Its not accurate. The commander saw japanese flags everywhere and surrendered cause he thought the Japanese had won the fight. It's sad because the japanese were losing and they carry the flags on their weapons. A sad and costly mistake.
Rousing version of an impossible defence against overwhelming odds, good movie. Even so, took the japanese 2 amphibious attacks weeks apart to succeed.
like it mattered...let freedom ring so Republicans have a free market to outsource and kill the middle class merchant with chinese shit..save the world and make it a better place
Actually complex you are wrong about one thing. Cmdr Cunningham did not assist in anyway the day (12/11/41) the Marines best back the first Jap landing attempt. He did not issue any orders to Maj Devereux and in fact called him a couple times to ask when he was going to open fire.
Cmdr. Cunningham, USN, was Officer In Charge of all naval and Marine forces on Wake.. He was a Naval Aviator, served on battleships, and cruisers and understood the placement and operation of 5-inch guns. He was hands on literally calling the shots to open fire on approaching Japanese warships.
The damage the defenders of Wake Island inflicted on the Japanese is unparalleled in American naval history. A naval relief task force was 620 miles from Wake when it turned back.
In total the Marines at Wake sank the Kamakazi class destroyer IJN Hayate and the Mutsuki class destroyer IJN Kisaragi (The first two major Japanese Warships sunk in the war), two patrol boats, downed 21 aircraft, and killed 820 Imperial Marines, and damaged the cruiser Yubari, the flagship of the invasion fleet
There was a relief force sent, but it turned back. The poor S.O.B.'s that survived the Jap takeover had it as bad as any POW taken in the Philippines.
There may have been a sailor boy in charge, but the Marine C.O. was the man responsible for defending the Island , and Marines were the primary defenders.
the bring us more japs message was a mistake. And anyone who knows about the siege knows it was the marine commander who saved the day till they surrendered
What do you mean left them there? There was no way to relieve wake island considering the Japanese Fleet at the time. The japs murdered 98 POW's in 1943 after the Island was bombed in fear of a Invasion. The Jap Commander after the war was indicted and executed for his crimes.
We did not have a fleet at wake island. then only fleets available at the time were at Pearl, Manilla bay, Suba Bay, and the West Coast of the states. The japanese knew they were POW's because they captured them!!!! We did not know of POW's on the island. We thought they were taken to mainland Japan or killed.

Great Movie. You can rent it on Netflix if anyone was wondering.
Winfield Cunningham should get more credit. He was the commander at wake.
