did them on my first try. We have solved insulation issues for all branches of the military, NASA, INTEL, and hundreds of schools, chemical companies, food plants, bio diesel, distilleries, etc. We have experts that work here that are not as hacky as me.

How does the fiberglass wrap compare to the typical foam wrap that most homeowners use?

could you reccommend some websites where i can learn more about insulating like patterns for midors gores and hognoses
0blazers0 8 months ago
@0blazers0 I guess you should call for details because there are many different insulations and these patterns can vary.

we cover out pipes slightly differantly tho
we cut 90 degree slits in the length then put it on
