The Feeling band copied the piano solo in Coldplay's High Speed for their song Sewn. And I heard the album IF I Could Fly is on, and it is awful. Joe Satriani has a big EGO and is just showing off. He is no different to an MC/rapper but a guitar version.
I believe that the similarities between the 2 songs are about 2/3 or 66.6%. The vocals are different and coldplay uses some different instruments but the base song is just a copy of If I Could Fly by Joe Satriani. Personally I think Satriani's song is much better than viva la vida but you can decide for yourself.

Coincidence or not, doesn't matter... Whoever had the recognizable melody copywritten 1st holds ownership of the piece... Otherwise there is no point in copywriting your stuff if the other party can claim coincidence and be done with it.

As Solomon once said, "there's nothing new under the sun." Every song written can be seen as essentially old ideas hopefully freshened up. The beat is standard, as is the tempo. The melodies are similar, and quite close, but not precisely identical. If a bloke hears a lot of music, it's likely what he hears will manifest in his writing. "Stealing" needn't occur; inadvertent borrowing happens, as with George Harrison and "My Sweet Lord." I think Cold Play could afford to be generous

Honestly, the 'If I Could Fly' part at the beginning reminds me more of Losing My Religion by REM. I do hear similarities between the two, but there are so many songs these days, you can't honestly come up with anything original these days... Lets just get over it and enjoy music.

Coincidence or not, doesn't matter... Whoever had the recognizable melody copywritten 1st holds ownership of the piece... Otherwise there is no point in copywriting your stuff if the other party can claim coincidence and be done with it.
He sued because certain "recognizable" parts of the song was copywritten... I doubt very seriously if the intro or rhythm was what he was pissed about...
They probably offered Joe a royalty on the song as a settlement... That's what artists who do remakes do.

Every time a song is brilliant and becomes wildly popular there are always people who try to make money off of it. Same with books, movies, band names... anything people have had an idea about that was similar, they think just because the have ideas that compare to each other they get to have sole rights to it. It's ridiculous. Whether you like Coldplay or not, they are not the sorts to steal songs. They're way too intelligent and artistic for that.
