shinto ryu is karate type? cause i thought karate was translated : open hand they are doin somert ther more in the lines of jiu jitsu iaido or kendo? looks like it lol

Heh, no not karate - katori. The full name is something like "Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu". But the long name is such a hazzle to say :)

Karate does indeed mean "empty hand". This is a sword art, unrelated to karate.

Actually Karate-Do (空手道) means the path of empty hand while Karate (唐手) means "Chinese hand". The latter is the older name for said Japanese unarmed martial art.
