Hollywood is full of morons: Example, I read something from Dan Simmons who was called by someone from Paramount to write a Star Trek story. They sent him all the "schematics" and "floor plans" and "rules" of the Star Trek universe. He spoke with an exec and pitched the idea of the enterprise exploring a binary system. The exec replied "what's a binary system?".
i saw the film before reading the books i gues so i mean when i read the books i sorta had my own imagnination but i think parts tended to favor the movie view since i saw it first etc
Considering the movie was made before the computer effects we are now use to, it is a masterpiece of film-making. The problem lies in the fact that everyone who has ever read the books both by Frank Herbert and now his son has their own ideas of what "Dune" should be. But this film has always been one of my favorties, no matter which cut it was.
@Johnlindsey289 I think his frustration was directed more at the studio than the actual film itself. Remember studios are notorious for thinking they can do it better than the director, the guy they supposedly hired for the job. It was just like the way the studio was constantly on Ridley Scotts back during the filming of Blade Runner. Only thing is they found out Ridley would tell them to fuck themselves and keep directing.
Face it, David Lynch is an excellent director but doing an attempt at an expensive hollywood blockbuster just isn't his thing, but when the film bombed and got bad reviews he decided to call it quits for Hollywood and go back to his comfort zone known as independent films with the excellent "Blue Velvet" which was a sleeper surprise, this film is enjoyable in it's extended cut but still the black sheep of the Lynch film family. Mr. Lynch does still hate the film.
And yes, I think Lynch bit off more than he could chew. I personally love the movie Dune. I can understand why it was a bomb at the box office. Still, it remains watchable and sometimes I cringe when I see the movie on a "top 10" list of box office turkeys or bombs, etc. Too easy for some smart ass writer to pull this off the shelf and throw it in with the likes of "Plan 9 from Outer Space"
The film is still considered Lynch's worst film (Even some Lynch fans think so) and he was way outside his comfort zone, he's not a guy to do hollywood films despite he did great with Elephant Man and do you think he had the right to disown this movie? i also don't think it's wise to make theaters use pamphlets to translate Herbert's terminology for the audience cause audiences go to movies to escape literacy and it pissed them off. It's still Lynch's redheaded stepchild.
As a life long Lynch fan almost every book/mag abt Lynch always goes back to this movie and how the studio kept intruding. 2 bad Lynch didn't have the clout 2 have "final cut". If Cameron or Lucas were to put all those millions into a movie like Dune or Simmon's epic Hyperion series: We'd have sci-fi that would inspire generations of peoples imaginations. Too bad the Hyperion series depicts a universe under the control of the catholic church. Too controversial, you know?
@EnzoFuturistic George Lucas doing Dune - oh god the humanity. Cameron or Scott, perhaps, but for the love of god, NOT Lucas. I'd really rather have Dune without Jar Jar Binks!
The Hyperion series is a true epic. But it's too "adult". It's mind bending sci-fi. The last two books DID get into some mushy romance territory. For example, the hero Raul meets up with a child (Aenea)who is destined to be the next messiah. They separate for years and when she's an adult they screw. Raul gets jealous of practically all the men. Even the love making is described and it's kinda creepy, complete with Raul playing with Aenea's breasts, etc. Ugh.
The second part is not the extention of "Take my hand" but "The propecy" by Bryan Eno inside the "Dune" soundtrack. The third part is "Prelude" from the same soundtrack.
@groofile Sure exist a couple of discs of the same soundtrack the second was out about 5 years ago and contains all the tracks included some never used in the movies.

BTW, a binary system refers to a double sun, among other things. Think of the sky on Tatooine in Star Wars.

Someone should do an "Avatar" music video set to this since that film is similar to Herbert's Dune novels
