But there are certain universals, like a mother's love for her child, that never go out of fashion. It seems Collingsworth is saying that patriotism is old fashioned, or something young people cannot appreciate, and he is casting doubt on whether Bryant's love of country is sincere. That's like asking a Christian, "But isn't God just a fad?"
