Anyone think the original was way better. Gene Wilder was funnier and he always said random things.Johnny Depp is funny, but he didn't say random things like "the suspense is terrible" or "all I ask for a tall ship and a star to sail her by". I think it would've been cool if Gene Wilder had been Willy Wonka's father in this one, instead of Christopher Lee. Then Wilder would've been in both movies. But I'm sure if he's still acting, or even if he's still alive.

Thumbs up if you watched Epic Movie before watching this movie. They spoof the candy room scene from this movie in Epic Movie and Crispen Glover was Willy Wonka (which is funny because he appeared in Gilbert Grape with Johnny Depp and later in Alice in Wonderland). Anyway, So, the Augustus character (spoofed by the guy from the Harold and Kumar movies) falls into a "chocolate river", which turns out to be a sewer. I can't help laughing when I watch this scene because of the scene in Epic Movie.

I still think Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is way better. Even though this film was made in 2005 and the the other was made in 1971, the effects in the 1971 movie were better. It was funnier and not so cheesy. I could just see Depp's Wonka getting made at Charlie and his grandfather for steeling fizzy lifting drinks and telling them they lost. And the tunnel sequence in the 1971 was better. I guess they didn't want to copy the original, even though there's alot of simular dialogue.

I like how there a appears to be a subtle sinisterness to Wonka which you can see in the short bit where he notices the pipe lowering towards Augustus and when he finally unlocks the gate for Veruca's father to go into the chute after her. It's almost like he's eliminating the children one by one: the gluttonous, the overly-competitive, the greedy and the cynical.

I remember the first time my mom saw the movie, the Oompa Loompa song in this scene had her literally laughing nonstop the whole time!
