I saw Iggy in Cincinnati around '90. He would spit into the crowd every so often and the audience would return the favor simultaneously launching multiple spit balls his way. Maybe that had become custumary at his shows but it was a new one for me. It was a charming performance.
Iggy is the sh*t. He is the most awesome performer on stage, rivalling Bowie. IMO, the Sales brothers backing Iggy on his tour in the 70s inspired Bowie to form Tin Machine. Bowie tried to give royalties to Iggy where credit was due. Saw Iggy in April at the Wiltern in LA. He jumped right into where I was (mosh pit). I've seen both performers many times. He was good without Bowie, too, but he just needed help along the way. He graciously admits that.
I agree, he does rival Bowie, but it's hard to measure their music because their styles are so different (when they're left to themselves and not working together). The only thing you can really measure is the way they act on stage...
I'd say Lust for Life is at least on-par with Fun House and Raw Power. It's different, but not necessarily worse. I do agree that this is a pretty disappointing video though. Proof that the greatest rockstars are inherently assholes.
fact is: Iggy's best work was before Bowie and the fact about Bowie is his songs were only good when Mick Ronson helped him. (Ronson should have worked with Iggy in the late 70's)
Bowie was only good with Ronson? naive. he could've easily gone with another guitarist of the same punch and still brought the best out in him. the late 70's work with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, those are the real gems IMO. not trying to discredit Ronson, but Bowie basically wrote the bare bones of the songs and directed Ronson as to how the leads should be played. Carlos Alomar (his long-time rhythm guitarist) had more distinct contributions to the music than Ronson, imo.
OMG, this stuff is precious. He was so strung out back then, now he's all business. Bowie rescued his bony ass so many times in his career. They made such amazing music together. In a recent interview Iggy said that Bowie wrote Lust For Life on a ukelele, what a scream. Bowie and Iggy are true original icons, bless their aging hearts. Music will be a sad, pathetic,and miserable landscape without them. I wish they would settle their falling out before they die.
In fairness to Ig, he onced tried this routine on a gang of bikers in the crowd, jumped into the audience, went straight up to one of them and got his lights punched out. Game over. That was pretty near to the end of The Stooges I think.

Was at that show, Sheridan College in 81, was with the sound crew "P.A.Plus" was the sound and stage company, LOL.

The rock stars will spit in a guy's face if he's averge built, but I don't give a fuck are you are: I'm 6'2, 200 lbs., so Iggy Pop better be ready to account for his actions. Very natural reaction I have to someone spitting in my face: I punish him.

I saw Iggy in Cincinnati around '90. He would spit into the crowd every so often and the audience would return the favor simultaneously launching multiple spit balls his way. Maybe that had become custumary at his shows but it was a new one for me. It was a charming performance.

Iggy is the sh*t. He is the most awesome performer on stage, rivalling Bowie. IMO, the Sales brothers backing Iggy on his tour in the 70s inspired Bowie to form Tin Machine. Bowie tried to give royalties to Iggy where credit was due. Saw Iggy in April at the Wiltern in LA. He jumped right into where I was (mosh pit). I've seen both performers many times. He was good without Bowie, too, but he just needed help along the way. He graciously admits that.

I agree, he does rival Bowie, but it's hard to measure their music because their styles are so different (when they're left to themselves and not working together). The only thing you can really measure is the way they act on stage...

I'd say Lust for Life is at least on-par with Fun House and Raw Power. It's different, but not necessarily worse. I do agree that this is a pretty disappointing video though. Proof that the greatest rockstars are inherently assholes.

fact is: Iggy's best work was before Bowie and the fact about Bowie is his songs were only good when Mick Ronson helped him. (Ronson should have worked with Iggy in the late 70's)

Bowie was only good with Ronson? naive. he could've easily gone with another guitarist of the same punch and still brought the best out in him. the late 70's work with Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew, those are the real gems IMO. not trying to discredit Ronson, but Bowie basically wrote the bare bones of the songs and directed Ronson as to how the leads should be played. Carlos Alomar (his long-time rhythm guitarist) had more distinct contributions to the music than Ronson, imo.

OMG, this stuff is precious. He was so strung out back then, now he's all business. Bowie rescued his bony ass so many times in his career. They made such amazing music together. In a recent interview Iggy said that Bowie wrote Lust For Life on a ukelele, what a scream. Bowie and Iggy are true original icons, bless their aging hearts. Music will be a sad, pathetic,and miserable landscape without them. I wish they would settle their falling out before they die.
