Helen Hayes, June Allyson, Betty Hutton and Eve Arden corroborated Christina's book Mommie Dearest, I read the book in the 80's and no child could make up the stuff she went through, I too had an abusive mother and totally related with the book. My mother wasn't an alcoholic, but I wished she was, because then there could have bee an excuse for the abuse. I read review on this book and there were a lot of inconsistencies in her book.

Really? I know abuse is bad, but come on, she was an adult long before she wrote the book, and she only wrote it after she died. If she was truly abused and didn't want to make up inheritance money she did not receive, than she would have written the book sooner.

Joan admited that she put her career above all else. However, she did many many things for those less fortunate-most of which were done with no publicity, fanfare or public recognition. I've always been confused by the comments that Joan was jealous of Christina...what would a true legend who had STARED in over 80 movies have to be jealous of? I, and many who actually knew them both, feel it was the other way around...that Christina was jealous of Joan's fame and tried all she could do to take the spot light off Joan. Helen Hayes, June Allyson, Betty Hutton and Eve Arden corroborated Christina's book Mommie Dearest, I read the book in the 80's and no child could make up the stuff she went through, I too had an abusive mother and totally related with the book. My mother wasn't an alcoholic, but I wished she was, because then there could have bee an excuse for the abuse. I read review on this book and there were a lot of inconsistencies in her book.

I'm not going to say Christina Crawford was a liar, but I would encourage those who are quick to call Joan a child abuser to bear in mind that if she did in fact suffer from some undiagnosed mental disorder, she too deserves sympathy. Because in her day there were no treatment options.

Bios get me . . . I didn't know Joan Crawford . . . I was NOT present during the upbringing of her children . . . I know for a fact of other bios of incidents that just DID NOT occur. Wish Christina would have written this book when Crawford WAS ALIVE, so Joan could have her say. Glad Bette Davis was able write her "answer" to her daughter's bio. One thing is for certain, Crawford was an incredible actress, one of the best around in her day, and THAT is the Joan Crawford I will remember.

As Christina, we grew up trying to get the aprooval of our mother, because you thing you're being abuse because you are a bad kid and it's your fault. How can you tell she is drunk? She isn't slurring her words. Also, I don't think Joan would really know Christina would "snitch" on her. And just because Joan was an actress doesn't mean she was acting, it is capable that her words and sentiments are sincere and that she just wanted Christina to make her entrance and help make phone calls. Have you ever considered that Christina was just a spoiled brat who wrote that book just to get the inheritance money she never got?

@outinsider Joan is drunk -any fool can see that----She was acting here---I don't believe she in sincere---She is trying to look good for the camera with her daughter by her side and at a telethon---spare me----I believe most of what Christina said---although there are a few things she may have exaggerated or lied---that is a possibility-I still think there was abuse-
even if a child was spoiled, it does not give a parent the right to abuse them -whether or not she got inheritance is irrelevant

Really? I know abuse is bad, but come on, she was an adult long before she wrote the book, and she only wrote it after she died. If she was truly abused and didn't want to make up inheritance money she did not receive, than she would have written the book sooner.

@kosmodog14 I believe she was bipolar which would explain alot. I feel it for Christina, but I also feel it for Joan because in her day, treatment options for bipolar disorder didn't exist. I <3 Joan regardless.

She does sound drunk. But Ms. Crawford was always ready to help with charity. Many great people had their vices to deal with in life. Joan Crawford contributed a great deal to the history of movies and to people in need.

+We may never know if Christina's story is true or false. However, it IS possible for one child to be singled out and be the target of a parent's abuse and rage. Joan Crawford was an actress. She obviously was an alcoholic. I still enjoy her movies. She had class and always looked incredible. She had glamour that I think a movie star should have. She was really remarkable and probably very sad inside.

"Mommie Dearest" was actually published TWICE. The second book was even MORE revealing. I only read the FIRST one, but the ONE scene that stands out (not incl. in the movie) was when she tied her to a shower head and left her there for hours with cold running water. The second one is when she forced Christina to wear the SAME clothes for WEEKS. **In retrospect, I must also add that the twins she also adopted (to whom she left her 'small' fortune) said NOTHING in Christiana's book TOOK PLACE!

This old tape proves one thing that Joan was not a monster. she didn't have to let Tina be a part of this charity but was trying to help her daughter with publicity Also I'd like to point out that Christina was over 18 easily and if her MOM was such a monster why be around her?Because Tina wanted to be Joan without the talent or beauty. And she was very jealous. Tina is so evil she wrote that book before Joan died and Joan knew about it. Tina waited until Joan died to publish her book. SHADY!

It's funny how people always say that Christina exagerated the truth about the abuse she suffered. I was abused as a child and compared to the abuse my sisters and I suffered, the movie is a fairy tale. I'm sure that's why abused children stay silent and grow up with lots of issues and fail in life. I'm sure that people who know my mother would never believe that she abused us. It hurts when people judge by what they see or think they know.

@Jessica8674 Your are so right. People don´t want to know, because they don´t care. Abusive parents normaly are good in covering up. They don´t show that side to other people just to those who depend on them and who can´t go away. If they would treat other people like they treat their children they would be alone. Why do they treat their children the most awful? I wish I knew, maybe it´s just because they can.
