So awe inspiring - what an amazing actress Ulanova was! For once Giselle is a real, living, breathing *girl* and not a ballerina dancing Giselle. It's ballet as a completely interpretative art rather than dance with some acting thrown in on the side. All those subtle, fluctuating nuances of emotion are so natural and never "busy" - love so much the moment where she does an involuntary skip of happiness as she goes to sit down on the bench and the mock serious way she rearranges her skirts!
Fadeyechev is so sexy, the Franco Corelli of classical ballet! They are simply perfect together. Her petit allegro is breathtaking, and yet she draws you in with a kind of fragile magnetism that is spellbinding. To the Bolshoi, technique is the messenger for the artist; the stronger your legs are the freer you are to express the character's emotions. Good point! What I love about this version is the simplicity in the staging. It is like Bellini's "La Sonnambula".
while Ulanova leave no one in doubt about her class its hardly fair to compare the modern day Giselles ..Bessmertnova {who was MY Giselle}...Cojucaru ...Zacharova etc to 'clowns and acrobats'. Its obviously what the audience wants to see these days...Bessmertova was a ballerina in the true sense of the word anyway , and you are hardly comparing apples with apples .Great clip this though - very enjoyable indeed.
Galina is one of my heroes and Fadeychev is pretty cool also, but were all the male costumes that unglamourous in those days? Sorry if that's ignorant; just asking.
I believe that considering ballet first and foremost as drama is one of the defining characteristics of Russian ballet (Опера без пения!) and is one of the principal factors that accounts for the widely held view that Russian ballet is at the very top of the world's balletic traditions.
Thanks a lot fot this videos... and yes once upon a time ballet was telling a story, made people cry, it moved with the expression and everything... ballet has evolved not for better in my opinion... it evolved in skills but not in art, like Plisetskaya says in an interview... and I think an executer is one thing and an artist is a different story
Once upon a time.....ballet was telling a story.Pleople left the theatres heartbreaking because poor Giselle and Albrecht. But that was a long time ago, we still have this videos...that is all, people says "ballet has evolved"(for better??)
Oh goodness - I see so much of my teen neice in her! Even though my neice wears levi's and boots she is so gosh darn stange around a boy she likes (even though she tries hard to be so cool) - at fourteen! This is the perfect portrayal of teen love and angst! Bravo!
Ms. Ulanova at her best, her Giselle is so inocent and so expressive, what a talented and gifted dancer, a true prima ballerina asoluta, She made history in the interpretation of this roll. What a joy to whatch this video, thank you very much for posting it.
私の心に深く焼きついたジゼルはウラノワの物よりほかにありません。このフイルムの時点で46才だったのですから驚異です

Why can't we get these sets and lighting in modern productions? All we get is a bland stage most of the time these days and maybe a painted backdrop.

The Goddess. Interestinlgy enough the ballet in Russia died as Mrs. Ulanova passed away. All what they have now are clowns and acrobats.

I love Ulanova the best in this role. Only she can float like she does.

So different from any other Giselle I ever saw! She was a real artist. It's a special role.
