As many times as I have watched this, from 1:37 on, I just start laughing that someone can play the piano this effortlessly. And the 1st 1:37 isn't bad either.
what?errol garner is the baddest that ever lived and of course he plays on pure emotion, cause he is self taught! One could only hope to have mastery of anything in there life errol definitly livicated his to playing the piano.thx 4 the great upload thats what u tube is really about these gemstones waiting to be found!
Bach and Beethoven are two of the most emotional composers who ever lived, and by that I mean their work has as an intense pathos that you can find in almost any of their compositions, regardless of whether it was in written in a major or minor key! It is shame that only the truly great performers are capable of drawing that out of their music. Garner surely deserves to be in that company.
It is incredible what a musician can do when they get the right combination of technique and more importantly feeling in their music. Erroll Garner is a case in point, virtuoso piano playing but just a wonderfully playful and joyful approach. You can almost hear the pleasure in his playing - as if it's a tangible thing. It's a shame that many musicians make the mistake of putting too much emphasis on technique, to the detriment of feeling. But then I suppose it's something you're born with.
@mintygreen This has been a mystery for me with musicians playing Bach, Beethoven and the like all their lives. I cannot sense the joy coming out of those years of mastering technique? I have been to Von Karajan, Menhuin, Richter, Oistrach and others, and would love to share what they might be feeling. . Maybe the lack of outward emotion is the fact that in the Conservatoires they are not allowed to tap their feet when play? Garner's cup just overflows with joy and pleasure.

Our Musical Heritage is vastly,Diminshing. Not so much in Jazz and Classics But in every other so called genre and its mainly because we have settled for mediocrity and call it great ,fantastic,,Its all been done better and realer and truer by the ones who preceeded the line.. And its too bad Jazz was so heralded and showcased ,appreciated elsewhere than here in the U.S early on.. Erroll is a Miracle .
In England I first heard EG on my tiny transistor radio way back in the early 1970's, in bed, late at night, radio under the pillow, on an American forces station, Voice of America. The programme was introduced by a Willis Connover (or something very like that!).
He used to play a half hour of jazz records, including EG and Glenn Miller, "music in the Miller mood" I think he called it.
Whatever happened to VOA and Willis Connover? Happy times from an era long gone.
@bradandfudge I listened to his deep voice in the 1950 , every night at midnight in Munich, probably ruined my sleep a bit, but had the alarm clock set, Voice of Amerka, Willi Cannover. I owe him alot in my musical education.
On the album notes from one of my favorite Garner albums it said they would just sit him down and start recording, that they almost never had to edit and that he almost never played anything the same way twice. He was the best there was. I loved his renditions of "I Surrender Dear" and "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To". I wore my vinyl album out. does anybody have those cuts to share??
"he almost never played anything the same way twice" - Sorry, he did play and record many tunes "the same way" more then once. Check his recordings of the same tunes over the years (like "Begin the beginue " (sp?) or "Play Piano Play") - almost note-by- note exact. - He was able to keep the whole elaborate arrangements of tunes in his head over the years. - I bet he worked those "perfect versions" during his countless gigs. What a great talant!
I did say 'almost never" because he would have a better idea sometimes and change it up. I play and there are things that I will play exactly the same and have for years thats habit, but every once in a while you get into a riff you like and take off in a new direction and thats what he would do!
by the way I said the album notes stated that he almost never played anything the same way twice" and I just looked at it to see if I had it right and that is what it says!
ERROL--ERROL--ERROL-- You're the greatest , Always a Stellar performance . I was fortunate enough to see him perform his magic in Chicago. He signed one of his albums for me .
I don't like to use the word magic with music, but Errol Garner music is more powerful than all the magic, it is not about technique ,speed or complexity, each note he played speaks to me. what a great musician.
Saw him live at Victoria Palace theatre London. Bought programme, but it just said "We don't know what Errol will play this evening - it depends how he feels" Lovely.
Erroll Garner is my most favourite pianist. There is still splendid!

Nice feeling on this tune. Blue and mellow. Lester (Prez) Young was another guy who played mostly by ear. Prez could read but not very well.
