People who criticize his playing can keep on trying to play everything like Scruggs note for note. I have picked with James several times and he is a very nice guy that enjoys picking.

James McKinney is a really creative banjo player that gives me a headache sometimes! Some of his ideas are nice, but a few nice ideas go a long way, especially with the banjo. I think the tragic thing about the vid is how out of tune James' third string is--it really hurt my ears. Other than that, it was a fine vid (every one else was cool). The only thing that made me groan was the ridiculous break James did at 1:18. . just a LITTLE much!!

I think he's the best in the world. One time, I was jamming with a group at a fiddler's convention on the banjo and he walked up and started playing, well, I was absolutely floored, I couldn't sleep all that night.
