I personally follow both IndyCar and NASCAR...I've been a NASCAR fan longer, but I enjoy watching races of each. They both have pretty good finishes (although, in 2011, Indy has not nearly had the finishes NASCAR had).
@nathankrug A comparison for you....2 stock cars, side by side at 180 mph, "Ohhhh, they touch!" A scuffed up paint job. 2 indy cars, side by side at 225 mph, "Ohhhh, they touch!" Race car goes flying through the air, maybe killing the driver...point made.
@nathankrug Ahhh...another selective reader. Okay, here goes. You claimed open wheel racing was boring, I responded with the statement that the possibility of a major wreck was much higher than that of a stock car during side by side racing. The fact that stock car drivers can get away with beating and banging off eachother leads me to beleive that you are the fan of demo derbies. I don't wanna see my prefered race car drivers touch at all, AKA flying cars, death...
@irlcobrafan Yeah, not gonna say I bawled my eyes out, but, definately had to wipe a tear away. Watched that broadcast for the whole afternoon, waiting for news, and then...
Horrible job by the commentators...motorsports are unpredictible, and for them to proclaim Marco Andretti the winner with a full lap to go with a much faster Sam Hornish closing is busch league.
I can't stand Sam Hornish. He's pretty arrogant for a guy driving less than 10 Nationwide races in 2011. Former Indy 500 winner, current choke artist.
@f1alex94 Dumbest comment ever!! J.R. crashed and took HIMSELF out of it, he didn't get passed at the Yard! Sure he was a rookie as well, but he somehow managed to hit the wall in turn 4 with so big of a lead that he almost finished 1st (and finished 2nd cuz he had such a lead...I mean hitting the wall in turn 4 and sliding along it to the line, and still finishing 2nd!! Come one! He could've put the clutch down in turn 4 and coasted to the line to win it...instead he hit the "marbles"......
@cap10moman Wheldon was much closer than that - re-watch some of the videos of the finish. If Hildebrand had braked in 4, Wheldon would have had a great chance to pass him with the head of steam he had.
@jwtravel 1st off, J.R. would have never "braked" in turn 4....he would have lifted. Brakes are irrelevant at Indy except for pits and avoiding crashes in front of you. I didn't have to watch the videos (since I was sitting dirrectly on the yard), but I did anyways and there is absolutely no way Wheldon would have won if J.R. wouldn't have crashed. Like I said, J.R. could've pushed the clutch down and coasted to victory...He nearly won it after sliding down the whole front against the wall.
@cap10moman Wheldon was much closer than that - re-watch some of the videos of the finish. If Hildebrand had braked in 4, Wheldon would have had a great chance to pass him with the head of steam he had.
This is from the ESPN International (Non-USA, English-speaking) broadcast.Gary Lee and Larry Rice are the commentators. Almost the same video feed as the ABC version, but a different director, and thus some different shots, particularly in the pits.
@doctorindy Larry Rice passed away in 2009 of lung cancer, lived abroad a couple years and always heard this call on ESPN international for the indycar races.
haha i was at that race and i remeber telling dad well sam could get him and he did. i really didnt care because i knew a rahal racer wsnt going to win but i did personally meet buddy rice in the pits.
@Digitalbumpin As opposed to what, blowjob??? Sam played it right and was a LOT faster on the last lap than Marco...something like 5 mph....that's how he closed on Marco so fast. I was there, in attendance, and it was a great race.
What do you want? a total domination? No Passing at the end of the race like all NASCAR races besides 'Dega and Daytona????? GTFO you turd
@boilersfan1 Mine too. I swore Marco won that, but I was in turn four and only saw them side by side so I just waited. It's good for Hornish. As a NASCAR fan, I think he'd have better luck back in IndyCar. Dario credits the NASCAR for all his success since. And Dario's damn good at what he does.
I hate when announcers say that phrase " he can't catch him, it's no way." Darrell Waltrip always says that and most of the time he is wrong. You have to remember what Rocky always said " it ain't over till it's over." Just ask the Houston Texans everytime the COLTS play them.
Good God, will all you assholes debating over NASCAR and Indy GROW UP!! Both motorsports are exciting and thrilling in their own ways, SHUT UP ALREADY!
@ilovetogofast88 Thank you, ilovetogofast88. This debate is silly. You can have your preferences when it comes to motorsports. I like all of them. NASCAR, Indycar, Formula 1, Off Road Racing, etc. They're all good and cool in their own ways.
why is every single goddamn video on youtube becoming a comment competition of which one is better indycar or nascar? nobody wants to read that crap anymore! it's not like you're gonna convince a fan of one to watch the other. And by the way I love both series cuz they both deliver great racing!
every one in nascar gos the same speed and the indy cars go the same speed as their competitors so its about the same difficulty all im saying is nascar gets like 6 finishes like that per year
out of all your examples i think hornish is the best and drivers like montoya are hated because they are way to agressive and cause wrecks and jeff gordon did a good job testing juan paublo's car a few years back plus i don't see to many nascar drivers converting to f1
@AJ1964 um yeah they all have failed. stewart grew up dirt racing so i knew he could win in nascar but no one else can. montoya hasn't won an oval race yet. Nascar is MUCH tougher then indy cars.
@AJ1964 Hornish, sucks, Montoya, just now got good, Stewart is one of the best in the world as is Foyt. Your logic is out of this world. Dumb ass hater
@MurphyMonster would love to see what Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Dale Jr., could do at speed. I mean real speed 220+ mph. Its all about speed.
I can't believe EVERYONE called Marco as winning the 500-Mile Race before he won it. They ALL...ABC, IMSRN, the secondary radio calls...every one of 'em, broke the cardinal rule established by Sid Collins, that NOTHING is guaranteed in this race before it actually occurs.
I agree, and they didn't mentioned it like once.... They're saying "A rookie is going to win, Marco's gonna win this thing, Marco's gonna win...." and so on. A good lesson for commentators.
i wonder if marco had taken the inside (or even outside) trying to take away the draft...maybe he woulda won. Or maybe hornish just had too much momentum off of turn 4. oh well...
lol you think a pass for the lead late in the race when its a restrictor plate race equals an exciting race? The 08 Indy 500 had plenty of passing as did the 07 race, and it was not manufactured passing either.
Indy its different because the cars are faster so it would have 2 b extraordinary 2 b a photo finish and there is a different skill set needed 2 win in the IRL than in NASCAR
They all called it wrong, "Marco the winner" before the finish. Indy is still Indy, but the radio network has changed; would Sid and the boys have called it before the ABSOLUTE end? I doubt it.
Well, they really thought that Hornish didn't have the momentum to catch Marco, so they "assumed" (and we all know what happens when you "ass-ume" something (it just makes an "ass" out of "u and me!") And, it made asses out of all those commentators!!
This finish was great. I live in Indy so the race gets blacked out (we finally wised up and bought tickets) but I remember listening to it on the radio and when they said that Hornish won at the last second my dad and I just looked at each other and said "What the hell was that?!" haha
Marco was too careful and it cost him. Look how low his line is going into turn three. Hornish uses all the road and erases Marco's lead in one corner.
Marco could have done the traditional dive towards the pit wall (wave & the team) and gotten away with it, but Sam might have swung to the outside and got him anyway.
i agree at first i thought if he dived to the inside more coming out of turn 4 that he may have been able to hold Sam off, but then he'd probably go to the outside and get him that way.
The best two Andretti's have already raced sir, Mario and Michael. Marco hasn't shown me anything since this race and Sonoma of '06, 2007 was as ugly as it could get for him and this year he already has 2 DNF's in 4 starts at St Pete and Motegi(0 laps complete at Motegi)Not looking good so far.
hey all i'm saying is I don't feel the kid will be as good as grandpa or dad was. Yes he's 21 and has a lot of time to develop, but at Miami in 2007 when he climbed out of the car because he was afraid of it. Don't recall that playing out with Michael or Mario but maybe it did.
Yes, because you know for sure it was because he was afraid of it. Besides, if the car is that wrong that you don't feel the slightest bit safe driving it, then you're playing with your life and those of others if you stick with it.
@cle17930 As did I! It was nice to see the hometown boy win, especially when everyone called it for Marco, and especially considering Hornish came back from a penalty!
LOL, these commentators are retarded. "Oh and with that Marco will win the race. White flag comes out now. Marco will win the race. I am one thousand percent certain that Marco will win the race. Down the backstraight as the winner of the race Marco Andretti is on his way to winning the race as a rookie winner. Now Marco, who is going to win the race, comes off the final turn OH AND SAM HORNISH WINS!"
Marco blew the race on the entry to Turn 3. If you pause it, you can see he starts his turn-in earlier and a full car-width farther down than Hornish does. He must have had to get out of the throttle big time near the apex because Hornish was right on his tail by the time they entered the short chute. An awesome finish, though!
What's with all the whiners on this video? I enjoy Indy, NASCAR, F1, Grand-am, etc its all racing...

