Hi jokanyan. Thanks for posting this. It was actually filmed 2 days before Marc died though. It was transmitted the following week. Muriel Young ran out of time and that's why they had to cut it short because the camera men wouldn't stay to finish it! So sad that the one opportunity to have these two great artists perform together was cut short because they ran out of studio time. Marc's star will always shine though - he was always under-rated and never got the recognition he deserved.
David Bowie got a reputation as a bit of a jinx in 1977 he did this recording with Marc Bolan and Marc died shortly after, he then recorded a duet with Bing crosby "the little drummer boy" in September 1977, Bing Crosby then died in October 1977
Dying only a week or so after the taping of this film for marcs last show, it is a wonderful tribute to the magic marc possessed, and a tragedy that in the middle of what was sure to be a a comeback of "bolanesque" proportions he was taken from the world. But at least he was able to say good-bye to his friends and end on the way up instead of on the down. Ride a white swan. RIP
You know, I just got done reading Marc's bio today. It's kinda funny how they counted off the song and it went into something that sounded like "Lady Madonna" and Marc tripped over into his microphone and out of anykind of live exposure forever...a sad moment yet funny ass hell. With Marc looking down on us all watching this, he's laughing with us. Coming up on his 32nd anniversary of him being gone, he would love to watch this with us all and have a good laugh.
David Bowie is known to be 5'8", and it's obvious here that Marc was standing next to him. They both are extremely thin as well. It's too bad they never did an album together. I'm just glad that on Marc's last time before the camera he was laughing and having fun, which is certainly the way he would want to be remembered.
I once stood abuot 6 feet from Bowie, and I can't imagine he was 5'8". He was so much shorter than I imagined him to be, which is not suprirsing due to his thin build. I'd say he was closer to 5'6, if that.
Anyway, he's the thin white duke and I admire him and Marc very much.
BTW Bowie gave my sister and I free tickets for that concert where I saw him in the late 70s, he found out we were related to Marc and sent us the tickets!
I had no idea that Marc was 5'2" he's the same height as me! I know Bowie wrote "Black Country Rock" in decication to Marc according to the Sound and Vision record.
I bet singers in 1977 were down on their knees praying that Bowie would not want to sing on TV with them. First Bolan died after appearing on TV with Bowie then a month later Bing Crosby died after recording peace on earth/little drummer boy for his christmas show.
does anyone know if it´s just an intro to a song and bowie just stop because marc falls down from stage? and where I could possibly find the intire song. and the intire show? hope that someone can help (: regards thomas
The song was called Standing Next To you. The show was recorded on September 9th 1977, Bolan was killed on September 16th with his death certificate stating cause of death as shock from multiple injuries and haemorrage, the show aired on tv on September 28th. Sadly the song was never completed as Bolan fell off the stage because it was too small and at the time strict union rules stated that filming had to finish exactly on time so the song was never finished so a golden opportunity was lost.
thanks man, i've trying to find out more about this song (standing next to you) for a while now... there's a 5 min recording of Bolan and Bowie working on it.. If you type the song in on youtube you'll find it...
According to Tony Visconti, in his autobiography, the unions which represented the film crew wouldn't allow a retake (for some reason or another, probably to do with overtime payments etc) and so the version we see was the only one filmed. Obviously, the show wasn't going out live.
This is one of the great enigma's of my life, seeing this when it was first shown. The programme ended right there, with Bolan apparently falling over. Eh?
Perhaps the poor boy suffered at the hands of Cocaine more than history records? Bless. x
The last episode featured Bolan duetting with his friend David Bowie. Before the song had reached its end, Bolan tripped over a microphone cable and fell off the stage. Bowie is said to have called out "Could we have a wooden box for Marc [to stand on]?".
There's something somewhat nice about this clip. Even if this was the last thing we saw before his death, it seems light hearted enough to remain a good last memory.
As a kid i watched this series with unease. it was terribly weird, as if Marc was already dead ! I never understood what it was about and felt there was an inate sadness in marc's eyes. i love these emos though particularly madmen ! RIP Marc !
I still don't get why it was alternatively called SLEEPING next to you if it was sung by two straight men. They should have finished the song even if Marc fell.
Thanks ever so much for posting this video. I have only seen it twice. Just now and when it was broadcast. Marc was a good show that started of a bit rocky but was doing ok then of course he was tragically killed in a motor accident.
I will never forget Marc and T Rex. To me they hold allot of golden memories from a golden age.
They both laughed. Bolan can be seen laughing at himself. Friends...laughing at a funny mishap...and then he died a few days later. So, laugh when you can, with your friends because that may be your last one. Bless Mr. Marc.
thinking about it - this was a forerunner for the tube and other such anarchic, improvised shows in england...
it was short-lived 'cos marc died after the pilot series.
but what a coup - getting bowie (then living in berlin and very much a recluse) to appear. david did it to help rescue the show from the bad ratings - and it worked.
but bolan was sadly finished. good memories though. and good that rolan has finally got his inheritance.
It's a trend in Holland to 'make a duet' with a popsinger who is already death. They simply mix the voices. Maby it's possible to make this duet again? (see Jan Smit and John Denver song they made, or Elvis Presley and his girl)
Great stuff! Old rivals obviously having a great time! two of my favourites, for certain. While Bowie rates a little higher, Marc will always have a special place in my heart! Sad, it's been 30 years since Bolan's untimely death.
That was beautiful, I didn't know they ever actually got to perform together, as Bolan was rapped in Bowie, and I've never seen David look so nice and happy before, as a matter of interest, Bowie was going to record a song with Bolan but very sadly he had been killed in the car accident just before it happened. I don't even think marc had the chance to find out about this recording!?
There was rivalry from Marc's side of their friendship when David became famous with the Ziggy Stardust persona. But by the time of this great 1977 performance, Marc was no longer competition for Bowie and Marc knew it.
I think it's great seeing David and Marc jamming together on Marc's tv show. Just two great friends who knew each other before they were famous, and happened to be geniuses.
Glad to finally see this after all the rumors--that Marc was fat and Bowie sneered as Marc fell head-first off the stage. Marc wasn't fat at all, Bowie is just sharing a laugh with a friend who slipped a little. No more, no less.

