At the game's end, Howatt and Lane, like a scene out of Slapshot, are seen jumping onto the ice in their street clothes to join in the celebration.

Both guys were 2 of my favorite players of all time- & few people know that Gillies had six 30 plus goal seasons in his career, and that O'Reilly led the Bruins in scoring one year with 90 pts! I just don't like homer fans that make excuses for their guy. Gillies won 3 of their 5 fights, but lost the 2 he was beaten in decisively!
Both guys respected each other, & Gillies patted O'Reilly on the back after the series handshake!

2 of the best, no doubt. 2 hockey players that had balls of steal and also had the tallent to win hockey games. I think hockey players of today should look at O'Reily and Gillies and truely learn something about toughness and respect. This particular series exemplified the true toughness of hockey. Fortunately, after all was said and done, the good guys were smiling at the handshake.

I agree with your assessment of the O'Reilly-Gillies scraps, but don't lose sight of the fact that Gillies jumped O'Reilly in the third fight. Gillies dropped his gloves and was pummeling him while O'Reilly was still on his knees with his gloves on.
Terry O'Reilly was definitely one of the all time tough guys and a great fighter as well, though he was never quite as good with his dukes after rotator cuff surgery following the '79-'80 season.

I noted a post on another Islanders-Bruins fight clip regarding the Bruins comentators f...n up the Islanders' players names. "Langman," and "Larma" for Langevin and Lorimer for example. The poster suggested they were on the juice. The comentators also keeps saying "flailing away" and "rattled him" all the time as if those are the only adjectives in the hockey lexicon. Just another thing obnoxious about the bruins. Their comentators, who are on the juice, with limited vocabulary.

I don't want to take everything away from O'Reilly he does fight well but two or three things stand out: 1) He seems to slap (it seems that way, not a flush fist shot) alot; 2) he tends to go for the jersey move instead of trading after a while; and 3)he fights by ducking sideways as he left hooks the guy over and over...

Terry O'Reilly may have cost the Bruins this game, but not because of his fighting. In the overtime he tried to clear the puck which went right to the Islanders' Bob Bourne. Bourne blew a massive slapshot by the legendary Gerry Cheevers only 84 seconds into the overtime to end the game, allowing the Islanders to sweep both games at Boston Garden.

Oh, and they only sucked in 72-73 and 73-74. In 74-75 they went to game 7 of the 3rd round (now called the conf. finals) after being only the second team ever to come back from down 3-0 to win a series the series before. Boston fans should know about that stat as well as anyone.

Based on the Islanders history the last 23 years you should have the sense to be quiet. The Bruins have had a tough time against Montreal-who hasn't? Habs had great teams in the 70's for example. Habs have one a Cup in every decade since the 1910's--look it up!