08 Daytona 500 50th running and great finish.
08 Indy 500 dominated by Dixon.
07 Daytona 500 photo finish with Harvick and Martin.
07 Indy 500 rain shortened.
06 Daytona 500 Johnson takes lead in late stages and wins.
06 Indy 500 Awesome (but not a photo finish) with Hornish and Andretti.

Famous phrases of the Andretti's...
"Mario is slowing on the backstretch"
"And Michael is slowing down at Indianapolis"
and Marco, "There goes the halfshaft..."

Marco will end up bein the best Andretti of the lot. Michael most likely won't win it, but Marco will win multiple 500's.

Marco is 21 years old, you oaf.

hey all i'm saying is I don't feel the kid will be as good as grandpa or dad was. Yes he's 21 and has a lot of time to develop, but at Miami in 2007 when he climbed out of the car because he was afraid of it. Don't recall that playing out with Michael or Mario but maybe it did.
wags2010 3 years ago
Yes, because you know for sure it was because he was afraid of it. Besides, if the car is that wrong that you don't feel the slightest bit safe driving it, then you're playing with your life and those of others if you stick with it.

Race isn't over till the checkered flag waves, but I just had that feeling that Hornish won it coming out of turn Four.
Wish him luck in NASCAR

I went fuckin nuts when Hornish won that race!

I couldn't have said it better I did the same.

@cle17930 As did I! It was nice to see the hometown boy win, especially when everyone called it for Marco, and especially considering Hornish came back from a penalty!

All Indy 500's have been excellent. 96-2001 were a little weak but its getting more competitive. Unfortunate because of the slit though.
