Thank you for this interesting briefing on the history of the place.I don't know anything about this era,except of course the song we sang a couple of decades ago...(London bridge is falling down ,falling down,falling down...)As for the book I mentioned,it's called "ALBATROS" and it is set in south London(Tooley str) late 19th century.Thanks again

There was a nice pub in the area,"the elusive camel",at least I think it was.I wanted to visit Tooley street because of a book I read.Why did you always want to go there?

Since my last name is Tooley, I felt that there might me some connection.

Turns out that Tooley Street takes its name from the Norwegian King Olaf who attacked London in 1009. He became an ally of London and a saint. London Bridge was built in 1176 and St Olaf's church was built next to it. By degrees "St Olaf's Street" became Tooley Street.

Oh, well. The Guiness was great.

You can see the Elusive Camel at 1:25. I used to live on the estate round the back. (St.Olave's) In those days the pub was called the King of Belgium. There was a pub opposite called the Antigallican, which I have recently found out means against the french. lol
