drunk3director YOU NEEDS TO BE LOCKED IN A VALUT FOREVER. SOME PHILOSOPHIZE TOO MUCH. LET THE RECORD OWN VERSION. MAYBE BETTER ACT AND SONG. PROBABLY SHAKESPEARIAN STYLE ......
Honestly, if no one here gets this or ANY of the covers in the movie, they're either too young (the film came out in 1978) or they simply hasn't seen it. Granted, you MAY have to tie yourself to a chair the first two times you watch it, but I guarantee it'll settle in your brain for the rest of your life. And MOST of the covers aren't bad, especially "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", Earth, Wind and Fire's cover of "Got to Get You Into My Life" and Aerosmith's version of "Come Together".
@Koventry - Well said. If I may, I'd like to add to your point. There are also people who "got" the performances in this film that never previously "got" them when originally performed by the Beatles. My wife, for instance, never paid much attention to the song "Get Back" when sung by the Beatles, but REALLY enjoyed the inherent pop-poetry of the lyrics when sung by Billy Preston.
@Koventry I think the problem is that too many people are trying to "get something" from this when there is nothing to get. It's simply a trippy slop fest of retardation, and that makes it great.
my dad met steve martin and got to have dinner with him.....bc my dad is the sound engineer for a bluegrass band, and steve martin was playing the banjo for a band that was playing at the same place
Im not saying this was bad (actually it was good) but it would have been better with the original tempo of the song and his real voice... but still, his part was great.
This song is awesome as is! Steve is genius! its obvious that the choice to have Steve Martin do this song the creators were going for a satire version, not everything has to be portrayed as "Otherside of the Universe Emo".
Yeah, this is one of my guilty pleasures movies. I love watching it even though the Beatles had nothing to do with it. But it did introduce me to many Beatles songs when I was little. The movie came out when I was 1 but I got to see it when I was 7 and was truly entertained.
While this isn't my favorite Steve Martin musical role (DENTIST), I think he did pretty good. One of my favorite versions of Maxwell's Silver Hammer :)
I saw this in theater with my parents when I was about 6/7 yrs old and made them sit through the movie twice so I could watch this part again. I thought this was the funniest thing I'd ever heard/seen at that age. My parents were amazingly patient, considering how the rest of this film sucked. I still like this part, though. Martin was great back then......
@FionaDaAwesomest - That's easy. If you don't recognize the song, look at the title. If that doesn't tell you what this is, read the description below the video. If you are still uncertain as to what this is, based on those easy-to-find answers, you might consider reading the entirety of the posted comment thread below the video. If after all of that, you STILL don't know what this is, you probably shouldn't be on the internet asking silly questions anyway.
@NorthRoberts im sorry i was missunderstood. let me refrase myself, WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH HIS VOICE?! its like he has a lisp or maybe his tounge was malled by a bear, i dont know but something terrible is happening when he sings!
@FionaDaAwesomest - Allow me to explain. If you aren't familiar with Steve Martin's early stand-up career, his performance as Maxwell Edison is directly evocative to such performances... combining Martins satirical impersonation of the typical comedian of the time with a tacky lounge singer. This was the Steve that people knew at the time. You can hear a similar performances in his song "King Tut." And I'm sorry about the previous jerky response. I've just gotten used to gunning down trolls.
its really not that good of a version but its funny and he isnt supposed to sound amazing, hes just supposed to sing and hes a comedian making things funny is his job. :D
Lol I remember that movie. I actually really liked it! I guess you had to be into that genre of rock-opera/musicals to really get a kick out of it, though. That and Tommy. XD It was funny to see Steve Martin in that role, and then to go onto his (nearly identical) role in Little Shop.
@amgproducoes - True. But this is from the motion picture titled "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band." The film included songs from various Beatles albums.
wanna see how much life you realy wasted go to blame societys films (or) blamesociety2 and look up WASTED LIFE its kinda funny. (not being mean or anything its just funny)

@drunk3director- you should look it up sometime or there is Help!-but that has the actual Beatles in it(it is an older film)

I'm not a kid. I was born before Help and Hard Day's Night came out. I know the Beatles very well. I think the Pepper movie is an embarrassment. Can we drop this?

Animation beats this video, honestly. Unnecessary voice acting.

what movie is this
killallthezombies 2 years ago
It's the movie "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."
It's a musical review of Beatles songs that came out about 30 years before "Across the Universe."
