@nolaparis There are many ways to set up an orchestra, and having the Double Basses to the conductors left is one of them.......Conductors prerogative.
In my opinion this piece needs to be played slower because of of it's depth and strong emotion. At this speed you can't possibly enjoy the dark dreary feeling that Tchaikovsky felt when composing this piece. Overall, great performance.
I love it. This the way we're working on playing the piece. The tempo fluctuations may not be written in, but not everything has to be written in the music for it to be there. Music is not a formula that is precise all the time. At times yes, but not all the time.
@Guitargamer91 Precisely! In my orchestra, we've been playing this for a while and as we improve on quality, tone, etc., we naturally start to add in the almost imperative tempo fluctuations. Granted, we're comprised of players from grades 6 to 12 (albeit the best in our region, I might add), but it's something that is unlocked sometimes without the need of neither a conductor nor written notation.
This was the first piece performed for the opening of Carnegie Hall in New York. It also indirectly led to Russian assistance and liberation of Serbia from the Ottoman Empire.
nice ending!

Does anyone know why the lower strings are sitting on the conductor's left? I'm just curious.

Epic. Absolutely Epic.

Seems a bit too fast for my taste. The tempo leads to a lack of feeling and seems a tad mechanical.

I think this is one if not the best stirring orchestral work,
together with his Violin Concerto.
Tchaikovsky a true master.
Thanks for posting Marche Slave.

Incredible. This is now my favorite rendition of my favorite symphony. Well done, Pletnev. Tchaikovsky would be proud.

@DanDaBug
With all due respect, this is no symphony at all. It is a separate orchestral piece.
