  • this is just purely amazing! i love how he's wearing boots too :)

  • There's a 13 minute "studio" version that I can't seem to find ANYWHERE, anyone else come across it? I think it's the best version of all of them. It's not the live 13 minute one here on youtube where he's talking for a few minutes in the beginning.

  • this is one of those songs you see live and just chills you to the bone and your hooked for life!

  • Toooo goooddd!

  • Ahahahah I love that..."can you turn up my foot just a little bit please"...

  • He would have hated having to talk in the middle of it. Beautiful version.

  • He would have hated having to talk in the middle of it.

  • I didn't know Wolverine (or SabreTooth rather) could play the guitar so well. Those talons are VICIOUS!

  • Check out my "attempt" to cover Ocean, mines the max sessions version though. i did my best :) hope you like it

  • this is how all australians play guitar

  • @Jeff09ification Yeahno. I'm aussie and I try play this and my fingers go to shit.

  • @Jeff09ification damn straight

  • er spielt vor alten deutschen? und er hat sogar den song daran angepasst

  • My foot goes to 11

  • its hard to believe that some people don't like this

  • Sorry tenacious D.. THIS is the greatest and best song in the wo-orld

  • "Could you turn up my foot a little bit?" -John Butler

  • this man is the reason i want a 12 string guitar

  • woah..

  • wonderful.... but i prefer the original version....

  • @cihairottoicoglioni

there is no original version. Each time he plays it , he changes it and thats why this piece is unique :)

  • @thesoulphysician that's the greatest thing about songs like this... you just write an "idea" for a song, so you won't get stuck in the same thing, you can always play it differently

  • @thesoulphysician i love the version he played at federation square.... in my opinion it's the best one that i have heard. :)

  • another reason to admire him XD i'm italian and here he isn't yet well known but i love this song...his face when he's playing is so fucking happy...:D

  • @cihairottoicoglioni

The album version and the Max Sessions one are my personal favourites.

  • 3 people dont know what feelings sound like.

  • it's an 11 string guitar. pause it at like 0:11 and count the "little silver things"

  • @bobbyflay right, or count the pegs on the bridge.

  • This song is like human emotion, constantly changing, but always beautiful in some way.

  • i was gonna masterbate. but choose to listen to this instead.

  • @xXxFaLLeNxShaDoWxXx

i did both, i finished faster listening to this tbh

  • E.P.I.C.!!!!

  • Why does he remove the G-string? :)

    but seriously?

  • @jerantjor I guess its mainly just personal preference. It's the way he likes to play and he probably just likes the sound of one g string rather than two. Either that, or it might get in the way having two because a lot of the hammer on/pull off stuff he does is around the g string. Hope that helped :)

  • @jerantjor Because in this song the 2nd G string (which I believe is an A string, i'm not too familiar with 12 string guitars) is too easily snapped, so he just takes it off.

  • @Rochambo7 It's a g string, simple, just saying. 3rd from the bottom, in standard, it's the g string, in open c, it's still g.

  • @jerantjor to get the sound he wants, I guess

  • @jerantjor he says it makes the guitar sound too trebly

  • Does anyone recognise what pedals he is using?

  • this song reminds me of life

  • what this song makes me feel is what all music should make EVERYONE feel.

  • love the band... see it live in hamburg - germany

  • @thesoulphysician

Dude... every version of this song is a nice version :-)

  • when he says that... you know shit's about to go down.

  • i love this guitar !

    looks so nice. (:

  • Mr Butler plays with aplomb..but please check out Egberto Gismonti...( which if JB has any nouce already has.) EG...is a true world colussus of music and is Brazilian...nuff said...how many 'drone' songs with similar chord progressions..i.e. not many can we take?

Carlo Domeniconi's 'Koyunbaba' (Gismonti influenced)..please listen to it...by many artists..John Williams is a start....

A lot of this stuff is showmanship...a fleeting glimpse into what the guitar can really achieve...

  • What more can you say - John Butler is truly amazing, he makes the world just so much more bearable. Love this track and all the other versions of it.

  • What more can you say - John Butler is truly amazing, he makes the world just so much more bearable. Love this track and all the other versions of it.

  • haha i have this as download

  • @linnylolo

What more can you say - John Butler is truly amazing, he makes the world just so much more bearable. Love this track and all the other versions of it.

  • Do you think its possible he used sharpie or some other sort of permant ink marker on his guitar to do that? I was kind of hoping to do my own design in a similar fashion

  • just had an eargasm

  • i love the drawings on his guitar

  • I love how he never plays it exactly the same everytime in performance. Just plays it the way his feelings replicate at the time. It's true art.

  • Absolutely incredible! I wish the song was even longer. Great driving/relaxing music. Quite a talent, mate!

  • @johnbutler257 there's a 12 minutes version of it, recorded in a studio

    im just sayin

  • everytime he plays this song.... i feel the passion... or putting it in hindi... the junoon.!!

    just love it.!!!

