LOL, this takes me back some. Always used to try and guess which way Worzell was going to fall at the end. Still makes me laugh now seeing him fall flat!
damn just typed in worzel gummidge im 35 this takes me back to sunday mornings almost 30 years ago cuppa tea an a slice a cake with aunt sally, and can anyone remember a kids show called catweezle? where does the time go to ,wish i could turn back the clocks. used to watch this at my grans on sunday mornings the guy had a robins nest in his cheast me thinks.
Great story in Peter Kay's book about when Jon Pertwee made an appearance at a fete as Worzel and Peter grabbed a piece of hay off his costume and Pertwee told him to Fuck Off and he was only 9
I keep watching it,again and again, even when i get home pissed from the pub Ive gotta see worzel...Oh man so many memories from this as a kid - though wasnt drinking then,as a 7 year old...Can we not go back to the late 70s/80s,when England was England??
It was that one opening credit in the rain that did me in... As soon as that was over I got out from behind the couch and watched happily. I was a sensitive child though...
Why do people keep saying Worzel Gummidge was dark?.... Dark?...Scary?.. I was born in 1978 and spent my early childhood watching Worzel and loved it! I only ever thought it was funny, certainly not scary! I've also just sat with my two children who are 9 and 5 to show them Worzel Gummidge for the first time. They also loved it and didn't find Worzel scary.
Top programme. I remember it being much scarier at this start than this. Wasn't there an open sequence in which it rained? And as the children went past in the car, his head turned and watched them! Maybe my over active childhood imagination playing up.....
It's interesting as in the first series, the worzel gummidge character came across as a slightly darker but still very funny character. The first series was also alot more faithful to the novels. But as the series progressed, the worzel gummidge character became a completely hilarious and very funny comedy character, especially in the Down Under series. :) Classic British comdy series from the very late 1970's/very early1980's that was originally based on a series of novels.
The end credits always used to scare the sh*t outta me, the bit where he falls off his perch and screams. My sister used to drag me into the living room to make me watch it.
It's sad seeing Charlotte Coleman who played Sue as she died tragically young 33 due to an asthma attack. She was a good actress who seemed to love life. The worlds a cruel sometimes.
The first title sequence is the best - with Pertwee just turning round and smiling gleefully, then from the second series it gets worse, then the third series they totally ruined it with clips from the show - and I think i want to forget the theme tune to the New Zealand version.
used to love this but was absolutely terrified of him as a wee lass. my mum bought me a Worzel doll and my sister got aunt sally....I can tell you now I wasn't impressed. I think he became the serial killer in all our Barbie games....poor Worzel....
I used to watch this when I was like 5, one of the last credits shown here, used to scare the hell out of me when he jump to turn at the camera smiling... it was scary for a 5 year old and I still watched it! haha!
the title credits used to scare the shit out of me when i was a kid, i had nightmares about the creepy fucker sneaking into my bedroom.. thanks a lot mr pertwee, i am scarred for life lol
As you always were guessing which way he would fall, I loved the way in one of the episodes the cross teetered slightly forwards before going backwards.
I absolutly adored watchin Worzel as a little girl. I went out and bought the dvd to show my children and guess what my youngest daughter of 4 yrs of age has fallen for him as well!!!
I absolutely loved Worzel Gummidge as a child...My sister and i would place bets to see whether he fell backwards or forwards once he was on his post!! Ah,the nostalgia!!
Everytime I thought of Worzel I got a tune in my head and every clip I watched had a different one which I still recognized but I was sure there was another one. Now I know it was from Worzel Down Under, lol
I had read an article about his passing in 2007 after someone mentioned on here, but now I can't find it and there is nothing in his imdb profile to suggest he had passed away. Perhaps it was mistakenly reported to be him and later corrected...but I do remember seeing the story at one point.
Some programs I look back on fondly and some I don't. This is one I don't. Gave me the creeps then and it's given me the creeps now. I think if I ever saw a scarecrow come alive - I'd have to shoot it, then burn it. Hear that Worzel!
Oh My God!! I remember this programme on TV when I was a kid - In fact it was one of my favourite programmes on TV at the time! Thanks for sharing mate!
This show usd to scare me as a kid..it still kinda does lol!!

Wasn't Jon Pertwee married to Jean Marsh (aka Rose from Upstairs Downstairs) for a time in the early sixties? I don't think it lasted.
