I've got the French Import of this song, if by French you mean Quebec, CANADA, where the song was recorded for Disques Direction Records in '77.
As for the group's name Kebekelektrik, when sylabolized, it comes from the two words KEBEK (Quebec) & Elektrik (Electric). When "Quebec" is said in French, it's pronounced Key-Beck - hence the name.
George Cucuzella, the ower of UNIDISC RECORDS in Quebec, Canada, is credited for this mix. Tony Green was France Joli's producer & both are Canadian.
Wow this is interesting. I have heard the the newer version of this. While it is interesting t0 hear what may be the original I like the newer version better. The one by space that I guess is mistakenly credited to Robert Miles.
I like Kebekelektrik's version of Magic Fly better than Space. This version has much more power and energy. It does not sound like a magic fly to me, I would say it sounds like a scream, warning, or SOS. Kind of troublesome.
This version is better has more edge and punch to the sounds, the Space version is too smooth. This is the version Bob Casey used to play. Kebekelektrik is a way cooler name as well :-)
Space were a french group, easily the "Quebec Electric" heard about this huge "tube" in Europe and decide to record it for North America... at that age was normal to cover songs from a part to another of the Atlantic... :-)
Sincerely, I still prefer the original one by space!
Classic disco... I'll tell you. I danced my ASS off to this back in the day at Studio One and Osko's in L.A. I have it on vinyl...... awesome song. 8-)
@emanboogie both versions were released the same year, but according to discogs: "Kebekelektrik's cover of Space's "Magic Fly" was rushed to market in North America before Space could release their own version there."
@emanboogie - the track was written by Didier Marouani (AKA Ecama) who formed the group Space and released this track. This is why I always thought that the Space version was the original, but perhaps not?

The 45 of this was released on the Miami (TK) distributed Clouds label in 1977. As far as I know the Space version came first.

That clicking noise reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode of a haunted Submarine beneath the sea that was overcome by strange noises on the exterior.
