Good vid.............I was there as a British-born immigrant to SA. Border tours 1980, 1982 (x2) at Rundu, Opuwa, and Katima.......maybe now one wonders about the bigger picture, but at the time we were doing our duty, and doing it well.
that is kick ass soldiering.. as the British & Americans looked on and learnt how to do it.. shame on us for abandoning them ... they did heavy lifting for the west and we left them to do it alone - Britian and America shame on us
@kelvinb369 yes many of the remarkable capabilities that transported & protected SADF (and Rhodesian) troops in their bush fighting are now deployed in weapons and transporation capabilities by NATO troops in Iraq & Afghanistan..
I left South Africa a long time ago - was one of the lucky ones with the right to a British passport. I have never forgot my time in 55 squadron and defend the ideal to this day - not because I am naive. The story I heard is that the SADF mowed the cubans down and the losses were said to be like 200 to 1 and higher. Can someone attest to this fact or give some more accurate numbers? Or maybe highlight a book that I can read?
@fortunbas read 32 batalion by Piet Nortje and from fledgling to eagle by Brig-gen dick lord both books are about the border war and both are written by people who served in the SADF,you are right about the losses the cuban/SWAPO/FAPLA were emormous compared to the SADF Losses
@lordofbore I recalled SA had only 715 combat deaths or something like that, for a period of 23 years. but we lost even more because of our fucking mad training that at the end of the day saved our asses.
I served with the South African Defence Force during the SWA border war (1980-1982) and later on the Zimbabwe and Mozambique borders (1984-1990). Time may pass, but our memories never die. I believe that we never know kinship till we were brothers in arms. I salute everyone who has fought for freedom. Ons is wenners!
We will never forget untill the last of our genarations children Lays down there heads
The years where boys became Men with Pride and Hounor we served our country and God
Ons sal nooit vergeet tod dat die laste van ons se kinders se genaraasie hulle hoofde ne le
Dit was die Jaare wat seuns mans gewort het wat Trots en eure gehad het ,het ons, ons se Land en God Gedien ,
