my favourite of the four this one. been playing it for three days solid. made my fingers raw...love the tuning - didn;t know my bass string could manage to get up to G...but now it stays there
The continent of Africa continues to amaze me, many times. Although the western people many times tried to demonize it and make it of less value. However Africa seems to be mysteriously rich in culture, just listen to their traditional music so soulfull. Nevertheless it's up to Africans to make their cultures/civilizations known to the world which were so tainted by those racists demagogue for so long . Africa Arise, remember God loves you so much! It's time for you to rise, unite fellow humans.
great music, man...it´s time we all can know the music and art from the beautiful Africa, we are tired of the old and boring "made in USA" stuff...there are so many interesting things and so many different musics all around the world...five stars for you!
@EduardoAllo I listen to music from all over the world and all different genres, just because there is good music all over the world doesn't mean music made in America is "old and boring." Quit being like Mac users and Indie rockers and lose the superiority complex. Great music is great music, doesn't matter if it is from America or not.
@ratmfthagov15 If great music is great music, doesn´t matter if it is from anywhere, even doesn´t matter wich style, included "indie rockers" and Mac users, my friend. Of course the meaning of my coment is not "if you are american, you are a bad musician", that would be stupid. "Made in USA" stuff is not "american musicians" art, actually many of my fav musicians are from there. The superiority complex is in the "made in USA" stuff, really
BTW So wat if he hates rap.... just because he might not like rap, that doesnt mean he like your caucasian-satanistic RocknRoll metalic music.. so stop chatting bullocks.. and by the way, rip to the Greatest Blues man of all time in the world aka Ali Farka Toure..... Blesssss
Thank you for yr gracious explanation iArsalan. Please excuse my ignorant comments. I get things wrong all the time, however it's the only way to learn new stuff. Ali Farka is genuinely a prodigy and the flower which blooms in adversity is always the most beautiful and remarkable.
Really it refers to Farka Senior and Farka Junior. Both with the same name can be confusing, so I guess the vieux is actually a reference to the elder Farka.
Hi Chorlton, This use of 'vieux' has to do with an English play on words based on the similarity of sound between 'Farka' and 'fucker'. If u call someone 'an old fucker' it is generally said in jest and good humour. Consequently 'vieux farka' - an 'old fucker'. I hope this does not confuse u more. English can be very puzzling sometimes. I hope no one takes offence at me explaining this 'pun', as we all respect Ali Farka Toures undying genius. He took blues back home again, u might say.
Add to that the word "Vieux" for old and you get "Old Mule".
Songrai names often refer to totem animals, either of family, caste, or the individual.
In Ali's case, he was the only child out of 10 to survive birth and childhood. Furthermore, his childhood was filled with hard labor and he built his first girkel/guitar from junk despite being from a Nobel family which forbade him from playing music. Because of his endurance and stubbornness he was named Farka.
This is probably his Dad's old Yamaha. And yes, Ali's music was more meditative but consider the age difference. Betcha his son mellows out like the Old Man?
Absolutely stunning - he really is his father's son! - All he has to do now, is to make his next album sound less like his father's work and he will be fine!
He always capos on the 3rd fret - in all the times I've seen him.
Here, his 5th string is tuned down to G,
an 8va below the 3rd string. His 6th string is either left on E, or tuned up to G, doubling the 5th string, can't tell. But the upper 4 strings are definitely still in standard.
He only plays w/ his index finger w/ a few thunbs thrown in.
Just imagine how mad I am that I was unable to go see him when he played in a small theatre in Maine at the same time as I was visiting with my family.
What he does is he makes the guitar sound like the kora. Not sure how he tunes it, but glad I wound up in this page... He is happy to play and the music conveys the mirth and warmth of the player. This guy should be recorded.
He's actually playing the Guitar like the Ngoni or Xalam. Ali's and Vieux's playing style is based on the Songhai tradition which is a different culture and empire than Mali/Senegambia. The Ngoni/Xalam and Kora were the ancient tools of the Griots(Bards) of the Songhai and Mali empires, respectively.
Like the imperial cultures which spawned them they are very similar but also very distinct.
Ali sought to bridge that divide, and other, with his album "In The Heart of The Moon".
I've just heard this stuff...CBC did an interview with the guy who recorded the CD. WOW! I didn't know he played in Toronto! I wish I heard the concert.
