All the governements around the world (including USA) bought Marconi's apparatus and not that one of Tesla which never existed, despite Tesla had worked for US multinationals with the availability of the best laboratories in the world. Ferraris invented AC motor not Tesla who tried to ripp off Ferraris by claiming in his autobiography that he came out with the idea before the italian scientist. All the other Tesla's inventions were developed by others and not Tesla, check it well.

@Caleidus he worked independently from Ferraris so no he never. Marconi and Edison worked with Tesla and stole his ideas so they are thieves and over-rated. What Tesla did was second to none for the progression of man-kind. I'll give you a few examples:- A/C power, radio, robotics, wireless transfer of electricity as well as predicting the internet. If you do a bit of research you will see he was using a router over 100 years ago. I would say he is the most UNDER-RATED scientist in history.

If he had invented the radio before Marconi he would have built it with cheap material as Marconi did and showed it to world, just to prove that he was the first one capable of doing it, but he didn't do it because he didn' invent the radio.None (including Tesla) was able to reproduce Marconi's results if not after 1899.

And yes he rubbed shoulders with the likes of Mark Twain so maybe he did want fame, maybe he wanted his brilliance recognised, that is not the issue you mentioned. Without the ideas of Tesla this world would be a darker place, think about A/C power alone, without this there would need to be a power station every mile or so.
