The music was composed so that there would be no music when Praxis exploded, to let the audience soak in the explosion. I really don't want to argue science with you, because I am fully aware that space is a soundless vacccuum, and Star Trek is unrealistic in this way, among many others.
How what? Oh, What I mean by that is this Star Trek was very high octane and hardcore extreme action of all Star Trek films like Casino Royale was the same. The best of the series. I always did love the more intense and darker sequels than the lighter predecessors.
Director Nick Meyer contracted Cliff Eidelman after NM's plans for using an orchestrated version of Holst's The Planets fell through over right issues. It turned out that Eidelman wrote extensively on The Planets in University and understood deeply The Firebird themes by Stravinsk that Meyer was thinking of also using when Meyer heard his demo tape and knew he was the guy. (Also Goldsmith and Horner exceeded VI's budget quotes). Meyer, though, knew what he wanted and got it.
If anyone wants to hear very similar music to the first notes of this piece, do a youtube search for the Introduction from Stravinsky's "The Firebird" and also the first movement of Shostakovich's 6th Symphony . Not that I blame Eidelmann, it's a great score.
This sets in the mood for the rest of the film, I would say out of all six films this is probably the darkest, yes Wrath of Kahn was quite dark in places but this is by far the darkest
Not the most original score ever written - with more than heavy nods to Elfman's Batman score and Holst's The Planets (particularly "Mars") - but indeed an enjoyable Trek score from Mr. Eidelman.
Not just one of my favourite Star Trek themes, but one of my all time favourite pieces of music. ;)

I love Wrath of Khan but this, in my humble opinion, is my favorite ST film featuring the original cast.

love this theme, excellent stuff-very dark and brooding like most of the film

This is such a great score. Dark, forboding, and martial at its core!
