the original image isn't bad at all actually i like it better than second one you showed. it looked more artsy if that is a word. lol and i barely noticed the grass in the background untill you pointed it out. lol
But you are right with the slightly edited picture having more detail.
@dethmerc I wasn't really trying to make it better (although I do think it's better), but to show the extent to which Lightroom can pull back detail from blown out areas in a RAW image. The image obviously loses some detail/quality in the video but seeing those leaves appear in Lightroom was phenomenal!
@NikonTom28 I'd suggest that since many people have commented that they found the video useful, the fail is yours. The universe does not revolve around what you want, and nobody on Youtube owes you anything.
@starfedrogue I just stating my opinion. I know the UNIVERSE does not move around me. Actually we are quite little in this Planet compare to the immense of the Universe, so... I guess Aliens will give a shit about me giving a Fail to your FAIL video of RAW and Lr... so... have a blast will ya? cheers!
@richietime I have taken the hint and started a short series about Lightroom. The first episode is posted as a response to this video, and deals with the guts of keywords.
@richietime Apparently not for the people who found it to be a great demonstration of why they should be using RAW. You can't force your subjective reaction to be an objective appraisal - it just doesn't work that way.
wow, you have got a really great voice, i could listen to you talking about anything for hours. soo relaxing! on a more topic related note, thank you for this brilliant reason why everybody should shoot raw :)
@c3806md So you managed to bypass the meaning of the title, the very first line of the video, the video description, and the annotation designed specifically to address the foot-stamping demands of egotistical juveniles such as yourself, and yet I'm the "stupid gay".
@c3806md You little fag, he put that starting title there just for you, do you feel special? You should do, because thats the sort of school you should be going to.
So really this isn't a video about Lightroom 3 at all, but about the abilities of the RAW format. As you said this could have been done in Photoshop, or ACDSee or any RAW editor.
@AluminumHaste I think the title of the video, the description, and the first few seconds quite adequately summarise what is in the video. Naturally I wouldn't attempt to cover an entire software release from experiences with a beta test.
Would you suggest buying just lightroom, or would you suggest buying photoshop as well. If you suggest both, what does photoshop do that lightroom does not that a photographer would be most interested in?
@captainjman1976 I'm sorry but I really can't answer that adequately in a 500 character Youtube comment. The general rule of thumb is that Lightroom is geared towards managing large collections of photos and modifying their attributes, whereas Photoshop is geared towards more intensive manipulation, editing, and proofing of individual images.
@captainjman1976 Lightroom is mainly to develop your RAW images and give them the correct exposure, color and some other basic adjustments. I also recommend you to buy Photoshop. This will help you give your images more effects. In Photoshop you will be able to edit and manipulate photos with more freedom and in different layers. Greets!
Commiting yourself to adjusting images willy nilly is bad practice. Iv`e been shooting digital for about ten years and have used photoshop for most of that time. I use raw sometimes, but jpeg mostly, Why..? because it works and i get great results. A properly exposed image in most conditions will not require much adjustment, i usually take about a 30 secs. In high contrast Raw can help, but it`s all extra work. Avoid high contrast, take time over composition & set the camera properly. It works.!
Who said anything about adjusting willy-nilly? You choose the file format that is most appropriate for the circumstances, as you would with any other setting.
The fantastic thing about Lightroom is that it is non-destructive, and you can quickly create many variations from the same file with a full history of all the actions applied to every image. I love it!
You're really having a lot of fun, aren't you, starfed. I'm happy to see you happily occupied, even though I am not into photography and things like that. It is educational though, but most of all, I just like you and your vids.
How could you ever think I am stalking you, starfed? I subscribed to your channel because you have a rational, civil, calm, and constructive way of talking to theists and creationists, and your videos are a source of knowledge and education for me.
I like to leave positive comments to the people I subscribe to, as they deserve. If you think this is stalking, should I cease to comment on your productions?
In the near future I'm hoping to jump on the DSLR bandwagon, however until I saved up enough I will have to make due with a Canon Powershot S5IS. This camera only has the option to save in JPEG format. However just recently I found out there is a so called CHDK firmware hack. Some of the key features it would enable are: RAW, override parameters, live histogram, bracketing, motion detection, zebra mode, and many more.
Have you heard of this and or have any experience with it?
How high is the dynamic range in raw formats these days? I was messing with some 12bit nikon format few years back but it didn't quite compare to full hdr.
Are there any consumer cameras that have full floating point accuracy or will you always need multiple exposures for higher quality?
Sorry, somehow missed this question at the time it was posted.
To be honest I am not sure. I do not create commercially intended HDR images so I have not really bothered to research in that depth (if you'll pardon the pun).
I'd never tried to get JPEGs into Camera RAW through PS, so I just assumed it was a Bridge thing when I managed to do it through Bridge. Haha.
And I only toyed around with it for a minute or two... perhaps I jumped the gun a bit with that comment. =-X
haha.
Anyway, do you know if Lightroom supports different color profiles, now? I tried out Lightroom 1 a while ago, and it only worked with one color profile (which didn't match my default one, so my images always came out weird.)
True you can get really ArtStyle with purple skies and the likes.
Not to mention you can import it under 16 bits mode into Photoshop giving you such a lattitude! Most Camera Sensors are either 12 or 14 bits. If you shoot JPG you only retain 8 bits. That is a huge difference..
Part of it is having a good eye for interesting shapes, textures, the alignment of objects or light and shadow... I am nowhere near being able to always "see the photo" yet when I look at a scene. But much better at it than I used to be! So it is definitely learnable.

not against using raw, i use raw.

You shouldn't even put attention to those comments.. Otherwise you first need to explain him what is RAW at all, and all in spanish. :)
What you explain is certainly true. RAW images are the best way to work and finish photos. Greets!

Bridge can open JPEG images in its RAW editor, and does a pretty good job mimicking the effect you can get in photoshop with its RAW editor.
... in case you weren't aware. =-D
TomConger 2 years ago
When you say Bridge's RAW editor, I presume you mean "Adobe Camera Raw"? Bridge and Photoshop both open RAW images in this same application.
Saying it mimics the effect of raw editing is a bold claim! You will never recover detail from a JPEG. Ever. Forever-never. Nuh-uh.

I am not sure about importing to the catalogue but certainly when you export you get to select a colour profile.

The side by side images there is an amazing difference in glare. There is definitely a skill in photography, that I do not possess.
