  • still boots faster than vista... god i wish i had one of those old beauties.

  • I wish I still had mine. :(

  • my english teacher has one of these but he gutted it out and turned it into a fishtank... no idea why considering the value of these computers :\

  • My windows 7 box (with SSD) boots pretty quickly

  • Still have one of these! Complete with a 1MB Hard drive which it sits on top of

  • Amzing, however, a question not related to the video by any means, I jest realized there is a 500 char. limit on youtube, there goes spamming huge text pages in lenght;)

  • its like eats the floppy om nom nom nom nom nom

  • Can I format the floppy to use with MS-DOS?

  • nice computer :)

  • This thing is revolutionary in its time. The GUI and the clickable icons are waaaaaaaaaaaaaay earlier than Bill Gates and his MS-DOS.

  • @nucleartactician yes, all computers from 1984-5, except PC, have GUI (Amiga, Atari, Mac...)

PC (l)user wait almost 8 years ('till 1992) for mainstream GUI OS only because Microsoft manage to crush DRI GEM gui OS from 1984 with DRI own, 7 years old, CP/M!! (aka M$ DOS)).

it same right now: PC users will wait for true tablet OS from Microsoft for years... or they can use iPad right now :)

...just like they could use GUI OS on Mac (or Amiga, or Atari) in 1984 ;)

  • @zarjesve2 Windows 1 was released in 1985.

  • @PrinssiFO yes, but there was no programs for early version of Windows and nobody use it. Until version 3.0 Windows was largely un-relevant.

  • @zarjesve2 * irrelevant. I dunno bout you but I fully agree,Windows is crap. still is.

  • @zarjesve2 Well, I used it for a school newspaper. There were programs like Paint and Write. The rest of the computers were UNIX.

  • @nucleartactician MS-DOS had games

  • @pikefan23 It's so funny how many people treated the Mac hardware and software as "toys," and they were "baby computers." But it's MS-DOS/Windows that had GAMES! I guess fans of the second camp were not fans of getting work done. Instead they wanted to play games on their PC's :)

  • Macintosh<3333

  • It had no eject button, which was good fun when confusing PC users.

  • My PC running Windows 7 boots faster than that? o.O

  • Ubuntu would run perfectly on that

  • Um... the rainbow apple mean Gay pride or some shit?

  • @GeekTechMac Not necessarily. This was Apple's old logo from the late 70s / early 80s to the late 90s

  • @jared116 for real? damn my bad

  • Faster then my windows 7

  • i got my mac plus out and did the steps at the same time as you and it went at exactly the same speed. it was pretty cool.

  • Waiting for startup disk

  • Well its still impressive and if you plug that cassete now in your windows machine and browse the files you can make your own system:D i have maked me own one. MacOShit

  • What is the value of one of these things today, computer, original disks, mouse, keyboard, dust covers?

  • Nice job apple! keep up the good work!

  • i love how on EVERY SINGLE video on Youtube that shows an old mac that usualy predates their births, some idoits ALWAYS have to have a mac vs PC argument.

  • Damn, I remember trying to buy one of these on eBay, but I always lost because my parents gave me a spending limit (It was $30 and I was 13 back then). I ended up getting a Mac SE for $3 and it was money well spent!

  • @pwnage666 LOL you wouldn't get a Mac plus for $30, i''ve seen pretty tatty ones sell for double that :P

  • @macnerd93 You're sure about that? I've got a Mac Plus coming to me for $25 complete with keyboard, mouse, and software, and it works, too.

  • @macnerd93 lol, yeah that was back in 2004. I would be pretty lucky to find one at that price again. I remember bidding for another one for about $29, but everyone was sniping at the last minute and it ended up selling for $95. But oh well... Oh and with that SE, I got an LCII for $10 :D

  • Almost 30 years later, still boots faster than Windows-7, Impressive

  • @Giardintek

Naah.. My comp boots in under 10 secs, and I'm using W7..

  • @Giardintek yeah, but at that time there was like nothing to load :D

  • @Giardintek because the os size 1 mb !

  • @aziliks @TehAndrewRyan think of the PC however. These days we have Quad-core multi-Ghz processors with like DDR3 DIMM ram. This had an 8mhz processor with 1MB SIMM ram lol.

  • @Giardintek What a stupid comparison, Windows does a lot more than that Macintosh....

