I believe people who think government health care aren't really thinking. socialized health care will lead to control by our government, they say that we will have choice etc, but it is simply not true. You put the premiums down so low the private insurances will not be able to compete, which means they will go out of business and more jobs will be lost and we will all have the same health care.
Not to mention the doctors PROBABLY wont want to work for free for the government which they will all be doing since socialized medicine will be paying the medical bills. And premiums so low will not reward anyone who aspires to be a doctor in the future.

Furthermore, public goods tend to be of a much higher quality if they are privatized rather than socialized. Let me give you a simple example. Public school lunches are provided by the state to feed to school children. Because it's provided by a state, therefore having no competition, there is no need for higher quality food. The government can hand out food that's very low in quality and consumers would have no way of stopping this. This is what happens when the government socializes a service.

Prices rose when government started regulating medicine, subsidizing, and restricted entry into the health care profession. Capital was now very expensive, and companies now having little competition, could rise their prices as they wished. More competition means lower prices and higher quality.
Furthermore, if communities did not pay for the poor, the market would again fix this problem. As I have already explained, prices would drop and the expensive drugs would now be cheap enough for the poor to buy. Universal health care is very different. Universal health care deprives the market of the competition it needs. Not only will drugs be of a lower quality, capital suppliers will raise their prices, and since its government owned, taxpayers will have to pay for the rising prices.
This will in turn hurt the people and the economy. People (even poor people) will have higher taxes and thus depriving them of money, and prosperous Americans will find themselves looking more like the poor they once helped care for. It's like public school lunches, there is no competition and it has to be provided to a mass amount of people, so the food quality is very low. It is the same with health care.

The reason we have middle-men is that you might have a 0.1% chance of needing a million dollar operation. That means out of 1000 people one will need 1m to spend on healthcare. If those people all pay $100, the one who needs treatment will get it and the others will have peace of mind that they'll be treated if it turns out to be them.
The trouble with the HMO system is that the HMOs can find ways to exclude people who are more likely to have those serious illnesses - if they can avoid covering that 0.1% who actually get sick, they can just keep the 1m dollars they've collected for themselves.
Then the sick person with no coverage either dies or goes on medicaid, and the taxpayer pays. So all the people who paid $100 for cover end up paying $200 - half to the government, and half to the HMO, who get money for nothing.

There is much suffering and it can be used at anytime as emotional appeal to raise taxes and create social programs. My grandparents had a very successful business. A Nice home and a condo.. and very good health insurance. Grandma got colon cancer. Although her insurance paid for some things.. it did not save them from losing everything. She died and now he is 87 and works 2 jobs just so that he can pay his rent. Actually if you don't have insurance and go to the hospital and they find cancer, they hook you up to disablilty insurance. I really hope everyone researches this issue. Unions only take money from these people - if you do the calculations, you find that most strikers never make back the money that they lost by going on strike. Therefore, unions exist only to be parasites on people who can't make it on their own. Employers pay these people money, unions only take it.

Our health care nonsystem, for those who don't have to worry about the cost, is very good. For everyone else, it's not; if you think it is, you suffer under a delusion approaching the level of a sickness that needs prompt care...payment for which would of course be denied in our current madness.

With a cheaper plan from the govt vs. private, the private choice will disappear. Since the government can continue to provide a service at unlimited losses (like the Post Office and Amtrak which lose billions of dollars) by simply taxing the people more, they can undercut private industries who do not have the right to COERCE you into giving them more money.
When private insurance is gone and you have only the govt to rely on you are at their mercy for your life and death decisions.

Furthermore, public goods tend to be of a much higher quality if they are privatized rather than socialized. Let me give you a simple example. Public school lunches are provided by the state to feed to school children. Because it's provided by a state, therefore having no competition, there is no need for higher quality food. The government can hand out food that's very low in quality and consumers would have no way of stopping this. This is what happens when the government socializes a service.

In a free society, if a business does not satisfy consumer demands, a competitor will try to satisfy these demands to attract customers. In a cannery of meat, if a customer doesn't like the meat, he will go to a competitor who has a higher quality meat (probably from cows who are healthier.) This will in turn cause the original company to convert to using these new cows.

The current economic crises has its roots in the Federal Reserve's interest rate policies, the continuing expansion of credit and economic stimulus packages over the years. As for health care, the conservatives are right. Many years ago health care was free to the poor because doctors saw it as their duty to help the poor, but because of overwhelming government regulation of health care (driving prices up) and increasing taxation on communities, such communities cannot afford to do so anymore.

I might ask why you think the doctors should be willing to pay for the treatment of the poor when you obviously aren't, but never mind. Here's my question: Modern medicine is very expensive, it requires large machines, drugs etc. Where will the doctors get the money to treat the poor for free?
Should they charge their other patients enough to cover everyone? In which case, how is this different from universal healthcare?

No, communities could afford to do so because costs of health care were so low. Prices rose when government started regulating medicine, subsidizing, and restricted entry into the health care profession. Capital was now very expensive, and companies now having little competition, could rise their prices as they wished. More competition means lower prices and higher quality.