Shit, did he die? What was it a concussion? after he fell off the stage. How high was that stage then? It must have been metres! and bloody Bowie is LAUGHING!! That bastard ! Was he glad maybe to see Marc go because then he wouldn't have any more competition and he could become successful with Ziggy.
David Bowie wasn't laughing at Marc Bolan. Bowie has always spoken very highly of Bolan both as a musician and personality. If Bowie was so evil he wouldn't have set up a trust fund for Bolan's son Rolan, none of Bolan's other friends like Ringo Starr, Elton John or Rod Stewart did that for his son.
It's great seeing the Bowie and Bolan could by 1977, just be two great friends who could jam together on a televison show and forget about competion.
Don't you feel like you knew him? He had such warmth and charm as a performer and in interviews. Whenever I see footage of him I feel this deep saddness, like I lost one of my closest friends. I miss him so much. I think about Gloria alot, hoping she found some peace around what I can't imagine. A staggering loss. He was larger than life (even though he was only 5'2" tall) and having him suddenly vanish, it is unimaginable to me. Bless your heart Gloria.
Bless her heart? She killed him! Then flew to America before she could be prosecuted.
For her to profit off of his death is sickening.
She brought him nothing but horrible back-up singing, and a low point in his career. That being said, she must have been in horrible emotional pain, for that I give her sympathy. She was drunk when she slammed into that tree..she knows
and has to live with killing a legend.Put her in jail where all the other drunk drivers who kill are
To Miss Planetqueen,.You can find that everything I said is true .Gloria Jones suffered a broken jaw along with other minor wounds, she quickly flew to America. police were seeking to press charges against her.I believe that Marc's brother's website is where I obtained most of the information, along with a clipping from a magazine that I saved after he was killed.I'm sorry for being so "strong" in my comments and certianly did not want to offend anyone. I just miss Marc, like we all do.

