In the 1930s, there was a complaint against Radio station Trichy that they were giving importance only to Purandara Dasa and Tyagaraja kritis and ignoring Tamil 'isai'. This complaint was voiced by no less a person than Kalki! It was later only the likes of MS, MLV that made Purandara Dasa kritis popular in Tamilnadu.
So much love and sweetness in Ammas songs.Each one of them carry their own spiritual dosage and make you swirl in spiritual contortions.A true Bhakti saint.
iinscriptional evidence suggests Purandara Dasa was born in 1484 AD in Kshemapura, near Tirthahalli, Shivamogga district, Karnataka state source: wikipedia - refer for more details.
Not sure, how many are aware of Purandara Dasa's background. He was a money lender in his native village in Maharashtra. Though his was a ardent devotee of Panduranga, he was greedy. It was the Panduranga, who came to his home as a poor brahmin and made him realize that, money is not everything for him but he is born for a divine cause in this Kali. Unfortunately, the modern day could retain only few thousand of the lakhs of Purandara Dasa's composition.
@badarinarayana100 What I know is that he was always greedy but his wife made him know about krishna bakthi (but a poor brahmin is in the story but he just asks for money and purandaradasar rejects and his wife lends her chUdamani to that poor brahmin ) and when purandara asks for the choodamani she produces the same choodamani with krishna bakthi and sends it to purandara .he gets doubt as this poor brahmin gets the same choodamani to purandara to take that and give him money

Purandara Dasa was so rich he used to lend money to Kings( like lending to Reserve Bank/ Govt in modern times).
But he gave up everything to propagate Hari Nama. Bow this great soul.
Thanks for Uploading.

Wonderful Krithi by Purandaradasar and excellent rendition by Shri MS
Purandaradasar's contribution to the carnatic music is immense.
Today if there is a structured methodology to learn carnatic music, then it is the brain child of this great composer Purandaradasar.
A wealthy money lender relinquishing the materialistic life to turn spiritual and gift us such beautiful gems of carnatic music.
@kamakotisankara,
Thanks a lot for posting this video giving perumal dharisanam with this song.

This might the closest we can get to GOD in this mechanical world. Wish Amma had a rebirth. Sorry I might sound selfish with that statement.
