For those who don't know the differences between North and South Vietnam... Under the Geneva Convention of July 21, 1954, the DMZ of 17th parallel split the country into two countries. The North Vietnam was controlled by Communist, and South by Democracy. North Vietnamese Army not stopped attacking the South. Despite the fact that Paris Peace Accords of 1973 was ending the war, but the North continued to attack South Vietnam until capturing Saigon.

As a South Vietnamese soldier prosperity, a former U.S Marine, who grew up under the Vietnam Communist rules. I gotta say, the U.S Marines had done an outstanding job in the Battle of Tet Offensive in Hue. The Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army (NVA) were dirty ass attacking during the holiday while South Vietnamese troops went home to celebrate Tet with their families. In other words, never listened to the Communist they broke Paris Peace Accords of 1973 ending the war.

The US soldiers have always outperformed their enemies. Remember, don't hold the man/woman on the ground accountable for the mindless politics that caused their call of duty. I served in the 1st Cavalry Division in 1968 and 1969 in the Central Highlands of Vietnam as an infantry soldier. I honestly don't remember either side appearing cocky. Most of us were far too concerned and careful protecting ourselves and buddies to feel that way. I don't think it was possible to win, as the Vietnamese had an endless supply of replacements, while the anti-war sentiment in the US was pushing for us to get out of there.

As the war began I was in school in Austria. Every TV news we got the pics from Vietnam. The US Army was convinced, they will kill the Vietcong in 1-2 years. General Westmoreland, the commander said, they will be back home at Christmas 67. The big problem was, China and the Soviets supported the Vietcong with weapons, medicine and jets. The young Vietcong learned how to handle a MIG jetfighter. They got the best russian weapons and this was the problem.

@mattmatt1102 No The Amerikaners did accomplish something in vietnam. The main aim was containment of communism and Vietnam is only 1 country. The USA discouraged A Lot of countries in Southwest Asia from switching economic and political systems. If it wasnt for the war i wouldnt be surprised if that whole pocket was communistic

The VC greatly overestimated their abilities in the tet offensive as they hoped for a victory but were able to recover and use it for propaganda purposes even though they were destroyed as a military force.

We withdrew after nearly destroying the NVA and after destroyed the VC. It took them 2 years to recover to renew their offensive against the South Vietnamese forces. I'd say that we left with more than enough hurt given to the NVA :)

We won the initial war in Iraq, the civil war is separate from our original military invasion, was almost a loss but we managed to suceed in ending the civil war and establishing a functioning government. Somalia was not a war, it was a peacekeeping operation and we 'lost' it because the UN's decision to limit support to one warlord. Our strategy of non-partisanship was working, we were not calling the shots, only acting under the UN.

Afghanistan is separate.
