I swear on my life, and i wouldnt fucking write this to feel cool or better about myself, but my aunts husband is skip fryes son, ive met skip in person.
That was shaped when Skip was shaping behind Select surf shop in Pacific beach. probably 1978-1982.
The leash cup was put in later. He was shaping boards for very cheap then, mostly for friends. He was a little down on the times and didnt even have laminates, hence the handdrawn wings.
Best board I ever had was a 7'4" that Skip shaped for me in 1969. I went into the shaping room with him and he asked me what I wanted. He was so famous at the time that I could not think of anything to say at first. Wish I had kept it. Kirk
Skip has been well respected for that long. I was just two in 1969. The thing is, boards shaped by him from that era are usually pretty well thrashed, because they rode so well. I've got two in solid rideable condition, but the ones I see on CL, or ebay are just beyond repair. I consider myself fortunate to happen on this one, and a 7'2 pintail in even better condition for cheap.
I'd say from the mid to early 80's, the leash cup gives it away, Skip shaped for GandS during the early 70's and late 60's. Cool board, get out and ride it.
you probably right. One guy in San Diego wanted to trade his Takayama Double Ender for it, I was going to pull the trigger but then my friend, Mike Takayama, Donald's nephew, said don't do it, Skip is an awesome shaper.
