  • Blown Turbo

  • filmed using a potato

  • Shoo doggy!

  • just about all SP units do that from what I've seen over the years.

  • Computer: "WARNING, FATAL ERROR. COUNTDOWN TO DESTRUCTION COMMENCING. START SMOKE-SPITTING SEQUENCE."

    Engineer: god fuck it RUN!!!!!!!!!

  • WTF BOOOOOOOOOOM! :-D

  • that train should be re-named as spitfire, because that is exactly what it does.

  • bunch of excited faggots

  • Who knew trains had afterburners.

  • Why, espee, Why?

  • the hell express is leaving the station

  • ...

Some people just don't know the diffrences between Steam and Deseil Locomotives... :\

  • So if it was weird

  • It was his turbocharger for sure

  • @railrdr523 LOL. Ashame more things couldn't be built and standardised like how EMD built it's locomotives.

  • @railrdr523 Very true, the price for a fairly used condition SD40-2 unit is $200,000 and up even though that most of them now are between 30 and 40 years old.

There are still quite a few shortlines and regionals still using the 567 powered GP-9's and SD-7's made in the 1950's, because there isn't really a suitable priceable replacement.

Therefore, EMD today, is still making parts for these ancient models they last produced 50+years back.

  • That was pretty cool. Just because it shoots fire out of the exhaust stack doesn't mean it's going to the scrap yard anytime soon.

  • When UP bought SP and got a look at their locomotives, they weren't happy.

  • "Hey Bobby! Can you turn the rail pressure up a bit?"

    "Sure, how's that?"

    BOOM!

"Um... back it off a bit."

  • To further illuminate others, note how the stack clears up immediately after the "flameout", which means all the soup that'd been boosted up to the muffler assembly burend out. These old 16 and 20Vs in SP's old tunnel motors and other SD40s-45s had a LOT of miles on them, with precious LITTLE maintenance, in SP's last days. What they were doing here was load banking this motor to do exactly what it did. It's a common maintenance procedure. This looks to be an M-K rebuild, as well.

  • This is usually from idling to long, dumping unburned fuel and oil into the turbocharger, and when you fire it up for real, it cleans itself out. Also plays havoc with the valves idling an engine like this. I went to Canada for a brand new one that did this, just let it sit there and idle and see what your get, you are also looking for an airbox fire in the process.

  • @erbie49 Amen to that. Any EMD (or Detroit) will get "soup" in the airbox from excessive idling, which, unfortunately, the RRs do so they don't have to depend on their sulfated/worn out battery strings. You can even get an airbox fire on a 6-71 if you sit it at low idle long enough, even with fresh injectors. Seen it happen! That's why GM Truck and Coach, for years, used to recommend always idling motorcoach 6-17s and 8V-71s on fast idle. The GM unit injectors are also notorious dribblers.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 You ever see the valves when the get "sucked" up into the head when idled too long. I never understood idling them like the railroads, or high speed low load operations. Whatever they saved on the batteries, they had to lose on the longevity of the engine, of course after 15,000 hours it belonged to the railroad, best of my memory that was the warranty on one.

  • This is usually from idling to long, dumping unburned fuel and oil into the turbocharger, and when you fire it up for real, it cleans itself out. Also plays havoc with the valves idling an engine like this.

  • 0:08 *Brup*

  • That's not a blown turbo....moron. That happens a LOT when load banking a really worn out diesel of ANY variety. It's called a "stack fire". Dumb foamer.

  • @DeserTBoB93535 Are you a diesel mechanic? I've been working on heavy truck fleets for 8 years and the only time I see an engine do what this engine did is after the turbo fails. The shaft bearings fail which dumps oil into the exhaust, hence all the smoke which leads to the fire from oil build-up in the pipe. I have never seen an engine have flames shooting out the exhaust just because.

  • I guess that wasn't made in America...

  • and the driver doesent give a crap and carryed on untill..................later on...............he blew up should have gave a shit

  • @harrier331 You assume that this has not been reported. The Maintenace Dept of ANY company ANYWHERE(including the place I work at)has a long, long list of things to do and are often well behind in repairing the MOST important items first.Everyone wants everything done NOW!

  • @gebass6 ogh so true

  • Poor old 645 prime mover just isn't up to the rigors of freight railroading anymore....

  • Thats fukin crazzy, fire just wooooooosshh.

  • DID IT BLOW UP.

  • @mccrackenphillip Not ususally, but scares the hell out of you when it happens and you are close. Canadians sent one back once, after road man said it was a bad turbocharger, went right back thru the turbo test stand without a hitch, I went to Canada to help them put the new turbo back on, the cost of putting the turbo on, labor, my hotel room flight there and back shipping the turbo there and back all because someone let it set there and idle itself to death.

