im a black male.i don't understand back in the day . if the whites hate us so much why do they sing our song.think god now a days you can suee if somebody try to steel your songs..you know they may have been to white men that wrote the song.but dionne got it first.now it has her imprint on it.only she can sing the song like that.nobody else can.
@jerseytoman1212 I don´t know if I got this right: This Song was written by two white men. But it was recorded first by a black woman and thus should not be recorded by whites further on? This is, with all respect, a very strange argumentation.
Btw: Imo this song is best sung by Aretha Franklin
Wow I/m surprised any one white got to sing this tune, before 1980. I have no problem with anyone else trying their hand at it. But Tanya looks like she's more concerned about her appearance, than anything else. It could have been sung better. I'd have loved Marlyn McCoo taking a crack at it. But I think Dioone and Aretha were the only big names, allowed to sing it for decades. McCoo could have knocked their socks off.
@youtub3k, I can't imagine anyone knocking Aretha's "socks off". Listen to her rendition on youtube. Tanya's sweet rendition would play best in a laundry detergent commercial.
He saidu' it was made popular by Dion Warwicku' you putzisu'. And Tanya has a very cool sounding voice for the Lawrence Welk show. Believe me these people on this show probably were happy to get away from the dives and drudgery of night clubs etc. People act like they were so pure. Live hard for a while and you'll want to be pure again too. We don't always know the full story. Well, these days we do. That's pert of the reason I hate these days.

*sigh* ...boring sound...typical Wonder bread 60's & the Lawrence Welk Show lol...hey, here's an idea: have Dionne sing her own song on the show?...duh.
@xlollipoopx oops im sorry...it is dionne's song..im sorry. it was writtnen by hal david and bacharach..and it was for dionne. im sory :) it's a verry verry good song.
This is trash. This is what they use to do back in the 60s, steal black people songs and put a white person there. If you watch the movie on Little Richard, they tried to do him like that and he blow that white man out the water.
For the record, 'I say a little prayer' was written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David -- two WHITE MEN!
Thus, the idea that a white artist singing this song is "stealing black" music is actually ignorant. If it was not for the brilliance of WHITE SONGWRITERS then NO-ONE would be singing it!
I wish ppl could just enjoy the music for what it is. This is a pretty song performed well. I hope the racist who have commented now know the facts. Regards.
this is white trash at it's best..sounds like a 50's commercial...Dionne and Aretha are the only ones that can make you feel soul......Glad the original Movie "Hairspray" confronted the issue... white washing soul and R&B music...go tracey Turnblad !!!!
Well this is an interesting contrast to Dionne and Aretha's versions. I watched Lawrence Welk as a kid and I actually met some of his band and singers on Cape Cod in the 1970s. It is a very white washed version but this lady is a talented singer. The version hasn't got the soul of Aretha and Dionne.
I like Lawrence Welk's take on the song. The music makes me smile. :) I'm a fan of the show and this just shows you how popular and appealing the Burt Bacharach sound was and still is. Tanya seemed to be really enjoying herself. I'm also glad that after her performance, Lawrence Welk gave nods to my girl, Dionne Warwick!
Tanya Falan Welk, she was married to Lawrence Welk's son. Welk wouldn't have allowed her to sing it with any soul even if she wanted to. Every single song on that show came out homogenized. Lynn Andersen eventually escaped to "Rose Garden."
@SNAKEEYESSAM I don't get it; I am a number 1 fan of ms. Warwick but I don't get the comparison. Back in the 70's we had lots of "variety shows" where people sang different versions of hit songs for entertainment. This is been taken too far about stealing from black folks etc. good grief. Black music, white music break down the door this is 1984 this was a song from that year now this is 2011 and the same racist talk, for the name of God. I enjoyed this song by this artist.
here's a song written by a white man but for god knows what reason, he wrote it for a colored woman, so we at the lawrence welk show decided to white it up for you, our only black cast member dances, as they should.
sorry but this version lacks all the soul genius that burt writes into most of his songs. this version is stiff and sad.
Yeah, it's the all-too-common whitewashing of a great song. It happened all the frigging time in the 50s/60s, few got to see the awesome black singers that originally had a hit :{
You make a good point, for example Georgia Gibbs stealing all of Lavern Baker's hits (great story about Baker buying life insurance at the airport and sending it to Gibbs because "If I die, your career is over"). But I don't think it applies here--by the time a song trickled down to the Welk audience, it was already a hit and Aretha and Dionne Warwick's versions certainly got a lot more airplay than Tanya. Anybody who preferred Tanya wouldn't touch Aretha or Dionne anyway.
Sheesh. Is there a song Welk doesn't ruin? He must dictate how his singers perform them. so he doesn't have to pay full royalties or something. His show rare gives any song more than two minutes. Often only a minute and 30. The elderly love this show, for its fruit salad mix of tunes.
yes i am acordding almost everyone, there is something that have black ones in their voices that makes deep everything they sing...God bless Africa's sons!
lol this and the dionne/aretha versions define the difference between black and white music, shes just sounding pretty theres no soul or emotional connection
I know Tanya married a Welk son. Which one was it? Larry Jr? or a younger son?
