Don't let that energy star label fool you. It is nothing but a conspiracy for appliance manufacturers to get your money. My grandma has a 1986 GE side by side that still works fine to this day. There is a video of it on my channel.

Dumb wench, the ozone layer isn't being depleted. Actually, the "hole" in the ozone layer was almost clozed up by the time the R-12 ban went into place. The ozone layer changes/goes through cycles, just like most everything else. Also, we still use freon, just a different formulation.

Older refrigerators are built way better than those so called "energy efficient" newer ones. Modern ones are too underpowered and don't last as long as the old ones and are also bad for your wallet.
