An argument i've seen is that Tylor is enlightened, being stupid or smart doesn't matter because he's following a path to improve the lives of the crew and help them reach enlightenment (and through the series the various characters grow and become better people because of him or his stupid actions, solving the problems himself wouldn't help them). This even makes the intro make some kind of sense (leading the crew up the path of light for instance).
@rhubis Although this is only speculation and not actually mentioned in the series i like this theory. Watching the series a second time with this in mind just makes everything better somehow, it makes Tylors supreme luck make sense as well as the main drive of the plot. Its all about the character growth. But of course since its not mentioned then it just makes it a nice theory.
Pfft dont listen to this fool, Tylor is not stupid. He is in fact incredibly smart and just acts like a fool. Towards the end of the series you will realize this, if u have atleast 2 inches of forhead that is.
@omarct Any moron that tells his crew to do whatever the hell they want and then intentionally surrenders to an enemy ship without so much as an ounce of resistance IS a MORON. I'm sure the fact he handed those two terrorists their guns back after Yuriko disarmed them at Hanner's home was just another brilliant tactic right?
@BionicSlime That's just the way he is. Besides if he had tried to resist they would had most likely died. He always finds a way out, by not resisting and just going with it until there is an opportunity to strike. Another example is that fight where he keeps running away and ends up destroying the entire fleet, had he stayed and fight with "valor" they would had all died.
@omarct Except the basis for what he did was not intentional but accidental, dumb luck, not genuine sincerity. He truthfully did not know that present was a bomb nor did he care when the crew went nuts after he told them to act freely. He didn't do it to find a way out, he did it because he feels like it. Saying "that's just the way he is" doesn't make his actions any less moronic, saying "that's the way they are" with beavis and Butt-head doesn't make their actions any less idiotic for example.
@BionicSlime What other choices did he have? You are acting like he had a million options and chose the dumbest one, he didnt, he chose the safest option, which was surrendering. Whether he knew that the gift was something bad or not can be debated. Well w/e this anime is open this way so that there are people who think he is a complete retard that wins by accident, or a smart guy that just doesnt give a fuck and is just going with his instincts.
@omarct Watch Trigun and then watch this show and tell me there is a debate on whether or not he knew it. Vash purposely acts like a fool and hides what he can really do. Tylor has rarely done anything to make us think he is anything but a fool, it's not a matter of a million other options its a matter of actually TRYING, which is something he has never done throughout majority of the show. The show always mentions luck with him, not skill, not hidden talent, luck. Tylor joined the army based
@omarct on an ad with a cute girl in it, didn't think he would DIE in a WAR, he didn't know a room was on fire while he was IN IT, and worst of all, he was actually shocked when he got a court Martial for releasing the empress....what did you THINK would happen? I know why he released her but to honestly believe that nothing bad would happen to him by doing that is retarded in and of itself. We don't know fighting them would have been useless, he didn't bother to try anything else to find out.
@BionicSlime - It's very debatable in either direction. In episodes where he's either trying to be serious or controlled into being more serious, he is extremely perceptive and inspiriational. That trip to his mind also shows he is at least aware he comes off as an idiot.
That being said, some of his actions also don't agree with being a genius. Some actions would require omniscience to pull off. And some of them make no damn sense at all.
@stuckinsj I meant it kinda felt like it, I saw Bebop and Trigun before I saw this show even though Tylor was made before them. It was just something my mind associated when I thought of it.
5:35 - Bigger note here is that it was Freeman's first major role. He had no set style in voice acting yet. When Slayers came around after a delay and gave him Zel (since they lost most VAs after time off between EP 13-14), he began getting more typecasted.
I have to admit, after watching both this and Martian Successor Nadesico (unsure if you've seen it. It's not on your review list), I see many parallels, where Nadesico leans to some Evangelion moments and Tyler is more straight comedy.
@kirant I actually not only have seen Nadesico but I personally own it and love it as an anime series (though the movie was a bit harder to enjoy for obvious reasons if you've seen it). Tylor does feel like a parody of many anime and have several elements from other series, mostly it reminds me of EVA (like you said) and Nadia: Secret of blue water. Though personally I found Nadesico to be the better series when compared to Tylor.
I really like this show myself but i can also relate to waht you say, the frist couple episodes after he is on the ship makes me want beat the hell out of Tylor for being kind of a dick and wimp in all the things he does but after those it became alot easier to like after those cause then he atleast seems to know what his doing even if it by accident
@TheRealBologna Funny you say that because her old voice actor (Rachel Lillith who also used to voice Jesse btw) plays one of the main characters in this show.
thank you for reviewing it and just as it was starting it's youtube legal put of for now. I will say though while it is retarded to some extent every good tactical genius needs a little dumb luck, and he has a natural gift for it so that his gut feelings seem to work for him on these.

How is this a parody of Trigun and/or Cowboy Bebop when it was made 4-5 years before either of those were released?
