It is an external fuel tank for longer range or more time aloft - after it is used up it is ejected to reduce weight. I know a guy who works on software for these things.

Personally, I think they should stick to human-flown birds...not as much chance of missing when firing ordinance. UNLESS more tonnage is required to pacify the enemy.
