Unbelievable, not only can he play, he's a mastershowman, this guy in high gear still has overdrive & then some ... He played classical piano from 7 years old, no fly by night
This is raw energy Rock at its best......No gimmicks, no fancy over the top stage sets, no smoke bombs or pyrotechnics, just four guys up there pounding out in-your-face Rock.
fuck!!!..I never realized BADLANDS were this awesome! I followed Jake with Ozzy. First time I searched for this here. Couldn't get this album during the late 80's or was it 90's? in my country. Nice upload!
@danjcan Ray got A.I.D.S. from Ozzy after Ozzy took a dump on Randy's grave and butchered the Blizzard and Diary albums with neutered reissues...Ozzy's a money whoring cunt.
I'm sorry Bala but to me guy he doesnt sound like brian johnson or ozzy at all but more like Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin and little Geoff Tate from Queensryche except more bluesy.
Badass! I actually have this VHS. jake played custom orange skinned Marshalls here, which oddly enough sound like Orange amps on this vid more than any Marshall.
Jake....Greg...Ray....Killer music...awesome guitar...stomping bass.....whole lot of testoterone...Think it's getting awfully h o t in here! There needs to be a "LOVE" button....I think I've played this like 12 times in a row already...
i met jake and the band in saginaw michigan promoting their first release...he was by far ozzy's BEST guitarist he ever had...hands f^%king down...great showmanship...i miss you jake...come back home!
This was after Ozzy kicked him out of the Band. Jake among my favorites if not the one. Loved Brad Gillis as well, is kind of funny that Brad steped in to help Ozzy after Randys dead and the Jake step in for Brad. Awesom band, I have both albums.
Badlands played spotty shows because their singer was sick after late 1990. He had HIV and died from aids. So these shows where he can't hit notes, he's sick. And I always hated the fact that their club sets were often 50-55 minutes long. Just terrible. And it was Ray Gillen that did this to them I believe. They had room to grow into a post metal something. It's a shame. Soul Stealer off Voodoo Highway is as good as High Wire.
Although the quality audio/visual isn't very clear: it's still quite an treasure vintage live footage on the Bayou gator-boys BADLANDS Ray Gillen-vocals, Jake E. Lee-guitars, Greg Chaisson-bass and Jeff Martin-drums really put on a "High Wire" performance. Sheer adrenaline all the way!!! Cool.
Very fond memories of seeing this line-up at the old Cathouse (Rat Trap?) in Glasgow...standng in the queue awash with all the rumours of Ray having being replaced by a female singer, the relief of hearing Ray was going to play after all...that was a truly amazing gig! What a voice, a band, a great, great gig!
lol Jake dodged that guy as he was ripped up by security and didn't miss a note. That was awesome. Jake is an amazing guitar player, he definitely seems different from most players in the 80's. It kinda reminds me of Mark Tremonti in Alter Bridge.
- msw812- Jake E Lee was very focused on that, bcuz he knew what he was talking about !! ... and -humble682- no he wasnt leaving for a bluesband ... so gus g seems to me ,able to input pinchharmonics into songs as zw .. sigh!
I think that it was jake who wanted out of Ozzy's gig as he was more into doing blues based stuff but thats just what I heard from a guitar technician who once worked for Zakk. Too bad about Ray Giilan, as he was a most soulful vocalist and had great shows night after night. I was lucky enough to be teching a gig for a Canadian band who opend for Badlands in 1989 and watching Badlands was a treat for sure. Plus, they were all super classy guys who really only wanted to play music.
i got jake's latest album Retraced..it's awesome, but they're all copis of some famous hard rock songs..i miss Jake so much...haven't heard of him for a long time.
Ozzy said in an interveiw that him and Jake were like fire and ice, constantly argued and both did not enjoy working together. He did say that Jake was extremely focused with a hardcore work ethic and wasn't into the party mentality like Ozzy. Jake hated working with a high/drunken Oz so he bailed.
They kept it quite for years saying it was complications from something, i can't remember. I actually met these guys in saginaw MI. Got all their autographs. I still have the poster they signed it on.
AIDS uh. i didnt know that one. i heard it was throat cancer and it had ran through his family. wow. thats a new 1 on me. i'll have to do some more research on that one. thanks for the info Tony.
Jake found his niche in this band and with this style. So much better than his time with Ozzy IMO. Straight up rockin without showboating too much. Kick ASS!
this isn't Eric Singer... totally different drumming style... watch a recent KISS vid with Eric and you'll see what I mean, or search him... totally different.

Top ten rock Guitar Players past and present. (List is in no particular order.) 1. Jimi Hendrix 2. Jimmy Page 3. Joe Satriani 4. Rhandy Rhoads 5. Yngwie Malmsteen 6. Edward Van Halen 7. Steve Vai 8. Jason Becker 9. Jake E Lee 10. Nuno Bettencourt I may have missed a few excellent Guitarist such as a Steve Howe, Paul Gilbert etc. But this top 10 list is based on song writing and the players mass influence on music and guitar playing. Like a Hendrix or a Eddie who changed rock guitar.
