UNI (Original label for this, at least in the US...I have the album) should've released a double album. Not because Elton needed anymore push, but because this material is spot on awesome!
@EJinthe70s You're right. Any true fan know hows important EJ's rhythm section (Dee and Nigel) was to him. The sound was never the same after they left the first time. Dee was amazing.
It's amazing to hear these songs that were not included on the original LP. They probably had to be picky as to what they would cut on vinyl in those days because the process was very expensive at the time. Now in the age of digital recordings and the internet, we're able to hear these great songs (outtakes), which probably takes a great deal of power away from the artist from what they can release.
I SO agree that this is an amazing song from an amazing under-rated album: "Tumbleweed Connection." That record is so much a part of the tapestry of sound that makes up the soundtrack to my youth... LOVE it...
Been wanting to hear this live for a long time. Thanks for the post. My favorite track from my favorite Elton John album. Tumbleweed Connection is probably the most underrated album of all time.
LOVE it!!!! Nothing like the raw energy of the original trio with Dee & Nigel. This is an extremely difficult song to sing (including the harmonies), but their energy overcomes all the pitfalls. Would love to hear the band do this today, with today's technology. Even though Elton may not be able to hit all the high notes, he's learned to sing & arrange the songs so that others cover the high notes and the songs still sound true to their original intent. Again, thanks for posting this wags!
My father was head of WABC-FM and helped put this concert/broadcast together. I have a copy of the original broadcast. Elton starts off with just a piano and his voice. He's, in his words, "quaking with nerves," and it shows. His voice strains and cracks with fear during the first two numbers, "I Need You to Turn To" and "Your Song." But, once he gets Nigel and Dee on board, he scorches the Earth.
That's Dave Hermann you hear at the end of this. He was emcee for the broadcast.
I can understand why they were not included, but it is great to hear them. That live record is so amazing. The energy just jumps off it. Never get tired of hearing it.
well only 8 released on the record but more were performed during that evening. I've read that album sales here in the States were actually hurt badly by the bootleg version of this show that already contained all the tracks from the concert that came from the U.K. to U.S. fans. Anyway Its still a fine show and there's great energy in all the 1970 shows that i've listened to.
Oh Thank you so much for posting this incredible, amazing Elton's gem!!!!!!Elton forever!!!!!!

Never heard this version before. This is fantastic for a 3 piece. Elton had to work overtime on the piano. Raw power!

It's too bad the backing vocals were so rough. It would have been included on the 11-17-70 record for sure.
