Benitez fell short of greatness? Really? Dont tell that to Cervantes, Villa, Petronelli, Curry, Shields, Palomino, Turner, Ranzany, Hope, Santos, Duran and Whittaker. Not to mention that he still holds the record for being the youngest world champion in boxing history at the tender age of 17. The best of all time? No. Theres no argument here. But saying he was short of greatness isn't accurate, to say the least. Pacman and mayweather arguably the best p4p fighters .....cont......
now they both aint got no more money spend it all, duran and benitez,i visited benitez in rico and he living on government assistance program aint that something.
Say anything about Duran, but he is as REAL as they come. He's not a sore loser , but hates to lose. He's just not the " buddy buddy" lets go have a beer type of guy.
@6400az Yeah Duran was never a post fight hugger, lol! Him and Hagler almost came to blows after their fight, and he cursed and spat at Leonard after their 1st fight, and that was after he WON!
He really was'nt a buddy buddy type. One really can't criticize an athlete ( boxer especially) for having the qualities that will make him succesful their chosen sport.
I was 19, and saw the 1st Leonard Duran fight on close circuit, Miami Beach Convention Center. There was a thick wave of electricity in the air, like if one was at the actual fight !!
Ohhh Benitez, he could have been up there with the four kings if only he worked harder. One of the very few fighters I've ever seen who could outfight an opponent while having his backs to the ropes. The youngest world champion of all time and didn't beat some tomato can to win that title. To this day it pains me that he never became as big as Hagler, Hearns, Leonard or Duran.
@2pacinseattle Yeah! He's really jacked up! Some say it is due to boxing but I've also read that his mental deterioration is hereditary as his brothers(?) also suffered similar problems. But I guess boxing didn't help or starting so early as a pro or his dad robbing him of his money. Poor dude! It's a real shame.
@ghns1133 Ain't that the truth! He was talented but lazy. I read somewhere that he only trained the last ten days for the fight against Leonard. Plus indiscipline hindered him from making 147 naturally so he was drained making the weight. Emanuel Steward once joked that he knew Tommy would beat Benitez because Wilfredo ACTUALLY trained for the fight. LOL.
............didn't accomplish what Benitez did before the age of 25.

Howard sucked, always did, biased ass. Duran was king, Benitez was talented but fell short of greatness.

@6400az I'm not criticizing Duran, I'm merely pointing out how he really was.
