Actually Karate-Do (空手道) means the path of empty hand while Karate (唐手) means "Chinese hand". The latter is the older name for said Japanese unarmed martial art.
It doesnt matter. The human race is meant to survive and so are the traditions. If I become a father I'll let my children become interested in the martial arts. Hmm...Perhaps tradition is pressured on japanese youth, eh?

Heh, no not karate - katori. The full name is something like "Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu". But the long name is such a hazzle to say :)
Karate does indeed mean "empty hand". This is a sword art, unrelated to karate.

this is traditional Japanese Jujitsu, not something one finds often outside of Japan, and very difficult to join even if you are Japanese...
