  • @quangluu96 No, it is not. A Bloomfield processor such as the Core i7-920 achieves over 50 GFLOPS in double precision in a real-world scenario. Cell, on the other hand, has a theoretical peak performance of just 20.8 GFLOPS in double precision, meaning the achieved performance in a real-world usage scenario would be lower than that.

    Besides, FLOPS performance is not all that matters. Bloomfield runs circles around Cell in MIPS performance (integer/boolean operations), for example.

  • @quangluu96 That is including the SPEs. In double precision, Cell's PPE achieves up to 6.4 GFLOPS, plus 1.8 GFLOPS from each SPE. On the PS3, where only six SPEs are available, that's just 17.2 GFLOPS. And again, that is the theoretical peak performance. Applications will achieve a varying percentage of that value depending on how well they are optimized, but never 100%.

    And what difference does it make how many PC games "maximize" this platform? Even ordinary multiplatform games can get more demanding and technically complex on PC than the very best console exclusives are on their respective platforms. By PC standards, Uncharted and Killzone are very lightweight games.

I'm been a graphics whore for ten years now and there is only two games that have edged out or compared to those two games. Crysis and BF3, THAT'S ALL! Now the developer for the Last Guardian has finally said the Ps3 will finally be maxed out. The PC is the bastard child of the industry at least for another ten years!

On top of that, in 2008 IBM released an improved version of that chip, PowerXCell 8i, which runs at the same 3.2 GHz but with many improvements for double-precision FLOPS performance (where the standard Cell processor is abysmal at). This new version is also available on their QS20 lineup.

  • @blueguy09 Nonsense. First, any circuitry that has electrons running through it produces heat, and the SPEs are no exception. Second, 40% faster than what? The PPE (PowerPC core) is no match for a Conroe/Wolfdale core from a Core 2 Duo processor. And the eight SPEs may offer higher peak single-precision FLOPS performance, but as specialized units they are abysmal on everything else. Core 2 Duo processors have more cores, more cache, newer instructions and a much more efficient microarchitecture.

  • @camargo2012 I own Battlefield 3, rented Crysis 2 and trust me I've seen plenty of Skyrim which is also the worst looking game of the ones you listed. It may be a fantastic video game but it's not THAT great looking due to the large environments. Have you seen some of the faces in that game? How people move? Also right now is not the time to be talking about it with all the issues it has been having.

SEE THE OFFICIAL SPECS.in total,the ps3 has 1.8 teraflop performance.it does 136 shader operations per cycle.RSX doesn't bottleneck.the ram is good.(xdr is a very powerful type of ram)and it's clocked at somewhere 3.7 or 1.3 ghz(i don't remember).modern pcs are better than consoles but it took em somewhere 2.5 years to become better and more advanced(GPUs i mean).ps3 has a lot of horsepower.just see the exclusives and you'll know what i mean.

  • @staticrubber First, RSX peaks at 400.4 GFLOPS according to the calculation (24*27+8*10)*550, but the consensual value around the web is 364 GFLOPS (don't ask me why).

    Second, Cell peaks at 179.2 GFLOPS, so PS3's peak performance is 543.2 GFLOPS (or 579.6 according to the calculation). The 2 TFLOPS figure is just ridiculous.

    Third, God of War 3 is rendered at 1280x720 and Gran Turismo 5 is rendered at either 1280x1080 (2x AA) or 1280x720 (4x AA). Neither are Full HD (1920x1080) titles.

  • @staticrubber I don't know what dubious website you're looking at, but NVIDIA's documentation about the G70/G71 chip makes it very clear that it has 24 pixel shaders that make up to 27 floating-point operations per cycle and 8 vertex shader that make up to 10 floating-point operations per cycle. That's (24*27+8*10)*550, which makes 400.4 GFLOPS. As for Xenos, it's 48 unified shaders that make up to 10 operations per cycle, so 48*10*500 = 240 GFLOPS.

    Also, on RAMBUS' documentation about about XDR DRAM, you can see that it is clocked at 400 MHz and tranfers 8 bits per cycle, which makes a data rate of 3.2 GT/s. It's 3.2 Gigatranfers per second, NOT 3.2 Gigahertz.. And it uses a dual channel (64-bit or 8 bytes) bus, so the bandwidth is 400*8*8 = 25.6 GB/s.

    Believe me, if you want information about RSX and XDR, there is no better place to get them than in the documentation from their own manufacturers.

  • @staticrubber What he was telling you is that Cell doesn't have graphics pipelines, and therefore no ROPs, no TMUs, and very poor rendering performance compared to a GPU. It has nothing to do with FLOPS performance.

    Also, there's no "clockage rate". It's just "clock", or "frequency". And FLOPS performance does depend on frequency, which is why it increases when you overclock a processor. Similarly, memory bandwidth is also dependent on frequency.

    Memory doesn't affect FLOPS performance at all.
