Thanks to YouTube, I just discovered TVZ less than 2 months ago (and his late friend Blaze Foley, as well). I've since purchased 4 TVZ CD's and 2 of Blaze's. I've watched virtually everything of Townes' posted here. I must thank you for posting the "Private Concert" videos. I feel Townes' singing those 13 songs reflects his most heartfelt performances, his emotional peak. While the bell clarity of his youthful voice had vanished, so to, had the rushed delivery.
I miss Townes. I am so glad to see this amount of his work on line. Thank you for adding this. This is a lovely version. I love to hear him sing his own songs. Just a note: I was trying to tell someone about Townes years ago. I thought they would have known him. The person said, "Oh, you mean the opera singer?" I will always remember that. Don't know what Townes would have thought, but hope it wouldn't have offended him.
I remember when first hearing this back in 1980 something , I said then that it's the greatest love song ever written. Still reckon that I wasn't far wrong.
I love this song in its recorded version. Beautiful guitar melody, but my goodness Townes couldn't sing at all. That was painful. Great, great songwriter though.
@fatchuk812 Wow...that's a bit shallow, dont you think? I personally think this performance is his best one of the song. The recorded one seems flat and emotionless in comparison.
@fatchuk812 Townes could feel and make the rest of us feel, so I guess is doesn't matter whether he could sing or not. Personally, I think he's just the kind of singer I want to listen to!
@fatchuk812 who can sing the song any better than the one who wrote it? Townes' heart is where the lyrics and the SINGIN always came from...I would much rather listen to the songwirtiers than some painted up media darling lip synching somebody elses material...what an insult!
@beaverwithachainsaw I feel the exact way about songs. The songwriter almost always sings the song the best. The only the exceptions are when the songwriter didn't write it sincerely. When that happens someone else can sing it better, i.e, pop singers. But we all know townes sung his songs the best.
@midnightrebellion01 You can take the child from Tennesse, you can't take the Tennesee from the child. I have lived in Australia for 38 years, and my okie accent is like I never left home, and I truly love this song. The line he commented on Lowed Like a Cow, that is when a COW calls the bull, wants to mate, so he took her hand and showed her how, to a country boy that line is pure shakespeare, no one else would get it unless you knew a bit about cattle. He is for real.
I'm drawn in by the oh so many intimate videos of Townes by himself singing right to us. He was quoted as saynig his goal was "if he could touch one soul, perhaps save them...." I think fate is working hard to help him acompish that very thing.
What an amazing songwriter, being a recovering alcoholic I am truly amazed at this man's abilities to write and play. He is truly an awsome person, and I am glad to know of him and his story.
@Adirtybum Townes was an old friend, miss him dearly, whoever is responsible for this fine record of his work deserves cudos more than I can deliver. Thank you more than I can verbalize at the moment.
@everysinglenamesgone Well he did at least tell it twice without any contradictions in both this and the austin pickers interview. So maybe it's true. :P
@dogwaine Reminds of how Paul McCartney said he had dreamed the song "yesterday" and spent days asking folks what song it was and if they had ever heard it.
@dogwaine In another telling of this story, Townes mentions that all three of them --Guy Clarke, his wife and Townes--were sick with something like the Asian Flu and were consuming alot of cough syrup.
@4newdogs -ha,my parents came from india not paki, but I see that you think that the color of someones skin dictates their level of intelligence,,and u probably also think that even though i was born and raised in america,i shouldn't listen to american music because it's for white folks and im of indian descent.well,i respect ur opinion and have no reason to argue,so yes,im a dumb ugly asshole who shouldn't be allowed to listen to country, sorry for offending you so much.have a good day

"I'd swim the seas for to ease your pain."
He's got that down home country vernacular that is unique to genuine musicians from east Texas. Beautiful lyrics Mr. van Zandt.
