  • The nicest thing about the Dell x90 series (390, 790, 990) is that they use a standard mATX motherboard instead of the unusual, obsolete, hard to upgrade, BTX motherboards. Even the back face place can be removed and replaced without dremeling it on the x90 series. The older Optiplex models have much better airflow and slightly quieter, but you'll find out after four years--as expandable as Dell claims them to be--they'll turn into door stops.

  • @joey23125 It did seem like a shame to have to trash a nice case end of life.

  • A comment on Pro Support, I made the comment talk to Bob in TX vs. Raj in India. Nothing wrong with Optiplex India support, sometimes I cant understand them but thats me. Also the Pro Support people make absolutly sure they help as fast as possible. Not so with standard support.

No use crying about standard support just pay for pro.

One exception, if you are a pro and know how to get what you want with standard support so be it. :)

  • i'm after a new workstation and cant decide whether to go lenovo or dell

does it have software that automatically updates the machine (drivers, software, maintenance) etc. similar to the lenovo software?

does it come with recovery media to get it up and running again?

can i insert a different video card into the machine and will it be compatible with dells auto maintenance software (if applicable)?

how reliable are the machines compared to say the lenovo desktops/workstations?

    thanks,

  • @Gumblert Sorry for late reply, Not used to this short reply format so I'll be brief.

    4. I have no Lenovo DT/WS exp. But the 990 is solid. I have 3 with 0 issues w/fast performance. Low energy consumption is a plus. C 2nd reply.

  • It does look great. i love the tool-free case design and it's pretty simple to upgrade the CPU, ram and add a better graphics card if you need too. mine gets a bit noisy. i got mine very cheap online 400 aud

  • i've got the tower version which funny enough is actually a low profile design!

what are the specs on it? Did it come with USB 3.0 as standard?

  • @DannyV1991 Hi Danny! To answer your question the USB 3.0 was an "optional" pci-e card you had to pay extra for ($30.00?)

optional Parallel/2nd Serial PCIe card (MT), optional 2nd Serial PCIe card (DT & SFF), optional 1394a PCI card (MT & DT); optional USB 3.0 PCIe card

Great machine, Great look, Great Engineer and Support(Pro Support people, buy Pro unless you are a pro)