  • are you sure is not a ALCO locomotive... LOL!

  • @chefjavier looked like an alco to me heh

  • ya i bet up dosent give a crap

  • Uber Clag!

  • This is what you get when you pimp your wheels on Pimp My Ride.

  • what does a load test do.

  • @lexmarks567 You load the system up just like it was running down the tracks except the electrical power generated instead of going to the traction motors goes into a grid and is disapated as heat.

  • That engine was showing off, just thinking in a Thomas style.

  • Next thing you know, it becomes a dragster or a faster locomotive

  • Amazing!!! I never seen something like that before...

  • Normal

  • Too much coal!

  • @JanitorMaster it's a diesel

  • @rallygsc Note that i haven't been serious.

  • Its a dragon

  • @jamin108 lol

  • the title could be used for a porn movie....

  • @HarveyHenkelmann That's why ALCO should still be around... (I know G.E. bought them)

  • yeah a little rich, EMD were around when my father worked for the railroad(ATSF now BNSF)

  • Price is not the issue. Railroads will make the bigger investment if it means better quality. They're not going to buy a bunch of absolute garbage just because it's cheaper. You've got it wrong...

The quality and reliability of EMD locomotives has been slipping over the past 15-20 years. When GM split from EMD, that was the beginning of the end. The SD80's and SD90's were not close to being reliable, and the newer ACe's and M-2's have major traction failures frequently....It's not something---

  • ----railroads want to put up with.

  • some of the older Conrail GE's were doing this just before the merger with CSX and NS I always heard the firedepartment being paged to meet Conrail trains at the crossings to put out fires.

  • типа полыхнула сажа в коллекторе и америкосы возбудились. ну народ...

  • there goes the engine lol

  • So far no GE wide NOSE safety cab locos have been retired and they came out 20 years ago, where as the EMD SD 90 and 9043 have been getting scrapped or taken out of service and they are far newer.

  • @mbsmike1 Troublesome 6000HP engine

  • @trainman2816 yep the H engine was a flop, but the SD9043MAC's have been retired and spun off to short lines with the 710 engine as well, I don't know the full story but UP still uses some 9043MAC's in slow unit train service and as unmanned DPU units, I guess they ride rougher than hell.

  • Time to scrap that old POS

  • that was cool

  • EMDs are great locomotives tho. They served the country for decades and they still run today. Well see how long GE wide cabs would last.

  • its nice to see someone show an EMD smoking, its not just GE. I have experienced way more EMDs dying on the road than GEs.

  • that was so cool

  • UP's the 4th of July maybe!

  • wow //lol 5*

  • nah its fine there just runnin a little rich.

  • @thunderstormX92

It sounds like your shooting off the BS alright. I find it difficult to believe that a GE can run naturally aspirated with the black smoke caused by a little bit of tubo lag; while accelerating a train; when working properly.

  • This is one of most awesome video I've ever seen , that turbocharger was bad damaged, very bad, but that is 'cause (I think) the poor maintenance and overhaul . Also EMD always used 2 stroke engines (exception 265H) and turbochargers or roots blower . A GE unit can run with the blown turbocharger because it can absorb air naturally unlike EMD's 2 stroke that can't and won't work(properly or not work at all). Anyway the 4 stroke is better than 2. Good job !

  • Really neat!!! Nice catch!!

  • Looks like they're running just a bit rich :)

  • @darkyoda diesels tend to run rich at low rpms

  • @darkyoda yeah, a bit turbine blade rich in the exhaust, i think

  • WOOW!!!! That was AWESOME!!!

  • OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH Thats Was Sweet!!!!!!

  • That's cool! Pretty sure anyone in the cab probably had a spontaneous bowel evacuation at the same time

  • I'm pretty sure they did that on purpose. Bad turbo by the looks of it.

  • Well. Not really. a GE ES44AC costs over 1.5 million. While an ACe costs 1.56 million, or something along those lines. There isn't that much of a price difference. The only reason there are more GE's out than EMD's is because Erie, PA has a larger facility to crank out more locomotives.

  • She was clearin' her throat is all. Lol.

  • sadly enough, and what many of us may not have figured, that was most likely enough to cause the UP to retire it.

  • alot EMD weebols here

  • I think this was caused by a build-up of oily substances in the exhaust manifolds and the engineer was required to apply some power to blow out the flames.

  • She could still make a good SD38-2 retrofit, if they decide to give up on repairing the turbo after this. lol.

  • Is the devil in there?

  • woah, thats some crazy shit

  • indeed man

  • damn that's something you don't see everyday

  • Look at how many EMD's are in storage on UP and BNSF vs. the GE's. Why? GE is more reliable, and easier to maintain. You don't see thousands of Dash 9 44CW's stored on BNSF, or C44AC's stored on UP...

