Been a DP fan all my life, thought the MII lineup was there best. Also think this LP was amoung there best.I am under the reasoning that during the recording of this LP the band was in turmoil and had a hard time completeing this. But do beleive it was a very good LP start to finish and was much better than anything they did after it
@0XN0R Your right! In the DVD "Ian Gillan - Highway Star - A Journey In Rock" Ian tells that it's a love song from him to Ritchie, and you can see it, if you listen carefully to the lyrics, and he's right! Now I see it, and that made me love the song even more!!!
Should add the reason that DP went through so many personel changes was cause of Ritchie, this has been well documented. Rainbow too, though that was His band so he was entitled.
This song was written about Ritchie, when Ian says, I want to be inside of you..he meant inside his mind , so he could understand him...get your dirty mind out of the gutter !
@theyorkshirewhites spot on ! Ian could never understand Ritchie, he was such a narrow minded man, Could not carry on a conversation about anything in the world except music that he was a expert. Too bad he wore a wig even then lol
I think it's you who is narrow minded, what difference does it make if he wears a wig or not..even though it's not actually a wig it's a hair transplant..there is a difference.
All that concerns me is Ritchie's ability to make outstanding music, and that has never been in doubt !
@QueenReigns1 Sorry did not mean to trash the man in Black. Was actually a quote from Gillan not me, and he said a "wig" in the interview, did not make that clear. As You know there has been hatred between the two for many a year...
Creative combat was one of the trademarks of the band in the '72 -73 period.
Oh god that organ solo literally gives me chills every time.
In my head John Lord is a mad scientist when he does this frantic stuff. I imagine all his hair standing on end and the furniture spinning. It's great!
A very underated album, when i bought it around 30 years ago, i thought it was not very good at all. I believe Jon Lord once said it was a piece of shit. But when i listen now, the songs stand up. The only track i don't like is ''Our Lady" the last on the album, they should have replaced that with "Painted horse"...a great song. Still my favourite band.
For some reason all the reviews I read about this album say that it's poorly made. I personally think it's just as good and don't understand what's so "Bad" about it. This album and "Deep Purple in Rock" are my two favortes.
nah i don't mind. infact i think i prefer it when they're arseholes. However, my mother once made a black pudding so black...even the white bits were black.
Yeah man, fucking sweet tune. I love Blackmore but i know he was abit of a twat in his day. It doesnt take away the fact that he is one of the greatest guitarests ever.
Imagine what they would have done if Blackmore hadnt made Gillan and Glover quit with his massive ego.. ..SO FUCKIN SAD....THIS IS THE BEST THAT MARK II EVER DID
@ColonelFuckwadd bad reviews doesn't mean it's underrated, the reality is it was recorded during internal tensions between the band and and it got shit compared to machine head or the previous 3 albums for that matter. I'm pretty sure only a real purple can enjoy this album.
An amazing album, and right you wont find another band like this one with thier unique songs.Underated band .

I've seen a quote from Gillan where he said Ritchie was a giant amongst guitarists but an intellectual dwarf.

Best not to know too much about what songs are about or what your heroes are like. You can end up really being really disappointed.
This line up was DP at their best. Deep Purple in Rock ...what a classic. You silly man Ritchie!