  • I don't remember that. I wasn't even born... But seriously, it's amazing. The first PC I had was some old stuff with a processor of 10 mhz ( 11 when you press "turbo", nice overclocking, heh, 10% ^^ ) And now, it's dead. It's amazing to see that this old mac from 1986 can boot 22 years later!

I'm wondering what my children will say when they'll see my "old" computer, with core i7, 2x Ati 5870 in crossfire, etc :p

  • I used to play some game on an old mac back in grade 1 or 2. I can't remember the name of it though. Something like mouse click or mouse hunt or something, anyways you were a scuba diver and you had to move the mouse around to control your flashlight and light up underwater creatures.

Anybody remember what it was called?

  • DO WANT

  • I am buying a Macintosh Plus with external hard drive, external disk drive & keyboard and mouse for $20! even comes the original printer!

  • @psivewri

    How?! I Must know.

  • @HunterNational well i just got it yesterday, it works fine and the external hard drive works as well, I got it from a locals scouts group that didnt want it anymore,

  • a prime example of prime apple quality

  • How heavy is that thing?

  • wooo! 80s technology ftw!

  • Absolute maintenance!

  • i remember when 100kb was like 160gb in that time :D

  • @W00CKEY I remember that. and when the "Power PC" Mac came out, it was a big deal.

  • @W00CKEY I remember when I bought my computer 4 years ago with a huge 320GB harddisk, and nowadays even the lowest end computer has more of everything :P

  • Comment removed

  • OMG how could something that old even still work??

  • Comment removed

  • @jellybean585

macs were built to last, even back then. :)

  • how epic would it be to run snow leopard on one of those things!? fukin crazy idea, but take an old mac plus that dont work, replace screen, and hardware, fukin crazy

  • @richardsonl91 It's been done a few times

  • This is cool!

  • I think i had my Apple sticker in the same place - or is this my computer you stole ??

  • @ktmbikerider What are those Apple stickers for? Are they for some type of licensing, how does that work? If you could answer this I would appreciate it.

  • @sketchyinc It was JUST an Apple sticker that came with the computer. We stuck ours exactly where this guy stick his......thats all. Maybe thats my old computer ....

  • @sketchyinc They're just stickers they included in the box, like the plain white ones you get with iPods now.

  • @sketchyinc They were just deco, like the apple logo nowadays. Just to show you it was a Mac.

  • that took a minute. my computer takes like 1 hour

  • I wonder if you can play Runescape on that! JK ;)

  • Brings back memories. It's hard to younger people to understand how ahead of its time the Mac Plus and System 6 were.

  • watching a youtube vid will probably crash that comp xD

  • that shit wouldnt even fit an mp3

  • can't you leave the floppy just in their? And can't you just drag it in before you start?

  • I always wanted one of these!!

  • Ah, the days when the OS fit on a floppy (though part of it (including QuickDraw, and some of the window management) was in ROM).

  • LOL. Risc OS is the fastest booting system.

  • REVERSE CORRECTION: my pc boots up in 15 seconds, from first start to PW. i have windows 7. suck a big fat mac dick :)

  • can you show evidence of this?

  • yes i can. let me fraps later

  • with all services and functions dissabled no doubt.

  • mine does it too.

  • yes, but can you show evidence of this. with a timer in the corner that is calibrated to a standard timer (not doctored in otherwords)?

  • i'll do it later.

  • i give you a week from now (long enough i think) to show evidence of your system booting in 15 seconds.

Also, please dont move all of your porn and stuff to another drive to decrese boot times.

  • further more, from start to PW (password i assume) dosent count as my vista is still pretty fast at getting to the screen, Its my desktop that takes ages.

Its either ALL or nothing (dont worry, the time you take to type your password in wont factor into this, and will be taken from the final times for the sake of fairness).

Let the trials begin. (lights turboflame lighter)

  • lol :D my windows 98 boot in 3 seconds. ^^

  • that was a week ago, and you havent shown evidence. Please see the updated conditions for showing evidence on a new post of mine (Start to PW-password dosent count as most systems are still pretty fast at this whether or not loads of porn and stuff is on the system).

Password entry wont be part of the final times for the sake of fairness.

  • Comment removed

  • lol then it does take longer. but i also need time to remove my pants before i open the porn so its ok ;)

  • ok i uploaded the video. its 48 seconds ;) but without the desktop load its 20 secs or something.

alright, how much did i bet? is paypal ok? xD

  • Um you have not shown proper evidence, if you read my conditions i said full boot start-desktop. Also where is the video?

  • my apology, the video probably hasnt been processed yet.