As I have already explained, prices would drop and the expensive drugs would now be cheap enough for the poor to buy. Universal health care is very different. Universal health care deprives the market of the competition it needs. Not only will drugs be of a lower quality, capital suppliers will raise their prices, and since its government owned, taxpayers will have to pay for the rising prices.

This will in turn hurt the people and the economy. People (even poor people) will have higher taxes and thus depriving them of money, and prosperous Americans will find themselves looking more like the poor they once helped care for. It's like public school lunches, there is no competition and it has to be provided to a mass amount of people, so the food quality is very low. It is the same with health care.

The recent economic crisis (and current/future) was the result of government intervention, not only in the form of regulations, tariffs, subsidies, but also in the form of lesser known "monetary taxes" ie. The federals reserves inflation of the dollar, therefore creating a hidden tax. They created numerous bubble's and artificial booms that are now crashing down, because of socialism.

To me the only reason to resist changing the health system is that the government isn't throwing everything out and replacing it with the French system. A guy in Canada got into a BAD car accident and after extensive treatment all he had to pay were 15$, because he wanted a nicer cane. Same treatment in the US would have cost him 414,000$. He would have had to sell his house, his first born, his daughters and rob more banks than Dillinger to pay those bills.

Until you meet the deductable for your insurance you do pay the bill, plus your insurance premeium. And when it costs $400.00 for them to take some blood out of your arm. This is true. However it would also mean that nearly everyone who got cancer or another long-term serious illness would die.
The reason we have middle-men is that you might have a 0.1% chance of needing a million dollar operation. That means out of 1000 people one will need 1m to spend on healthcare. If those people all pay $100, the one who needs treatment will get it and the others will have peace of mind that they'll be treated if it turns out to be them.

The trouble with the HMO system is that the HMOs can find ways to exclude people who are more likely to have those serious illnesses - if they can avoid covering that 0.1% who actually get sick, they can just keep the 1m dollars they've collected for themselves.
Then the sick person with no coverage either dies or goes on medicaid, and the taxpayer pays. So all the people who paid $100 for cover end up paying $200 - half to the government, and half to the HMO, who get money for nothing.

There is much suffering and it can be used at anytime as emotional appeal to raise taxes and create social programs. Because there WILL ALWAYS be suffering it means the gov't always has something to rely on for propaganda. Gov't has a function but it's not to save everyone. Give us the chance to save ourselves by decreasing gov't size and power.

Compassion is a good reason to support universal health coverage, but since you don't believe in compassion let me give you another reason: Self-interest.
The UK NHS costs the same in taxes as medicare and medicaid combined. The numbers are right there in the budget, go and look.
Likewise, US prescription drugs are overpriced. I support universal healthcare because it's better for everyone, we *all* end up paying less and getting better care than with the US system of HMOs.

Compassion has nothing to do with reason. Compassion is a "feeling"; one reasons by using the mind and rationalism.
It isn't better for "everyone"; use of everyone is an absolute and I don't fall in that category. My "self interest" is just exactly that "self interest." That involves no one other than myself and immediate family. Never use phrases such as "we all"--that is another fallacy. Compassion is fine; stealing money for "collective" purposes is immoral; it's force.

Collecting taxes is the enforcement of a voluntary contract. You're obviously an anarcho-capitalist who doesn't believe in the social contract, which is fine, but pretty much everyone in the world disagrees with you on this point.

"Some" taxes are necessary; federal and local governments, police, emergency services, and the military. Our country is going in the wrong direction. The gov't is too big--at what point would you say "stop"? I think we cannot argue because you are set. I am not necessarily against healthcare--if they cut programs, reduced gov't size, etc. I'd be for it.

At some point we have to stop the massive tax and spend state. Look at the once great state California; it's in a sad shape. The word 'reason' has two meanings, both of which I mentioned in parentheses. You were responding to one (a basis) as though it were the other (rationality).
Cheaper, more effective healthcare is better for you, don't be silly.
If you believe in taxation for any reason then you have no right to argue that taxation is 'stealing'. It's sill to argue that the government should protect you from fire but are thieves if they protect you from cancer, for example.

I also don't think it makes sense to say 'we can't implement this good, necessary programme until we cut some other programs'. Each programme should be judged on its own merits, and yes I'm sure that I'd agree with you that some are not worthwhile and should be cut.
'Too big' or 'too small' government is a bit of an arbitrary distinction, and often a dishonest one - Republicans often talk about small government but spend as much as or more than Democrats. It's certainly a matter for debate.

My grandparents had a very successful business. A Nice home and a condo.. and very good health insurance. Grandma got colon cancer. Although her insurance paid for some things.. it did not save them from losing everything. She died and now he is 87 and works 2 jobs just so that he can pay his rent. Actually if you don't have insurance and go to the hospital and they find cancer, they hook you up to disablilty insurance. I really hope everyone researches this issue. The insurance companies are corrupt and they will find any excuse not to cover you. They will not send you a policy until AFTER you buy a policy. Don't believe, get a quote and ask..