Yes, I am sure she often wonders how far she could have went, had he not died. I know that sound cruel, and I know she din not intend to kill him, but she did not seem to know how bad she was.
Marc wasn't 5 foot 2!! How can you be such a "fan" and get that wrong. He is officially listed at time of death at 5'7" a perfectly normal, average height, 5'2" is tiny!!! Steve Marriot from the Small Faces was only 5'5" but 5'2"!!!!?? haha.
Bolan and Bowie weren`t rivals at all, they were very old friends from mid 60s and shared big part of audience too (before Bowie get much more mature soon). Bolan and Slade were in the "war", their fans hated each other.
In 1977 Bowie was a huge star but Bolan`s heydays were far gone.
The name of the song varies from whichever bootleg tape it appears on.From the original demos taped at Marc's hotel room it's known as "Sleeping Next To You",but it's also been called "Standing Next To You" too.
The bootleg also features another Bolan/Bowie penned song called "Madman" that was covered posthumously by The Cuddly Toys.
Yes, sad, they had plans to record together...I think you can see a longer version that extends a few more secs after if you watch the YouTube someone posted of David's performance on that show of "Heroes".....
I agree. If you listen carefully you can hear the perfect blend between a chooglin' Bolan song and Bowie's at-the-time-current Low/'Heroes' sound. Would love to hear where it was going to end up!
wats the song their playing please help

How do you know all this intimate information? Where you there? Do you personally know all you claim?
marcsplanetqueen 4 years ago
To Miss Planetqueen,.You can find that everything I said is true .Gloria Jones suffered a broken jaw along with other minor wounds, she quickly flew to America. police were seeking to press charges against her.I believe that Marc's brother's website is where I obtained most of the information, along with a clipping from a magazine that I saved after he was killed.I'm sorry for being so "strong" in my comments and certianly did not want to offend anyone. I just miss Marc, like we all do.

Hi Shelby. Others might say your comments are a bit 'strong' but I agree with you but she has to live with herself.

The pain of living is greater than death for Gloria knowing everyday she killed one of the greatest musicians/performers of all time.

Yes, I am sure she often wonders how far she could have went, had he not died. I know that sound cruel, and I know she din not intend to kill him, but she did not seem to know how bad she was.

So why are you even here watching this if you don't care? Do you just get off on being a twat?
chachadynamite 3 years ago 4

MargusKiistheCritic 5 years ago
Oh wow, now I love Slade but they don't hold a candle to Bolan.

hey what is the name of that song anyway?
kcrypt 5 years ago
The name of the song varies from whichever bootleg tape it appears on.From the original demos taped at Marc's hotel room it's known as "Sleeping Next To You",but it's also been called "Standing Next To You" too.
The bootleg also features another Bolan/Bowie penned song called "Madman" that was covered posthumously by The Cuddly Toys.

bolan was really looking fantastic wasnt he? so sad, this was just a few days before he was killed, too. that song was smokin.

How was it that Marc Bolan was so hot? Good question!
Don't make 'em like that anymore. Love his attitude.
afghanhound 5 years ago
That´s pretty funny. It´s pretty great to see these guys together, knowing they were rivals at a time.
And seemed to be funny for them as well.
Sad that bolan died soon after..
Sandost 5 years ago
Yes, sad, they had plans to record together...I think you can see a longer version that extends a few more secs after if you watch the YouTube someone posted of David's performance on that show of "Heroes".....
afghanhound 5 years ago
aww, man. and that song was off to such a great start. Before Bolan fell off the stage
ElectricLadyLand 5 years ago
I agree. If you listen carefully you can hear the perfect blend between a chooglin' Bolan song and Bowie's at-the-time-current Low/'Heroes' sound. Would love to hear where it was going to end up!
