Gilels plays this a bit too classically but it's still an excellent performance (from a new perspective) and probably the most overlooked piano piece of the 20th century.
However, there's one piece i`ve heard by Medtner which is a very special category: Prologue op.1 no.1.....Jonathan Powell has played it quite a few times.
This sonata is on a live recording by Mr. Gilels from a recital in the Moscow Conservatory on the 23rd dec. 1968. On this CD is also Chopin's etude in A flat Minor op. posth. People who admire Mr. Gilels, like myself, will like to hear it. I could'nt find it on YT. Maybe somebody could post it, that's a bit difficult for me.
It is on a Melodiya CD nr. 10 00790. Just two minutes, endless music. Good luck.
I adore Gilels all my life, heard him live many times. Of course This sonata is great work and could be played many different ways (like everything). Gilels plays wonderfully but here on YT there is Svetlanov's interpretation, also extremely interesting and meanningful.
Sorry, but I can not agree. With all my respect to Svetlanov as a conductor, his piano interpretation of this piece is the worst I have ever heard. He made out of it something very mannered and pretentious, completely loosing the core of this music. I was a toddler, when my mother, being a conservatoire student, studied this Sonata... Then I myself became a pianist. Gilels' interpretation is wonderful.
I wish I knew how to speak Italian. Gilels was the most wonderful person. Franz Mohr autographed my Steinway B, and gave me his book to read. What he said about the Gilels was special.
Thank you for posting this. My parents threw out our vinyl copy of Gilel's at Carnegy Hall while I was away at college. This was my favorite piece. I have been looking for this for years. Score!!! for a wonderful Sunday evening concert. I have copies of other's at the piano...its just not the same. Thank you Thank you
This is one of my favorite Medtner pieces. Thanks a lot for uploading! Medtner is a true Russian gem and Emil Giles playing here is absolutely splendid.
Magnificently!

I adore Gilels too. For many pieces he is outstanding and the best, a class of his own, passionate and powerful.
However not always, of course, his interpretation is the best. I have just compared his Appassionata with S. Richter´s...
