  • @1983parrothead a kirby rip-off. the powers thing looks like a lot of fun, and im sure i would enjoy it. but i just so happen to be addicted to japan AND gameboys. i like ds too, but i think i wanna try his first game first. and ur probably gunna say, "oh go try it on virtual boy" (haha i mean visual boy :P im never gunna play virtual boy, it sucks :P) but i like cuddling up underneath my covers with my gameboy better than sitting on a table and making my eyes go crappy on a computer.

  • @1983parrothead i like both sonic and mario. im sure i would like starfy too, and i already love kirby. i never even said kirby was better. im just saying that when i first saw this commercial in 2009, i thought he was a kirby rip-off. this is america's first impression of starfy. if we had been introduced to the older games first, then i would have known all about starfy, loved his games, and realized there was a new innovation in the series. but,of course, i lived i america, so it looked like

  • I REMEMBER THIS COMMERCIAL!!!!! but i thought it was a kirby rip off so i didnt get it. im just gunna get the ones for gba.

  • @Hmmfomtgal That's like saying Donkey Kong Country ripped off Super Mario Bros. without knowing the concept was created by the same company in association with another.

  • @1983parrothead no it's not. the commercial made it look like a weak kirby clone. when i saw this commercial, i had no idea who he was, but since he was the same starfy but in a different form, i assumed that he was a kirby rip-off. now that i know all about his games, i know that he's not a kirby rip-off and the developers were trying something new. if u look at starfy's past games, you'll see that he doesnt transform in any of them. i might get this game, but the older ones look a tad better.

  • starfy is the coolest

  • CUTE!! :D

  • @ColinPetal I agree. This game is way better then the kirby and mario games I have. And I also think it's cute even though I'm a boy and I'm 12.

  • Desu no stafy

  • Yep... I seen this commercial when I saw up in 3D

  • Chuck norris...meet STARFY!

  • kirby knockoff

  • @metakight4

have u even played the game, no u haven't and yet ur calling it a knockoff

  • @TottokoHamtaro10 i actually did play this shit head and it's a kirby knockoff =l

  • @metakight4 ...they play nothing alike.

  • @metakight4 Starfy isn't a Kirby knockoff and a Kirby ripoff!

  • Any chance of seeing starfy in the next gen Smash bros? If so don't disappoint me by doing to him what you did to poor shadow.

  • weird can you really use monstar on big sqiuddy? cause i dont remember that?

  • I know, huh?

  • Wow I loved this game XD its too bad i got 100% and beat master lobber : (

  • This made me lol.

  • My little brother got this 2 days ago, I beat it for him yesterday XD! Very short game

  • Indeed it is. I never get tired of it though. x3

  • Starfy is now one of my favorite Nintendo Maskots, I like him way better than Kirby. he's bad ass ;p

  • i love big squiddy.

  • Okay, so people are complaining that this isn't "CUTE" enough... wtf, it's super cute! I think this is better then the Japanese ones, Monstar is so cute here!! Sure it might not be crazy, but I don't think it would appeal to a large audience if it was goofy (in the US) like it would in Japan. (and if it was dubbed you'd complain about the voices...) Also, you people act like Starfy never gets mad. He gets a mad look when in Monstar form, it's appropriate. 6.6

  • Cambells commercial!! XD!!

  • Comment removed

  • me too the game play looks very similar

  • The game play is similar, yet, completely different. Great game, lots of extra things to do!

  • I like the other one better, it seems more mysterious and you wonder what his face looks like

  • I WILL DEFINENTLY GET THIS!!!!!

  • Monstar stafy saves the guy from the squid! yay!

  • Oh, gawd, they're giving Starfy Angry Kirby Syndrome, too? -.-'

  • Not really...

  • Starfy is a asshole, provoking the squid and then leaving the fisher to his doom.

  • No no, it's an evil squid. Starfy then zipped over to the nearby shore to get his dragon transformation to fight the squid :D

The fisher was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, like a guy with a fruit-cart wandering on an F-Zero race track.

  • I think it's funnier to think of it as the former. XD

  • Know that its bad but from the prespective of a friend of mine, it seems like Starfy's a jerk. =p

  • True, that does make him more fun...

Watch Starfy rile the beasts of the deep then leave the hapless citizens to fend for themselves in, Legendary Jerk Starfy...

But naaah, when you play his games, Starfy's too adorably naive and innocent to be a jerk...

  • I was a bit sad when I never saw this commercial in MY theater...

BTW, I live in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada.

  • why does the octopus look like blooper from mario?? the rezamblince is to greeat

  • It's just a coincidence. The Blooper from the Mario series nor even Squishy from the Kirby series never did pop up in my mind when I saw this squid.

  • well if you ask me its alot like blooper

  • Blooper's don't have any very long tentacles, unless you count that one from the Ricco Harbor in Super Mario Sunshine.

  • The first time I saw the first commercial, with the old man and the kid in the boat, I think I nerdgasmed halfway to the stars. It's effin' Stafy! ...er, Starfy.

  • Heh.