  • check out my video of ocean by john butler. it is performed at brisbane riverstage 2010. subscribe while your at it :P

  • by foot he meant his stomp box.

  • @TheWebcamcomedy No he really means his foot =P It's kinda like a bass drum in a way.

  • @irontires yes, i knoe for short hand he says foot. but its called a stomp box.

  • @irontires wow your a fucking idiot. do you see a bass drum in front of him?? no, because he is using a stompbox faggot.

  • @RaptorJMR Your reaction seems unwarrantedly mean-spirited.

  • @irontires yes that is just lingo for stomp box. what there called

  • I dont play guitar...but i wanted to see, so i borrowed some earplugs and a guitar, to see if i could jus fake it.....HAHA HELL NO, had things hurting i didnt know i had....on his 15 min version i thought his arms gonna pop...jus imo, i prob wrong

  • i love it how he gets there playin in boots

  • @Lisahh29 This is Lisa R? Cos it meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee RMW!!! you know, ur friend, Lydia W :)

  • @tulupgirl bahahahahhaha

  • on his other guitar is also one g string missing...^^

  • @87ruts HOW THE HELL IS THIS JUST 'ALRIGHT' THIS IS FUKIN AMAZING!!!

LETS SEE YOU PLAY SOMETHING HALF AS GOOD AS THIS!! I bet you fucking cant your wanker

  • sounds great, what guitar is that?

  • 4:00 makes my spine shiver!

  • fucking amazing.

  • when you listen to this song you kinda feel like everything is going to be amazing!!

  • @87ruts dude, john butler is 10 times the person you could ever be, he wouldnt go round youtube dissing anyone who has made their life successful by doing what they love so fuck off and dont bother watching stuff that you think is shit you sad ass

  • words will never describe what goes on with this song, you can tell that this song is very special to him ....its so freaking incredible i could be in the worst mood....all i gotta do is hear this

  • If we ever meet aliens we should have them listen to this song before we ruin their first impression of us by talking.

  • BEST LYRICS EVER!!!!!!!! can you turn my foot up a little bit please

  • I LOVE IT

  • Awesom... :)

  • beautiful guitar anyone know the brand ? and where i can get some one to paint that sunrise over sea on My guitar ? :P

  • @bugkillah

it looks like a Takamine bud. I have no idea about the paint job though!

  • meh its alright it's not grate buts its alright

  • @87ruts you fail at life.

  • @87ruts I believe you suffer from an ailment called retardation.

  • @87ruts

Lol get slit you fat waste of life.

  • There's nothing i can say here not a single word, not one single word this song speaks louder than any shitty message i could ever type.

  • i want to make babies with that guitar

  • O.O !! i almost jizz in my pants right there !! holy crap this is just amazing !!

  • Seriously one of the funnest songs to play. As long as your foot is turned up enough. Haha.

  • Amazing......

  • fuuuuucccckkkkin a

  • when i listen to this song i just feel love peace and harmony

I could cry soo beautiful this song is

    thank you john!

  • dammit the quote in the beginning got me haha. thats exactly how I can describe this song

  • where can i get someone to draw on my guitar like that

  • he's incredibly

  • this guy is insane

    BUT I LOVE IT

  • Can you turn up my foot just a little bit please.

  • Why did he take off a string?

  • Because the octave G string on 12 string guitars breaks all the time. It's a very annoying thing too, as they can pretty much break whenever, so you see some people just take it off.

  • @edusty2010 ya i think he did it because he didnt want the extra octive on the guitar... its just three frets below the high E so i understand why he did

  • The string he removed is the highest string on the guitar, normally the highest string is on the bottom of the guitar, but on a 12 string the highest string is in the middle, its quite annoying.

  • @goalieh87 it gives the guitar a slightly smoother and cleaner sound

  • @goalieh87 personal preference

  • my guess its in the middle and a little harder to hit the notes when he really gets cookin. picking on a 12 string is different.

  • @goalieh87 He says it makes the guitar sound too trebly

  • Anyone know how, who or what with he did the artwork on his guitar with ??? Ill give you candy if you tell me ???

  • ich kann es kaum erwarten, ihn in Deutschland zu sehen/hören

  • top 3 ocean versions: 1. max sessions 2. this one 3. federation square

but they all have some unique parts that gives me the chills everytime :) <3

like right after 2:30 in this one (2.35)

  • SO right!

  • I agree! I like them all but I LOVE the Max Sessions version!

  • I don't like this version as much.

  • i love the federation square version a little more, which is saying something..

  • This guy is incredible!

  • i got a cramp from just tapping my foot along with him, john butler is awesome

  • @CtrlAltDaLEET LOL same here

  • forget about the fucking strings and share this music to everybody

  • damn vizzez for president. U got some wise words mate!

peace and love and john butler music!!! for EVERYONE!!