  • ok check out on this channel. its still processing i think but it should be done in a few minutes.

  • i know i cant upload it for some reason, it says error halfway. i will upload it on my other account, i'll hit you up asap.

also i did tape it from bios to desktop. just see the video

  • an 80s mac on todays hardware will have boot speeds so fast its on before you hit power :P

  • Well, a Commodore 64 shows and is "READY." the instant second you switch it on.

  • @konrad303 and then takes two decades to load a program.

  • @ThorMaxx Program loading has to be measured separately on the comparison system, too. We talk about boot time.

  • @konrad303 Oh I know... I just found it humerous (remembering back in the days playing on the c64 at a friends house... and how long we had to wait for the game to load)

  • faster then my moms Win 7 computer, it taks 3 mins and its fast hardware, and she has nothing installed except for anti virus and fire fox, and her mail,

  • but not faster than windows 7!!!! OH NOEZZ

  • CORRECTION... the boot-up here is 3x faster than that of a windows 7... avarage boot-up here is 30 secs average pc these days is 90 secs...

  • cool

  • boooooooooo you suck

  • hahahaha.... it's faster than my windows vista boot lol!

  • cool. looks like your screen is going good. that seems to be the primary problem with these old 68k all-in-one macs thesedays, they get weird vertical bars and the screens flicker and go dim and eventually won't work at all... i've had three go out that way. i have no idea how to fix them, so i think i am going to end up selling them for parts / repair on ebay.. ah well. maybe i'll find a good one someday.

  • That is probably a failed CRT, if you can find the model number a lot of companies sell reproductions for old TV's and computers.

  • if it is a bad CRT, it may be more trouble than it's worth to try and fix it, cause you got high voltages and stuff. Unless you really want a working compact mac...

  • One of these days I'll post a video of my Mac Plus booting System 6 off an external HD. It boots in less than 10 seconds.

  • Yeah, can you buy a floppy with the OS anywhere? I have the files, and the floppy, I just don't have the legacy Mac to write the files to disk, my family got rid of them a while ago.

  • Do you think you could send me the files?

I am getting a old G3 soon and I can put them on floppies. I might be able to send one to you to.

If so pm me and i'll give you my email.

    Thx

    RJ

  • Thanks, but I'm afraid that wouldn't work unless you have a floppy drive that will write double density floppies. It's really stupid but the USB floppy drives only take HD (High Density) disks, which means you need a mac from the mid 90's that can download the files from a HD floppy and copy them to a DD floppy. Thanks anyways.

  • I am getting a mac that can do that.

Do you think you could send me them?

    If not I understand.

    Thx

  • Are you willing to sell the floppy to me?

I really want mine to start up and I cant find a copy of the floppy anywhere.

    Thx

  • does anyone know where I can find the floppy disk for it?

  • You realize that without that computer, your Macbook Pro wouldn't exist, right? That is computing history, and you damn well respect it.

  • umm. nah. i dont respect this computer. i always got my dell xps

  • Guess what, without the Mac, Microsoft wouldn't have made Windows. They worked on the Mac before Windows was ever a twinkle in their eyes, and employed the knowledge they gained from the project when they made Windows. Just because you're young and take advantage of better technology, doesn't mean you should be ignorant of the tech that made it all possible.

  • haha. ya. whatever, the macbook pro still kicks this things ass

  • You do know that without geeks your computer wouldn't exist, right?

  • i think you meant to say without geeks i would be doing my homework because i beat the shit out of them if they dont do my homework

  • You ignorant asshole, the macbook pro is modern technology, this computer is decades old. Comparing the 2 is like comparing Modern warfare to the Revolutionary war. Both are important, but simply, incomparable. Instead of making uneducated comments on things you obviously are to naive to understand, go back to your stupid paintball gun and go have your little paint ball wars with your know-nothing friends.

  • Oh, and another thing, throw away your MB pro, because you obviously don't belong in the mac community

  • haha. wow i can just buy another one.

  • I usually don't take one side on this issue.. but this guy's got a point. Microsoft may not have had the CAPITAL to even think about making an OS (though I'm sure it would have happened eventually) without their work on the Mac. I mean, hey.. you get paid, right?

Gates is a great man, no matter which side you're on, though. I like his emphasis on spending for Aids RESEARCH instead of just handing out the money to corrupt governments.

  • The Mac already was a ripoff just as Windows was later. The real birthplace of the modern computer interface is Xerox. They just didn't mass-market it.

