I must have replayed this song in the past couple days about 30 times. It was hot when I was around 12 yrs old and all we did in those days was to go to the playground. When time came for records to be played, we all danced and this was one of those songs. It was soo much fun being poor as hell and no one knew it.
212729h:i agree with you.i like to see many teenagers and others break away from today's junk pop music and listen to stuff like this.this kind do have dancing power and lyrics they can enjoy.today's pop is nothing but noise and questionable lyrics.this old stuff is a winner in my book.
I remember I was still in grade school - either 6th or 7th grade when Gary U.S. Bonds was popular. I remember my younger brother and I trying to teach our mother how to twist. It is a memory burned in the brains of all three of us. Mom even remembers. We were in the dining room and moved the table back to give us more room. She would only have been about 32 at the time, but she just did not have the required coordination I guess. Any way, it is a sweet moment in time to remember.
did you notice? everbody in the video appears to be happy, having fun, and careless. That's why I loved this era, as opposed to the present. I was 12 years old then, and I would give anything to live it again.
Wow! This song still sounds great. Thanks to Bob Walker and the guys at WTIX in New Orleans for playing some of the best music on the air waves when I was growing up. Thanks for the post...
I definitely remember "Quarter to Three." I was in 7th grade and they used to have dances in the summer for us "pre and young teens." They held them in the parking lot at school. I remember dancing to "Quarter to Three" and just having a blast. They never played this one, but I love it too, in fact, I may even like it a little better! Thanks for the post as I am enjoying this one!
Graduation from Sampson Elementary (Detroit, Mi) On my way to Chadsey High iin 1963. Man, learned to twist with LaDonna McClure and Alveda Cross (RIP Alveda)
I was a 9th grader in San Diego when this was a hit. I had the mumps and my pals dedicated this to me on local radio station, KCBQ. Great memories, thanks.
212729h You are absolutely right. After the teens check each other out to make sure it is 'cool' they will cut loose to great rock, any of it - by the way great posts here, haven't heard this song in so long
I remember this song when it actually came out due to the crazy lyrics and tune. Was all of 6. 54 now. Can't say I remmeber many others back then. Afternoon American Bandstand everyday after school.
First there was the twist, let's twist again, and then came the pepperment twist and the perolator twist. The dear lady twist...I love it, is perhaps the one thats most forgotten. Thanks to the youtube and the sender it's there for me and anyone else that wants to take the time to check it out. It's my favorite by gary who did have a bigger hit with 1/4 to 3 and school is out. The twistin' ghost & the spanish twist were also twisting around in 62/63 here in vancouver canada...remember?
About a year ago I was a DJ at a teen dance for 14-16 year olds. It was going nowhere and I just threw this song on to see what would happen and the place went nuts .The kids couldn't get enough of GUSB.I had to get my computer out and find all the rest of his songs !!!! Who says kids to-day don't know good dance music when they hear it ? Play it for them and they'll love it.
You got that right, 212729h. Great music is just that, great music. Kids today rarely hear this stuff, but when they do they always love it. Gary U.S. Bonds always sounded like he was having a party. I'm 59 years old and still love listening to it. Thank you for showing some kids that there is an alternative to the mostly garbage that they are subjected to these days.
Wow, what a kick song!!! Thank you John 1948Five for this gem! Looks like Elvis at the begining twisting away...Wonder what movie that's from? Again, thanks so much for this post! LOVE IT!
Bonds lied to me! No matter how much I do the twist, I still keep growing old!