  • Yeah but its a 12 string guitar with 11 strings. So its still a 12 string guitar. If you snap a normal guitar string it wouldn't be a 5 string guitar, it'd still be a normal regular guitar. :P

  • Actually he has it custom made for 11 strings, he broke the high G string all the time back in the day, as said earlier, it doesnt really affect the tone, but theres a swirl cut out on the head of the guitar where the tuner should be :P the guy who makes his guitars a mad dude. But none the less, i see ur logic :)

  • Fair enough! Ugh, I'm off to learn the 'fast part' of Ocean, Its like one of the signature licks in any Ocean rendition and I can't do it very well :P. This song never fails to inspire me.

  • It's an 11 string guitar. Look at the headstock, it has just 11 machine heads. ;)

So it's an 11 string guitar

  • You're not gonna find a better twelve stringer anywhere.

  • Its actually 11 string

  • wel its a twelve string guitar with da g taken out

  • hence 11 string.... yes, the guitar can hold 12, but it doesn't have that many... 11

  • I think you would. Considering this is an eleven stringer.

  • 11 strings dude ;) but yeah, i agree.

  • he's an 11 stringer

  • The guitar still has the same tone as a twelve string, I'm sorry everyone is so uptight about the number of strings on a guitar.

  • I'm finding it pretty hilarious how eager the internet is to correct somebody, though.

If it's any consolation, I knew what you meant.

  • he ment please turn up my foot cos he has that little bass box under his foot lmao

  • All I can say is, WOW!!!

  • he has some good artwork on his guitar

  • da best

  • I LOVE THIS GUY hes MAD!!

  • I'm mad also, do you love me too? :D

hahha, just kidding! He IS AWESOME!!!

  • does anyone know if they recorded any more songs at this particular venue besides this and "what you want" ? if so i guess they are not on youtube?

  • There's Betterman too, look in the related videos.

  • ahh cool thanks i didnt notice that b4

  • It's great but.....

John ti consumi le unghie così!

  • he IS art.

  • fucking skillzzzz A++++++++

  • at the concert ive been to, the lenght of this song was about 13 minutes!! But i really like this version too!

  • This is awesome! Very amazing video! Awesome Guitar!

  • haha good comment dude...this music is unbelivable perfect..

    peace from brazil ;)

  • I think because he changes the song as the ocean changes... Its never the same.

  • he doesn't change it.

    it just floats!

  • HOW DO YOU DOWNLOAD THIS????

  • I love the art on his guitar.

  • like it said on the tin "nice version".

Have got 5 versions of Ocean recorded now.I wonder if it's possible to make a whole album out of one song lol !

  • how did you get the different versions?

  • I used a You Tube downloader.Just google "You Tube Downloader".

  • i didnt know he used the bass drum too.

  • Huh? He doesn't use the bass drum?

He's tapping his foot, I think that may be what your hearing.

  • He's using a stomp box.

  • i think what this dude is hearing is not a bass drum or a stomp box its just the sound his hand makes when he hits the string.

  • He says "Can you turn up my foot, please?" to one of the stage techs. What do you think he's wearing, magic stompy boots attached to an amp?

  • Comment removed

  • He's probably using a stomp box, or maybe there's just a mic down there to help him keep time.

It's definitely not a bass drum, do you see a giant drum in front of him? Nope.

  • he has a mic.

if you listen you can hear him tapping his foot to add a beat in the second half. watch at 2.45 :)

  • Love this song and his sweater!

the federation square ocean is my favorite

  • When i listen to this i find myself closing my eyes tapping my foot, thinking of nothing but good times, so so so beautiful....=)

  • wow, that's all i can really say, this is amazing.

  • seriously amazing, blows my mind cant stop listening to this...

  • This is an awesome version.

    A truely blessed musician.

My favorite! Cant wait to see them again when they come back to Boston....

    ~~Peace~~

  • does anyone know what effects or amp he uses

  • He always use Marshall amps and some Boss effects like distortion also wah wah

  • I listened to this when I ate some boomers...love it

  • musical genius

  • this man has talent.

and whats really unique is that he's using a twelve string guitar, but fingerpicking each of the strings individually, rather than two at a time like other guitarists.

  • im not saying he doesnt do that sometimes, but he usually does 2 at a time

  • i love his guitar

  • Great version, but Federation Square is a more passioante performance. And he uses his Grandfather's 1930's guitar that was given to him as a teenager.

  • He doesnt use the Dobro in the song but yes he does use it in the parformance...if thats what u meant ;)

  • How else could you possibly construe what I meant?

  • WOW, beautiful song, it brings so much nice memories from my life:D

  • If I'm not wrong he always uses some slight vintage-effect when playing this song (all songs)?

I've subscribed at almost all Ocean versions I think and at this several times but... what can you say!? :D

This is btw the second best version for me, after Max Sessions, but this one is much more chill! Every single one of them is as said unique and GENIUS!

  • If you mean vintage guitar, he usually uses his grandfather's vintage, which was given to him as a teenager