  • @mrivera1 ,you do realize without apple, pcs would still be beige

  • @Gold171 Gui would have come sooner or later anyways,

the Alto had a great GUI setup int he 1970s

Its the fact Steve Jobs figured it out and brought it to public first.

It would be a lot different if apple wasn't in the market, but Im sure we would have evolved from beige lol.

  • @atari26003 well yeah i guess your right

  • @mrivera1 If that is the case, then i would love to see that thing trashed form history. Otherwise it is a amazing engineering feat.

  • @mrivera1 Correct me if I am wrong, but without that computer, there most likely wouldn't be windows too, because that was the first consumer computer that had a GUI.

  • @weinerschnitzelboy

i doubt that if apple or the mac didnt exist there wouldn't be any GUI driven computers - that stuff was in the works for years

  • @umageddon na not really only Xerox had a proper working prototype of a G.U.I on the Alto computer and that was in the late 70s, Xerox would have scrapped it & they did, Steve Jobs got the concept in exchange for apple shares

  • @umageddon They didn't make it.

  • we had one of them at school back in the day

  • i dont like the mouse

  • Old School computers were the best. EVER.

  • Where can i get one of those mac boot discs for my mac performa 5200

  • @s8erboii3122

You can find it at the Apple Support site though You'll have to dig around a little. You'll need a Mac with a floppy drive to download and make the disc. Also the 5200 is capable of booting off a CD so try finding a used copy of OS 7.5 or 8 online. There are many ways to get an OS of the old Bongo.

  • I have two of those!

  • Wow, it recognized the disk so fast!

    Wonderful machine.

  • OK, now hook it up to a modern piece of equipment like an epson large format printer or a milling machine. Load CAD or Photoshop (latest versions) and get to work.

  • awesome, those were the days

  • Have you tried creating a Hackintosh, I saw a website where you can stick a Mac Mini into one of these and boot it up with Leopard, very Awesome!

  • that sounds very awesome

  • There is also that for PC, Windows, and MS-DOS, boots in less than 5 seconds on 2GHz :D

  • @TriUser0001 A "Hackintosh is a Netbook with a Hacked Leopard system installed on it.

  • every non-apple computer that runs mac osx (tiger, leopard and snow leopard) is a hackintosh

  • I always thought the minimalistic design was awesome.

  • holy shit we use to have these in my elementary school... and this was only back in like 1993/4/5 im talking. thats old FUCKING school LOL

  • haha i have one told my friends i got a mac book then sent an unboxing of it lol

  • I wish I had an Apple comuter... : (

  • lol you had to insert the operating system

  • You could either root from a floppy or if you were a lucky one, you could have up to a 4MB hard drive.

  • no, you could have 4mb of ram. It can take just about any sized HD that will plug into the external SCSI port, some people even boot them from a external Zip Drive. With an external HD and System 6, these things are surprisingly quick. Mine boots in 7 seconds with the horrible old Rodime20 HD.

  • Pretty cool. What FPS do you get in Crysis?

  • wow look how long this computer been alive and today you go and buy a compaq or hp laptop and it wont last you longer then a year

  • i have an Classic II

  • The Classic IIis the second most powerful of the B/W Compact Macs, the SE/30 being the strongest.. You can boost A Classic II up to 10 mb of Ram, and give it just about any Apple Stickered SCSI drive, or find the patched disk tools program and use any SCSI hd with the large 50 pin connection. I'm thinking about putting a 1gig hd in mine. These are pretty fun little machines to tinker with. You'll a long shaft T-15 screwdriver to open it.

  • We've come a long way, baby.

  • Very quiet, I remember the loud Amiga 500 floppy drive XD

  • Nothing like some history baby weeee

  • I have this on emulator its really fun :D

  • And look at that... in the 80's Macs had automatic eject 3.5" floppy drives! I don't think a PC had an auto eject flpppy drive back then!

  • Does anyone have any idea where I can find a Macintosh 512k boot-up floppy disk? Ive tried ebay and craigslist to no avail. Does anyone here have one I could buy?

  • for what... just get a new mac

  • BOO

  • For fun, of course! Who says you can't have a new computer and collect old computers?

  • that is a completely ignorant statement. This video was probably made because it is interesting that something from 20 years ago will still boot. I am sure he has a new computer if he is posting this on youtube. And they aren't cheap, the went for $2500 back in the day :P

  • IT'S EVEN FASTER THAN VISTA !!! LOL
