He had the surgery because a cyst formed in his vocal cords from an untreated throat infection , and they had to remove it.

@sakuramanganime At a concert his voice started going, so he went to a doctor about it, and they said his throat or his rib cage or something has swelled, or something was formed in there and they had to cut it out. I forgot exactly what happened but you can look it up.

I am so so glad that he didn't lost his voice completly! Then I wouldn't been able to see them live this year (2010) I wasn't a fan of them back then but I wish I were....well I have been it now for 1 year and a half and I am sooo happy !
