  • Boy oh boy what can I say about this demo without being rude to a wonderful karate master? Why in hell did he do this demo? It just adds weight to the total BS that karate was for defence against a Japanese katana. Facts are a katana (sword) in the hands of a complete novice will defeat a highly trained karate master 99.9% of the time. Katana in expert hands = karate is dead once in the striking zone.

  • Karate - Empty Hands, Do The way, and the only way is the Bushido!! Oss

  • the way he puts the katana back it doesn't look right...............but im not a professional so idk.

  • @moshe1000000 Before I answer, I want to comment on Akira... fucking AWESOME i love how he trys to defend himself with "a boxer's a karateka" awesome. ok so anyways, yes the sword got caught, it happens, the tip of the blade problably cut and got caught into the bamboo layer inside the saya. but oh well. the cuts themselves were impressive.

  • @Xiox047 The no to was terrible and he is very umpracticed.

  • @IEKUKATAKA

ya what a shame, better to dont show grap like this in public, after 3 days a beginner would do it better lol

  • my sensai was taught by kanazawa

  • I'm sad for sensei Kanazawa that he did this crap.

  • @neko2808 Why be sad if you sudy karate's history, hell just shotokans you'll understand that the sword is very important to it roots. Anko Asato was a master of Jigen ryu swordsmanship, hell modern kumite is basically kendo without shinai, so why be sad hell i think it helpful for all who study karate to study atleast alittle swordsman ship.

  • @toxi87 Because he amde the worst performance I've ever seen.

  • @neko2808 - Best comment on here. Kanazawa Sensei is a legend and has a done a great to deal to develop & spread karate around the world. However, when we get old we need close confidants to tell us 'enough is enough'.

  • bullshit

  • Absolutely horrible!!

    Karate legend yes.

But fucking hopeless with a sword ,i bet he was talked into this against his will

    its just total shit.

  • seems like he learnt a bit of swordsmanship to do the demo.......its definitely not genuine kunjustu

  • ummm..theres something called a GUN now.. martial arts / sword fighting has been useless for sometime now. Didn't the samurais get wiped out because of this? lmao

  • @blackbunnyhops You're simply an idiot.

  • i didnt knew there where katanas in karate

  • as far as kara-te = empty-hand I guess not ;)

  • @ZandarMaric

Just because you practice empty handed martial arts doesn't mean you can't practice swords as well.

  • @ZandarMaric karate and Iaido are complementary of each other, in the past samurais would fight with katanas however if disarmed they would become karate-kas empty handed fighters, is just now that they separated both arts.

  • @akira080483 actually if they got disarmed they'd have to use jujitsu instead, considering the armour they're wearing (that's why old jujitsu did not have so many striking techniques). Modern Karate (such as shotokan) was a later art developed in an era when heavy armour was no longer in fashion, and old karate did resemble jujitsu in many ways.

  • @Pecherin72 correction, jiu jitsu never had any striking techniques. You can now find "sport jiu jitsu" tournaments where striking is permitted while standing, but even then the striking has nothing to do with jiu jitsu; the striking is simply borrowed from other disciplines. I love jits.

  • @akira080483 Karate isn't even Japanese it is Okinawan it's nothing to do with samurai it was a peasant art of self defence.

  • @okuiai so then karate is not even from Okinawa! hence it comes from Kung Fu! and Kung fu is not Chinese because it comes originally from India from the zen monks (Mahayana Buddhism) Come on guys! stop trying to argue about something you are not even sure! karate means empty handed even if using jujitsu was still empty handed!! a Boxer is still a karate-ka!!!!

  • @akira080483 Funny that people should have a problem with this. The first thing Funakoshi says in The Essence of Karate is that karate developed from the practice of a man from India (Boddhidharma).

  • @akira080483 a boxer is a boker. a thug/streetfighter is a thug/streetfighter. a karateka is an individual that STUDIES the japanese eastern martial art of Karate.

  • @akira080483

The karate was not being invented in samurai era. so how could you say the samurai could doing a karate if they were being disarmed?

  • @akira080483 - Er no! This is the sort of BS that gives karate a bad name. Name one samurai that knew karate. They may well have know similar systems of unarmed combat but karate wasn't around then.

  • This is a great display the display for the 10th worldchampionships didn't even feature kanazawa sensei or his sons

  • why is a shotokan/goju-ryu karateka using a sword? did he actually learn iaido?

  • Kanazawa sensei has a black belt in aikido, iaido, and white crane along side his Shotokan Karate.

  • n he's demonstrating at a karate meet because....?

  • is it true that kanazawa sensei has a black belt in aikido and iaido?

im not doubting what you have said im just curious.

  • I train under this man. He teaches at Sui Shin Kai karate club. He is a cool guy.

  • with those gay moves he can cut your ass into pieces :)

  • Comment removed

  • Excuse this user (acerwk) he was beat up by a purple belt in shotokan after he said things to him, hes very upset so he must spam shotokan video's ! poor greek kid...

  • master kanazawa would kill u using jst his legs after all in 1957 he did win the all time first japanesse competition with a broken hand

  • looks like he has big trouble with his noto at 0:53 :s?

  • i've had a lesson from Kancho H.Kanazawa and his son yesterday (they gave a training in Brussels) and I have to say: They are cool!!

He's very friendly and smiles but he still can do his karatetechniques.

  • Yes, Extremely approachable! hes so humbled also, iv never been thanked so much in my life when i gave him a gift of wine ( he Loves wine...)

  • No good!

  • Ignorancia pura...

  • karate does mean empty hand. actually weapons were supposed to be in the shotokan sylabus but many dojs don't teach it or teach very little of it for some reason... my sensei teaches us nunchucks, but i had to take it upon myself to learn bo staff, shurikuns and wazikashi

  • At my dojo my sensei actually trained in sai when he did judo before he did shotokan but he teaches sai, and he is a hachi dan hanshi respectively.

  • wow ,i guess u havent learned yet cause u cant even spell the names right , its shuriken and wakizashi

  • All types of Karate uses weapons. If not,why do the Samurais even bother to learn it?

  • most samurai didnt practice karate, it was mostly practiced by peasant farmers, and it was invented in okinawa japan a place where swords were banned for centuries

  • is this shotokan karate?? i thought shotokan didnt involve any weapons..

  • Alot of the shotokan movements is used to defend yourself. Also from an oppenent with weapons.

  • I think the word karate itself means empty handed, but most "Americanized" styles of karate incorporate traditional japanese weapon styles.

  • Karate Means Open hand I believe

  • I tht "karate"'s "kara" (means empty) came from Japanese mentality of "empty mind".

Shotokan basically doesn't use weapons, but sometimes do, I guess.

Especially, for Kanazawa sensei, he's known to master many martial arts besides his great karate.

  • oh ok thanks for correcting my error ^-^

  • you guys are stupid , karete-do means way of the empty hand.

  • They do learn to defend against, just depends on teacher if he learns his students to use weapons or not.

  • there r very few schools which do its mainly the older schools which do. but many weapons were used by peasents, like the bo staff which is jst a stick, sai daggers made for digging so they could plant seeds, tonfa's for beatin the flower, n kama's for farming

  • Thanks for posting this - I was too busy competing myself, I could not see his demo in my eyes. But could you please remove this music behind? I rather listen to his kiai and the real sound of the venue -it really does not go with the demo. Natsuko
