I just heard that the drummer in this video, Charles Honeyboy Otis, died last August. I played with him in a band in the 90's (Lisa Best Blues Band). He was a really nice person as well as a brilliant musician. Played on many great recordings from the late 50's on. He is definitely missed.
I had the honor and pleasure of opening for Carey as well as spending an afternoon together in 1997. He was a gracious and humble man. Carey had beautiful tone live-the upper registers had a flute like quality and the lower registers growled-this owing in large part to the way his rig was set up. A good man gone-I will miss him.
Blues is certainly a black invention, but blues wouldn't have existed without white people. Blues is based in basic European music theory. I - IV - V. I don't know of any African tribes that where jamming with triadic harmony. The fact is that it took both white people and black people to bring us this great form of art. Now shut the fuck up.
@MostlyInhuman humanity was born in africa ancient guitar early pianos(called marimbas) came from africa europeans are only creative to make weapons and slavery and bring pain to the rest of the world we dont need no i -iv -v dat was added to the bues to make it easier but blues came from the soul of brothas and sistas take ur europen crap and go listen mozart whe dont need it you need us
blues may have once been "black" music but from it has sprung most western popular branches of music. it is now a universal language spoken by a lot of people from many corners of the world. come top clarksdale mississippi and helena arkansas and touch the roots. you may get an epiphany.
disrespectul mf how can a brother copy a honky? blues is black blues is black music for black people and butterfield is a white guy playin blues when you play blues guitar blues harp you are imitating black people not the opposite
@casu3 SRV is white and is arguably the greatest blues guitarist ever. But you would never hear him make that claim, he was always very appreciative of the blues men before him, they created the blues, he made it more popular to white people. Trust me white people can feel the blues, not just imitate black people. Don't hate, appreciate!
how can a black musician can copy a white dude black is real white is shit in any case the BLUES IS BLACK MUSIC FOR BLACK PEOPLE NOT FOR WHITE IMPOSTORS PAUL BUTTERFIELD is a white guy PLAYIN BLUES HARP AGAIN BLUESSSSSSSS MEANS BLACK SO WHOS COPYING WHO
So you're telling me that Stevie Ray Vaughan, John Campbell, Eric Clapton and many other GREAT blues musicians were impostors because they weren't black? Yes, the Blues style music did originate from African-American communities. But it was the influence of the blues that made ALL blues musicians great. Not the color of their skin.
you cannot compare the likes of big walter, carey or junior they are all flat out great that also goes for kim portnoy butter cotton branch and I can go on and on.
Yes i read that Carey Bell played Bass Guitar behind LW and Bw !!! so he might have learned whole lotta Harp from the two giants!!!! his Son is a great guitarist also !!!
who do you think was first ,Paul Butterfield or Carey Bell, if its a copy then from the original Little Walter tune, Paul Butterfield learned from Little Walter and Walter Horton, they all played this song

I love Paul Butterfield's music as much as anyone. But the idea that Carey Bell was copying from Paul Butterfield is a reach.