It's kind of amusing that Stafy's getting the same "MAKE HIM MANLIER!" treatment that Kirby gets.

I.E., Japanese commercial = Super Cute Happy Fun, American commercial = Apocalypse fighting giant monsters fire breathing epic music...

    Also, America = Angry Eyes!

  • Now the angry eyes of him seen near the end of this commercial is actually based on a specific official artwork made by Nintendo of Japan, but not Nintendo of America.

  • Ay, I've seen that piece of artwork. Don't forget, I've been importing the Stafy games too ;)

It's just amusing to compare the commercials. The Japanese ones are ultra-cute and happy, while the American ones thus far are end-of-the-world battles...

Ironically the two together fairly well mirror Stafy's own game arcs, where they start off cute and happy, and usually end with some huge apocalyptic-style battle....

  • Sound's like you are pushing it. Kirby looked happy in the Kirby Canvas Curse commercial, but the front cover for the game advertised in it shows him angry. Kirby also smiled a few times in some North American commercials (Amazing Mirror's doesn't count, because it was its Japanese commercial).

  • Not really, try searching YouTube for American vs Japanese Kirby.

Oooh, and it seems another recent poster agreed with me, aware of Angry Kirby Syndrome.

  • Watch The Karate Kid Part III, and compare how John Kreese and Mike Barnes train their students to how Mr. Kesuke Miyagi trains Daniel LaRusso.

  • No thanks :P

Just saying, American ads try to portray them in a different light.

The best example is Kirby and his animal pals. Japanese commercial: Cute animals are coming to play! American commercials: Kirby and his evil animal gang are murdering bikers.

    It's just amusing is all.

Although recently NoA seems to have gotten out of that mindset with more 'cute' Kirby ads.

  • Miyagi uses yoga, while John and Mike use rage.

  • Ay. But I really wouldn't use Karate Kid movies as any kind of decent comparison, even if it does fit....

  • I'm talking about how two different regions do things. And here's another interesting thing: compare cartoon shows and reality movies to the Japanese video games they are based on. Americans aren't very good at translating most video games into cartoon shows and reality movies, but Japan is.

  • True, a lot of Japanese live-action adaptations are much more on-spot than American ones...

Casshern... Yatterman... Cromartie High... Cutie Honey...

I just wonder these days, is that how we really are, or how advertisers and marketing people assume we are?

I mean, I'm American and I don't go out fighting bikers and biting wood beams in half. Except on Saturdays, but them's my special times.

  • Americans are zany and like to say things like "KOMBAT TIME!", while the Japanese are very good storywriters for video games. Compare the Japanese video games to American video games. Americans want to be funny, while the Japanese want to be creative.

  • True... although American company 5th Cell is really shining in the Creative department with things like Drawn to Life, Lock's Quest, and Scribblenauts (which if you haven't heard of yet I urge you to check out).

Hrm... Silicon Knights is Canadian, right? I really admired their writing in Eternal Darkness...

Although it is a bit of a stereotype, not all Americans at KOMBAT TEIM :P I know many who are just as intrigued by clever concepts... it's just that the other group is... louder.

  • I got the "KOMBAT TIME!" quote from Sonya Blade in the Mortal Kombat cartoon. America's like "lol, let's have fun!", while Japanese wants to be serious. Also, compare how Japan doesn't care if they use whatever song they use in whatever they want to hear it in, to how America doesn't want one person to use a song in whatever type of media without asking the song's respective owner's permission.

  • I actually love how this commercial is like, since he is supposed to be a legend and all. Of course, I was wishing they were animated like the Japanese ones, but beggars can't be choosers.

  • Oh, don't get me wrong, I like it too!

It's actually appropriate, as I've found under the Starfy's cute surface, there's usually quite an epic series of battles to be had...

...I'll say nothing about the Secret final boss of this game... But he's... hard. x-x

  • The final boss was very easy, in my opinion at least.

  • Not the boss in the castle... the one later, after the secret time attack type stages...

He's pretty darn hard, you have to admit... and flashy!

  • oh

    I haven't bothered with those yet :x

  • Aaaah...

Complete each of them under a specific time, and you'll unlock the special extra boss who is pretty dang hard...

  • @AlgusUnderdunk It's not so much "make it seem manlier" marketing as it is "don't judge it just because it's cute" marketing

  • I didn't see the Starfy commercial before the Disney Pixar movie "UP!" came on. I wonder why?

  • Well, I mean I went to see if it appears before "UP!" starts, but I think it came on during those trivia and quizzes seen before the previews of some upcoming movies and commercials about the theater you watch it in.

  • Cool. I'm glad to see a little bit of the CGI Starfy. He looks cute in the dragon costume.

  • Very nice, far better than the first commercial.

"Legendary Starfy commercial will run before Pixar's UP movie in theaters. "

Really, now? I gotta hand it to Nintendo... I didn't think they were going to push the game like this, but I'm glad they are.

  • Ok, this commercial is WAY better than the other one!

  • I'm gonna be seeing UP tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing this commercial ON THE BIG SCREEN.
