Jan's message to the youth of every generation is to stay the hell away from the drugs and booze. She and I were the same age and came from the the gulf shore of Texas so she was me and I was her. I survived and she didn't. It was such a waste because she wanted to be beautiful and skinny. The diet pills we did were as bad if not worse than the recreational stuff she did and for what? Her talant should have carried her but she didn't believe in herself. I had a life and she is still dead.
"Down On Me" (the studio version, not this live version) was originally a B-side from the 1st unsuccessful 1967 Big Brother & the Holding Company album. After the massive success of the 2nd 1968 Big Brother & the Holding Company album, "Cheap Thrills," this live recording of "Down on Me' was released as a single to great success. It was recorded sometime in 1967 or 1968. It is my personal fvorite live version of Joplin in concert. She is at her best.

If it were possible to bring an artist back to life, it would have to be Janis! This world could use some of that real soul. No other artist poured out their feeling like she did. Her stuff was f**king real.
This pure raw unpasturized rock and roll, don't make it like this anymore. Todays music is homoginized, sanitized and so over packaged it's embarissing. My kids love hearing these songs when I play them.
I always loved this performance-it has a lot of life in it plus guitarist is good. I can't remember a rock guitarist playing octaves in this time period.
To freestyle actually does take a quick Witt and actual thought, but other than that... I agree hip hop shit today sucks. Just felt like putting my own egotistical comment online for all to see:)
@hermygagala i was trying to be sarcastic, which doesn't translate well in text. also i'm black, so yeah lol. but you are totally right about otis redding, he's a legend!
@aSadPanda11 I know man. Apparently he was highly influential to Dan McCafferty of Nazareth of who my favorite vocalist is. I love Otis too. Janis as well. I think Janis also influenced Dan but that I cannot confirm. The King of Soul is trully an aptly chosen name. By the way I am Danish (White). Not that the colour of a mans skin means anything. I just want you to know that there are a lot of none racist white folk out there too. Nice to meet you. I like your name on here too. South Park. LOL.
@hermygagala it's not big deal if you're white, bro. i hang out with anyone: black, white; boy, girl; gay, straight. it really dont matter to me as long as you're cool people. which you seem to be
@aSadPanda11 Haha awesome, you seem to be as well. We seem to share the same great values. As well as great taste in music. Have you checked out Nazareth at all?
This has more passion and soul than any of the "stars" today. No show biz bullshit like outlandish costumes and a bunch of distracting dancers. This music doesn't need bizarre distractions to keep you pumped.
manifiestaelalma, You deserve huge thanks. You've done splendid work here and Janis fans are grateful. In the same vein, gratitude to reggaegirl1982 and others for a veritable archive of the amazing Janis Joplin. Her youthfulness is stunning to recall...and the photos seem extra poignant to me. The power of her rendition all the more remarkable in light of the 23-27 year-old she was at the time. If ever there was an old soul, it was certainly Janis's.
ObeyVonZip: I agree. Nobody knows any of THEIR names. Meanwhile, Janis is a legend, and rightly so. You don't even have to say "Joplin," just "Janis," and everyone knows who she is. She put everything she had into her songs.
@daddybug101 I loved my S. Comfort and Janis but have to have just Janis now and no Comfort. She still sounds like the best to me even without it. LOL Have a great day!
If you need a Janis fix, check out LAYLA ZOE (pronounced Lay-la Zo) - "Canada's Darlin' of the Blues". She sounds like Janis and looks eerily similar to her. She's been called "Janis Reincarnated" by many big names in the business. She's huge in Canada and Europe! Search her on here, Facebook and Myspace. You won't regret it!
Sadly that is the music industry today :( All about fake smiles fake bodies and no true talent... There's hope though.. as I watch my teenage daughter and her friends 'Jam' together to everything from Janis to Pink Floyd and even music like Queensryche.. There's hope for the future ;)
At the end of the video there's a picture of Janis with her beloved dog George who was lost shortly before she died. Janis took him for a ride in her Porche and when she came outside from the store George was gone. She went on the local radio stations and begged whoever found him to return him but she never got him back. R.I.P Janis!