  • but the GE engines look like shit compared to the EMD's. and anyways, the BNSF and UP have the two worst paint schemes i have ever scene. where'd the BNSF get that ugly orange they have??? and really, you gotta admit, an SD45 in warbonnet looks much better than a Trash-9 in UP or BNSF

  • I completely disagree but you have a right to your opinion. And btw, GE owns EMD now anyways.

  • I do agree that warbonnets look better than anything though.

  • oh whoops, lol. shows where ive been!!! but anyways, you gotta admit, a BNSF Dash 9 looks horrible compared to a kodachrome SD45 or a Santa Fe SuperFleet FP45. i mean come on, ya gotta agree with me there!!!

  • I love the Dash-9's. Although, the reason is probally because the only thing that runs near my house is the regional Providence & Worcester Railroad. They consist of a few GP38's, B39/40-8, and some ex-MLW stuff. So i love the dash-9s cuz i never see them as much as everyone else, so i'm sure they're sick of them cuz it's all they see. I just think the new GEVOS are beautiful. Unfortunately it seems the majority of people despise the new GEVOS. Oh well.

  • seriously, does a Dash 9 really look better than a red and silver warbonnet FP45??? or a kodachrome SD45? really, you gotta admit, the old SD series is much better looking than a dash 9!!!!

  • No. I already said that Warbonnets look amazing. I have no idea what the kodachrome thing you mentioned is. But i love warbonnets. I like the B40-8W/C40-8W's But I love the new(H3?) paint scheme.

  • the kodachrome paint scheme is that of the failed Southern Pacific-Santa Fe merger. and what railroad has the H3 paint scheme? and sorry about mentioning the warbonnet twice, i didnt get an email saying you'd said that

  • I had no idea that SP and ATSF ever tried to merge. That must be an interesting paint scheme! I believe(not entirely sure) that the H3 paint scheme is the new BNSF orange.

  • it was. much prettier than the BNSF paint scheme. and do you know where the frick the BNSF got orange out of the burlington northern and the santa fe???

  • Well, consider the alternative. BN Green + ATSF Red= Brown! And that would really suck!

  • where'd they get that ugly orange though???

  • I have no idea what ugly orange you're talking about. The new orange "bnsf" paint scheme looks great!

  • @rockguitarist946 probably all the way back from great northern...? that's really all I can figure

  • Yeah I definitely agree with you, the classic SD and GP locomotives look alot better than what either manufacturer is building now.

  • well, i think the UP heritage schemes look pretty good on the SD70ACe. and the norfolk southern paint scheme looks pretty good on a SD70M. but yeah, GE looks like crap. and there is no variation between models. with EMD, you can definitely tell, but until i trained my eyes, i could NOT tell the difference between a ES44DC and a Dash 9, except for the CSX paint scheme

  • Sd90MAC looks just like a GEVO ! Who's copying who ?

  • EMD was trying to copy GE because thats about the time this whole eco-friendly thing kicked in and global warming was an official scam

  • Well the GEVO engines are also more fuel efficient and comply with EPA tier 3 exhaust requirements. It's not a matter of wanting to save the Earth but newly manufactured railroad locos have to comply to certain standards set down by the government. And being 2% more fuel efficient is pretty crucial considering each railroad uses a couple BILLION gallons of fuel a year.

  • well look who's in the white house! a bunch of people who support global warming! and anyways, GE is cookie cutter brand. anyways, im getting out of this one. its getting annoying

  • How does that happen?

  • Cheaper to run, not cheaper to buy. The initial investment is irrelevant to most railroads given the lifespan of an average locomotive. They look at the projected cost of the equipment over it's entire life.

  • damn skippy^_^

  • that looks like a SD-40. Should have went to the shop for repairs. Most likely been ran the hell into the ground. I bet ya SP rebuilt that unit then forgot it.

  • MY LORDZ!

  • UP had several problems with the GE Dash 8s igniting fires in the tunnels of Oregon a few years ago, but sence they lined all of them with concrete spray foam, the problem has been resolved... Now its just problems with derailments haha!

  • Puffing like a steam locomotive..haha.

  • yep it failed the test that turbo blowen

  • mixture running a little rich?

  • And everyone says only GE's make fireworks shows :D GE and EMD are awesome locomotives

  • YEAH THEY ARE and im sick of people comparing and calling dash 9s trash 9s and stuff, because if dash 9 were trash they wouldnt have sold thousands of units.their both awesme rail companys.

  • Yeah same here. it is Called a DASH-9! not trash-9. They aren't "trash" so call them Dash-9 44CWs.

  • THANK YOU!!

  • i call them trash-9's cuz they look like trash

  • you obviously don't like American Trains

  • what?!?! dude, i love american trains, but i dont think the dash-9 looks as good as an SD-40 or a classic F-3!!!! EMD makes much better looking locomotives then GE can. i just hate the nose and fins on the dash 9, thats all. it looks really goofy in my opinion

  • I think the fins are the best part! Gives the locomotive some character.

  • the fins are ok(kinda). its the nose that ruins it. it just looks plain goofy!!!! but the BNSF paint scheme just started to look good too!!!! but why'd they go with great northern empire builder colors instead of something else????

  • Your talking to me like I work for BNSF. I have no idea where they got their paint scheme. No idea what the northern empire builder colors look like. And as to the nose, that is nothing new. Typical widecab design. You can't attribute that nose specifically to GE. Plenty of EMD have that nose for widecabs.

  • oh come on!!! everyone knows about the great norther railway's empire builder!!! and anyways, look this stuff up. and yes, i know a lot of EMD's have wide noses, but the GE ones look way goofier to me

  • I can assure you BNSF Railway Corporation doesn't give a flying fart what their locomotives look like, as long as they have a good longivety, and they can pull.

  • i know, thats why everything looks like crap nowadays

  • Rockguitarist946 - the BNSF Heritage I and II paint schemes were modeled after the Santa Fe "Warbonnet." The HII retains the "Cigar Band" logo, and some of the same striping and design. The HI retains the old Santa Fe "round" logo. As for the orange/green colors, I don't know why they use those...

Personally, I find the GE widecabs more attractive than the EMD widecabs. The rounded off noses on the EMD's look goofy to me. And as for the GE's outselling EMD, it's because of quality, not price...

  • @CSXno601 The orange and green colors.. I wonder if they use those because great northern used a lot of orange and green, as well as northern pacific using green, and Burlington Northern using a green color?

  • GE is building the better locomotives...All the railroads know it...That's why GEVO's are so popular, and why ACe's and M-2's aren't. They don't perform as well.

Now, I fully expect someone to bring up the turbo-charger problems that the GEVO's had last year. That issue has been corrected. As to date, that is the only real big problem that the GEVO's have had so far.

EMD's quality went downhill dramatically with the SD80's and 90's - when GM split from EMD. GE's the better builder...

  • I dont know man, they have some pretty good looking engines SOMETIMES. Its more like UP that says it.

  • @BNSF5608 any train could have a long longevity. i saw a special on an very very old dash 8 that just got refurbed. they chopped the train up and cleaned the engine. only to put it in another dash 8

  • @BNSF5608 They look better than UP's rust buckets.

  • @BNSF5608 if that were the case, they wouldn't be using colors and decals on their locomotives. They'd be as black as NS's are.

  • @BNSF5608 So why do they keep repainting everything?

  • just to ask whats the diff between emd and gen electric

  • Comment removed

  • EPA PHAIL x10

  • it probily failed the test

  • YIPES!! MAN that locomotive erupted like a volcano!!

  • Injector timing a little late maybe?

  • ah choooooooke!!!

  • hey i thought only planes could have afterburners?

  • ahhh ahhh ahhh chhhoooooooo

  • I guess this means it failed the California emissions requirements.

  • LOL very true!

  • EPA = PHAIL

  • al gore would be pretty pissed off lol

  • its manbearpig attacking a turbo

  • So was that a Pass or a Fail on that test?

  • Very engine start :)

  • That's amazing

  • ahhhhhhhh

  • Actually, GE's, older ones especially have a tendency to throw Turbo Filters more often. That EMD probably logged more than 150,000 miles before it actually did that.

  • I'm sorry, that isn't a steam powered locomotive, it is quite clearly a diesel.

  • Pity, where are the marshmallows?

  • bye bye mr turbo

  • Who says locomotives don't fart?

    (and sometimes light them)

  • i was loading an emd one time and it did that...i reset the racks and it never did it again

  • i always see fire on the SP units lol

  • GREAT!

  • What is that, a GP38, GP40? Maybe SD40(-2)?

  • GP38s arent turbocharged. They're supercharged. ITs prolly an SD40 or GP40.

  • I thought GP38-s were naturally aspirated?

  • most are supercharged.

  • Ah. Just for shit n' giggles it'd be funny to have a race between a turbo and a supercharged engine. You know, sorta like they race tuners on the streets. Completely impractical i know, but eh. It'd still be cool to watch.

  • they'd both prolly take off the same.

  • Maybe a hauling contest would be more appropriate. For example, a GP-38 vs. a GP-40. The reason I don't say SD-40 is because all the EMD lovers will jump on the "lets bash GE" boat. So a contest between jeeps is better.
